If Apple is anything like most software companies (mainly themselves in the past) odd numbers in the second period are minor updates, even numbers are major updates.
1.1.3 brought us Google Maps Location, Webclips, and Multiple-Contact SMS. Hardly what many would consider a minor update.

1.1.1 had a size of 150Mb
1.1.2 had a size of 158Mb
1.1.3 had a size of 162Mb
1.1.4 had a size of 165Mb
If that helps at all.

my interpretation of this is that it adds 3Mb of "new" stuff. everyone is saying its a hefty update - but no more so than the last one which added 4Mb and allowed for multiple home screens and shortcuts.

They like to brag they are providing the 'real' internet on the iphone, but they are not. When half the sites you visit either use flash or WMV media and you can't enjoy it on the iphone...that's not the real internet. Now I don't expect them to support just any technology that comes along...but hey...flash and WMV, not to mention non-streaming quicktime movies?

gruber had a post on this topic a few days ago...check it out on daringfireball.net

even though the download package was bigger than previous updates my free space remains that same as before the update...

Must be a UK only thing then. I've always had the Carrier option since I purchased my phone on UK iDay Nov 9th..

You can now sync iPhoto Events to your iPhone.

Woo hoo! I have seriously been waiting for that... because it really defeated the purpose of Events since you had to create albums anyway if you wanted to split your pictures up on your iPhone...

Hell yeah! I've been wanting that forever!

Starbucks will never be the same...

with AT&T developing more WiFi "Hotspots" at their locations, and this "coordinated training" will require all their employees to become more computer friendly while taking those orders via the iPhone. It's been leaked here in the San Francisco Bay Area (at least 700 stores will close for about 3 hours beginning at 5:30pm) that this is just a massive retraining, but with the introduction of iPhone orders the will definitely require some sort of "computer savvy" employees.

How many people here lusting after the iPhone SDK are actual developers?

I really wanna know, cause it seems kind of silly to me for lay people to want something that they can't do anything with anyway.

Something tells me you do not use/own an iPhone.

While it has been a fun 8 months, the untapped potential is brutal - especially with the temptation(s) a jailbroken iPhone presents.

I would guess, much like me, other lay persons are interested in the release of an SDK as it signals a major step towards apps on our iPhones.
Plus, I suspect (hope) apps will be made immediately available at the time of the announcement.

I hate that bug!!!

I logged a bug that I'm hoping was fixed. If your country participates in Daylight Savings Time, clear our all calendar events on March 9th and 10th. Then create a new all-day event on the 9th. In month view, it looks like something is taking place on the 10th as well.

I noticed that too. I will have to give it a try. I changed "all day" to 1200AM to 1200PM and it fixed it for now. Hope this update is a fix.:apple:

Good Design is about Good Compromise

So CNN & USAToday don't count? WMV. I'm not saying I like it. I'm not saying it's better than H.264 cuz it ain't. I'm just saying, in terms of saturation out there...I would say they are standards. Not open standards...but standards nonetheless.

Believe me, if Apple could have made the iPhone do EVERYTHING you wanted, without increasing cost dramatically, or decreasing battery life dramatically, or increasing complexity dramatically, they would have done it.

As Steve Jobs said, this decision is about Battery Life. Decoding video is extremely processor intensive, which hurts battery life dramatically. Apple probably added a hardware module to decode H.264, which could do the decoding without dropping the battery life as much, since it is optimized for thi purpose. If this is what they did, to achieve similar efficiency for WMV or Flash, they would have to add hardware modules for those formats too. And then you will be complaining that iPhones are too expensive at $600. If the iPhone does not serve your need, why dont you just buy another phone?

Apple has made the right choice here, going with the open Industry Standard of H.264, and if they can support Flash for cheap (in terms of money, and computing resources), they will do that too, but dont expect that anytime soon.

The "American" iPhone will show you the carrier options as well if you travel to Europe. It gives you options when you travel abroad. This is not new. I've seen it this past November.
