At this point we need FLASH support and the ability to play WMV video from websites.

As for people hating on Flash.... why?

If someone builds a site solely in Flash and you don't even notice, then that person did their job the right way. If you get frustrated by navigating a site or it has long pauses for load time, then the Flash work was crap.

I wish that web page development was a hybrid of Flash and HTML, but in an intensive graphical way. Creating a web page should in no way involve writing code that can muck up if you forget one little closure mark. It should be like laying out a page in Illustrator with Photoshop and Flash capabilities.

The first thing I found is that in 1.1.3, if you click on one of your webclip icons and go to the page, then go to a few other sites on extra tabs, go back to the home screen and elect the first site again, it would load in another new tab.
With 1.1.4, if the site is already open in a tab, that tab is selected rather than make a new one.

The 2nd new feature I found is that now if in the preffs you have double tap the iphone button to go to ipod controlls on, when the phone screen goes to sleep and then wakes to have the slide to unlock screen, you can now double tap the button to display ipod controls while the phone is locked. Very cool when i have the phone in my pocket on teh way to work and i just want to skip a song, i dont need to unlock now.

The only other thing I’ve noticed so far that in the mail preffs we now get exchange, although its just IMAP exchange support, so not sure why this is better than normal IMAP.

Am I the only one getting a headache from reading all of these WMV & FLASH trolls rant on and on and on???

The iPhone was designed with a dedicated chip for H.264, NOT WMV or FLASH!
And Microsoft doesn't even support WMV for Macs anymore, so hell will freeze over before that happens!
DUH!

If it had separate chips to play everything and DVDs too, you'd be making a phone call on your LAPTOP! DUH!

If you want something else buy it, but stop whining and trolling here!

A FLASH expert already posted here that FLASH would run the battery down ridiculously quick. Steve Jobs said the same thing about 3G.

These things will never be perfectly solved until chipsets for these things are low-power, small size such that a combo chip does all in 1 or 2 low-power chips and this will be in the NEXT iPHONE, NOT THE ONE YOU BOUGHT!
DUH!

Otherwise, forget FLASH working as well as H.264 on the iPhone even if it is eventually added (I wouldn't mind if it was, but I'm not whining about it).
And even then, it will be AFTER the SDK is released,
NOT BEFORE! DUH!

Period. End of story.

Are ya happy? Did I miss anything? Too many DUHs for ya'll? :)

This alone makes the upgrade worth it for me! :D

thats not new

no, just no

if you didn't have any type of flash plug in on your computer that .flv couldn't play

you can't just throw a .flv on an iphone and expect it to play cause apple wants to.

it's like opening a psd without photoshop.

Well, for one, you can open Photoshop documents without Photoshop. Sorry to turn your world upside down. Preview can open them.

The FLV format is based on H.263, and can be viewed with FFMPEG, and players that use FFMPEG like VLC and MPlayer.

Typically I don't install updates if there is no indication of what it fixes or adds. It sounds like Apple provided no release notes with the new firmware?

That works that way with 1.1.3 also.

i think both those were available before the 1.1.4 update (the ipod one for sure was available)

IAMP exchange support has always been there from day one.

The page requires flash from a browser with a desktop ID string. Since the pics do show on the iPhone once in a blue-fricken' moon, it's not flash on the iPhone version of the page. However, I agree with everything else you said. What really kills me, is that Verizon is now blocking these emails, since the pics are sent as an attachment vs. an inline image. I now can't send pics to my wife at all from my phone; really nice when I'm out doing something fun with the kids and want to show her. Aggravating as hell..
EXACTLY. Why even have texting then, we should all be just emailing one another. It's just a dumb politically based moved, that's it.

I just updated to 1.1.4 from a vanilla 1.1.3. My first impression was the snappier speeds of all of the apps. Take YouTube.app for instance, I could tap it, and it would take a good 5 seconds to load. Same thing went for Maps.app.

Secondly, the system feels a lot more stable. In 1.1.3, every day I would have Safari.app close out three or four times.

Thirdly, in Safari.app we obviously have tab browsing. But in previous firmware versions, all you would see was a white screen and the website labeled above it. In 1.1.4, every website is saved in tab view, even after shutting down and rebooting.

I think that 1.1.4 is going to be the SDK version (obviously) and Apple will push the limit and release some apps either later tonight or on Friday (February 29, 2008) to stay inside of there February deadline.:apple:

Show me a site where you don't NOTICE the flash - some sites use it in a thoughtful way - but i've yet to see a good site which is wholly flash. And even if its there you notice it. My pet hate at the moment is sites with flash parts with music or sounds hidden on them, and you have to hunt for the mute switch.

Having said that Flash is needed for the iPhone - if only to live up to the 'full internet in your pocket' claim, and hang the battery issues - everything uses battery.

I never saw anything but the white page with title.

Now its even loading when I change the page. So for me, nice addition.

after a while the tabs go back to the white screen:(:(
my heads buzzing with this lol
there must be something new and exciting

Reception improved

For weeks I have noticed poor reception in large buildings. Seemed to start when I updated to 1.1.3. Tried rebooting several different times to improve reception. Today the phone was in its cradle at work with 1 bar, I installed 1.1.4 and it went to full bars. Coincidence?

Reception appears improved for me as well. I'm inside the company right now, and it's full bars.

Well the update has so far b0rked my (completly virgin [i.e. never jailbroken etc]) iphone. Currently performing my 3rd attempt at a restore, only to be met with a very helpful box that says "error" about 10 mins into the restore process.

i just checked since i saw your post and i usually have no signal in my place at all, but now im hanging on to 2 bars minimum, hopefully this isnt just a fluke of where im sitting and i can actually call people from my couch and not have to stand in 1 spot next to the window

Why would a SOFTWARE update magically make the CAMERA (HARDWARE) more clear and sharper?

Let's use some common sense please.

1.1.4 is worth it just for the safari fixes. Saving the state the webpage is in.

As far as the Flash debate, I don't need it on the iphone. Look at the screen of the iphone, it's way too small to utilize flash.

I want fixes and APPLICATIONS. Give us the SDK so we can start working on our some great applications.

At work I usually have to leave my phone in a possible two spots and use a bluetooth headset. I now have a consistent 3 bars in my office and warehouse

I love how with each firmware release people claim that their iPhone "feels more stable."

"Safari used to crash on me twice a day, but it hasn't crashed on me yet!" ... neglecting to mention you've only played with it for all of 40 seconds.
