Wow, I really had to look really hard to even see that. The fact that you know it's there is the only reason why you are obsessing about it. I know how you feel but sooner or later, it'll go away since you won't be focusing on that area when you use it.

I have a day or two before Apple will contact me about it being picked up, I'll try and ignore it and see how I get on. Tonight though it has been catching my eye a lot, maybe it'll stop doing that once the initial "I found a defect" 'buzz' has worn off.

If it's a speck of dust, you might be able to knock out into the area on the edge of the screen where you won't see it with a few well placed light taps to the screen, or to the edge of the iPad. Just be sure to angle the iPad the correct way so the speck can "fall" into the right spot. I've dislodged dust on various gadget screens more than a few times this way.

It looks like 2 dead pixels in the second one. Even from normal distance I keep seeing it, really hard to ignore on apps like Instapaper. Just sticks out as a small black dot.

My $15,000 car had a scratch on the tire...should I return it? $500 isnt that much.

No you shouldn't, much like you shouldn't return an iPad that has a scratch inside the dock connector port, but in the same way you should complain if your car came with a scratch on the windscreen or paintwork, you should return an iPad with a faulty screen.

Also, saying $500 isn't much because your car costs $15,000 is stupid, in the same way that saying '$15,000 isn't much because a private island costs over $100,000,000' would be stupid.

If you purchase something, regardless of the cost, it should live up to the standards expected and advertised when you purchased it. Why should some people live with a dead pixel, or a scratch on the aluminium, when other people who paid the same price for the same thing from the same place get a perfect product?

This may sound crazy, but have you tried shaking it to see if it will move off to the side? Assuming this is dust or such behind the glass.

Edit: I see mcdj already suggested this. :)

Maybe people are just thinking it's a piece of dust or hair, and not the defect I'm speaking of? I could understand that.

When I turn off the screen and looked at the spot with a torch it just looks like a white dot, then when you turn it on it looks like a tiny spec of hair or a scratch. It's not that my shiny new toy has a nick, it already has one on the casing that I just ignore, but this is catching my eye constantly on bright backgrounds now.

I don't know what it is. But what I'm saying is that at least from what I can tell from that picture, but it really is so small you can barely see it. I couldn't find it at all without being told where it was and I still had to enlarge the picture to see it.

It's probably catching your eye cause you know it's there and the fact that it is there is bugging you so it stands out. I'm telling you if you try to not pay attention to it and just enjoy the ipad and not worry about it you'll probably stop noticing it.

It's really insane how much some people nitpick.

Some people would return it for having a scratch on the bezel, I didn't. A black spot is showing up when I'm reading articles, it's super obvious on a white background. At least to me it is.

...or, you could just stop posting and return the thing already. So many threads seeking affirmation on an action the posters have decided to do anyway... What's the point? Just return the ****ing thing!

I'm definitely with you on this. I'm also picky, but for $500+ feel I have every right to a perfect product. I'd for sure exchange it, especially as you're in the 14 day window still.

For the other poster, don't worry about Apple's bottom line with returns. They have so much excess cash (billions), they reluctantly decided to start paying their shareholders dividends for the first time.

Where exactly is this on your iPad because it seems that I have something similar. Except mine might be a little bit wider, maybe twice/thrice as long?

Same story here though, I only noticed it because I was putting on the screen protector and wiped the screen clean to see if any dust got under the screen protector, and then I noticed that small line of pixels.

At first I thought it was a scratch on the screen protector, so I inspected it, and that wasn't it. I pulled it off to see if maybe it was a piece of dust, and it definitely wasn't. Strange thing is that it's definitely noticeable now when I'm browsing the web or using any apps with a bright background, I never noticed that before and I inspected the screen when I first got it. So it must've happened on it's own (??). I really don't know.

Anyways, it's not dead pixels because they change colors depending on my viewing angle. And out of curiosity, I put that line against a horizontal line on the engadget app when you have the list of stories, and if I change my viewing angle, the line moves away from the engadget app line. It's so strange.

Mine is on the lower right corner if you're viewing your iPad in portrait mode, with the Home button towards the bottom.

Mine is at the top right corner with the home button at the bottom. I don't think it's dead pixels that I have, it seems to be dust. When the screen is off it appears as a small white dot, I guess it's the shadow you can see when the screen is on.

If it was in the very corner I'd probably keep it, but when in landscape mode it's in an even more annoying position and jumps out at me.

Same here, I don't mind some slight imperfections but if there's something catching my eye on the screen then that's pretty bad for a product that is all about the screen. Just knowing it's there bugs me and seeing it makes it worse. It's a much darker dot than the picture makes out, it really shows up.

I agree, take it back and get a new one. You can't post here without getting some crap from someone about anything. If you say the sky is blue, I am sure you will have someone with a tritanopia color vision defect will fight with you that it isnt. Return that iPad and get ya a new one.

Agreed. It's very annoying to look at now, and I can't seem to ignore it anymore. I'm going to visit the Apple Store this weekend when I have time and see what they say. I felt like returning it, but it seemed like a huge hassle and don't have the time to package it and whatnot at the moment.

Mine isn't a white dot when I turn off the screen btw. Mine appears like a real screen defect, though a minor one compared to other unlucky folks that I've seen in these forums. :p

I just noticed this little mark on my screen, it wasn't there before so I have no idea what it is. It has been taken care of well and today it was in a Maroo case so I don't think I have scratched it. It's really noticeable on web pages and anything else with a bright background. My iPad also had a scratch on the silver border/bezel which was minor and I opted to ignore, any problems with the screen are a nono though...

I don't like to think I'm too picky but this has definitely gotta go back, kinda annoying because everything else is perfect. (aside from the bezel scratch)

Can't see anything, screen is too yellow.

Ah awesome, another "im returning my ipad because of a minute imperfection".

I can see Apple going out of business if this continues.

Really you must be new what release doesn't have the same exact stories. It gets old.

Apple set our expectations high they will not go out of business, some will return 10 times others will live with problems, the reality is if you are unhappy return it, who cares what anyone on macrumors or anyone else thinks.

My MacBook Air has an uneven lid, one side more elevated than the other, I didn't try to return it. This, while minor, is just irritating me, I can ignore it on a lot of apps that are darker, but I read a lot, either on white or sepia backgrounds and it's very noticeable on those. It's going back, I'd rather have extra backlight bleed over something I can see in 'normal' usage. :)

So while minor niggles, such as the uneven lid on my MBA and the scratch on this iPad at the bottom, can be easily ignored, something affecting the screen is quite different.

Apple is obviously proud of the "Resolutionary" screen on the iPad, so if there is something distracting from it, like the OP's picture CLEARLY shows, by all means, swap it out. I enjoy Apple's mobile devices immensely, but I would not feel guilty about exchanging them for what makes me the happiest. I'm sure Apple will find a way to survive. Arguing over how picky the OP is will not stop him/her from being distracted by the imperfection.

I can't even see it. If I were you, I won't bother returning the iPad for such a small thing.

For giving a damn

I've lurked here for years without registering. Seeing your comment and others, connected with me enough to prompt me to finally register just to respond to this and make my first post here.

I paid close to $1000 for my New iPad, for one feature and one feature only. "The best mobile display that has ever shipped. That's the first feature." One that touts I will not even see a pixel. Never mind that this mark looks bigger than a pixel. If Apple is marketing this device as so sharp pixels disappear, they obviously feel some people can see a mark as small as a pixel. That it's noticeable, and it matters.

That mark may not be noticeable to you, but it doesn't mean it's not noticeable to others. It is definitely noticeable to me. While watching movies, my eyes will constantly catch that mark, bringing me outside an immersive experience. Same with reading. Every time I read a line that passes that area, I'll have a mental pause thinking about it.

To suggest that one of the most profitable company in history (CNN Money) is going to go out of business because of people returning their products is so incredibly ridiculous. Did you even think about this before you posted it?

Ah awesome, another "im returning my ipad because of a minute imperfection".

I can see Apple going out of business if this continues.

Also as the OP says, it happened after some time without fault to him. If this occurs on it's own, then perhaps this panel has more issues to come. Why risk it?

Now in the bigger picture of life as a whole, no. This isn't a big deal. We also want to remember that, there are people who make these things for us. People aren't perfect, thus this device isn't. Mistakes happen. But if a mistake happens that apple can easily fix like this one; Why not exchange it for one he is completely satisfied with? This gives Apple another chance to display what I consider is their best qualities. Their level of service to us, and attention to detail. I've referred many people from PCs to Macs because of this. I'm certain I'm not the only one.

OP didn't just post this to vent or complain, he posted it to document it. To see if others may have the same issue. To give voice and understanding to what he and others could see as an issue.

As Steve Jobs would say,

Is this good enough? Is this right?

When Jonny Ive spoke about Steve he said this. He also said:

He used to joke that the lunatics had taken over the asylum, as we shared a giddy excitement spending months and months working on a part of a product that nobody would ever see. Not with their eyes. We did it because we really believed it was right because we cared. He believed that there was a gravity, almost a sense of civic responsibility, to care way beyond any sort of functional imperative.

And I care enough to register, and post. I also feel having a mark on his screen matters. It also matters to the OP. For having a higher standard regarding attention to detail than you may.. Go ahead, call us lunatics.

Here's to (as Steve would say), "for giving a damn"
