Maybe next time apply a screen protector immediately after removing the plastic?

There. Problem solved.

You seriously have OCD issues. Do you like put your iPad under a microscope and examine the hell out of it?

No, I don't. As I said, I did not return it for a minor scratch on the bezel, but this mark on the screen is very noticeable even when holding the device at an arm's length.

If I had OCD would I have kept it despite it having a scratch out of the box? Nope. I wouldn't keep my MacBook Air with its uneven lid either. Yet it's still here, and so was my iPad until it got this piece of dust under the screen.

I mean really, I've had products much cheaper than this come with no defects, why would I settle for less now?

Not sure how a screen protector is going to help against something underneath the glass.

My $15,000 car had a scratch on the tire...should I return it? $500 isnt that much.

If you had to look at your scratched tire continuously in order to functionally operate your $15,000 car, I'd say yes.

I think if the OP doesn't like it, then he is within his rights to return it. It is Apple's policy that provides the 14 day return window, so he isn't doing anything wrong.

Holy **** man, did every ******* on macrumors happen upon this one thread?

Yggbert, I see it and yes it'd annoy me too. Go and return it.

Not sure how you can tell it's underneath the glass. It's probably on top of the glass and your case (or yourself) may have accidentally scratched it a week after unboxing.

Nice try and good luck fooling Apple.

Take it in and have them look at it. I wouldn't put up with that either and I noticed it right away. Don't listen to the children here. They get very upset when someone has higher standards. ;)

Oh yeah I'm definitely returning it, I was just curious if this thing was happening to anybody else's. I don't mind a bit of backlight bleed or a scratch on the casing/bezel but this is just catching my eye now. I know it's not my fault because it has just been in a case today, nobody else has used it and I didn't put anything on top of the screen at any point.

I'm anal with things like this - people don't care about dead pixels or anything but they drive me nuts. I expect perfection in what I buy, regardless of whether it's £500 or £5000.. I took my iPad 2 back twice cos I wasn't happy then returned it full stop cos every one had 1-5 dead pixels and marks on the aluminium. It happens as part of mass manufacturing but my iPad 3 is absolutely perfect - no bleed, no marks, no dodgy screen issues.

If I were you I'd return it too - best of luck with your new one (y)

You cretin lol. It's not on top of the glass at all - I can tell that from the pics he took. If he isn't happy he can return it - consumers prerogative.. Just because you'd live with it, doesn't mean someone else will.

I'd return it.

I've lurked here for years without registering. Seeing your comment and others, connected with me enough to prompt me to finally register just to respond to this and make my first post here.

I paid close to $1000 for my New iPad, for one feature and one feature only. "The best mobile display that has ever shipped. That's the first feature." One that touts I will not even see a pixel. Never mind that this mark looks bigger than a pixel. If Apple is marketing this device as so sharp pixels disappear, they obviously feel some people can see a mark as small as a pixel. That it's noticeable, and it matters.

That mark may not be noticeable to you, but it doesn't mean it's not noticeable to others. It is definitely noticeable to me. While watching movies, my eyes will constantly catch that mark, bringing me outside an immersive experience. Same with reading. Every time I read a line that passes that area, I'll have a mental pause thinking about it.

To suggest that one of the most profitable company in history (CNN Money) is going to go out of business because of people returning their products is so incredibly ridiculous. Did you even think about this before you posted it?

Also as the OP says, it happened after some time without fault to him. If this occurs on it's own, then perhaps this panel has more issues to come. Why risk it?

Now in the bigger picture of life as a whole, no. This isn't a big deal. We also want to remember that, there are people who make these things for us. People aren't perfect, thus this device isn't. Mistakes happen. But if a mistake happens that apple can easily fix like this one; Why not exchange it for one he is completely satisfied with? This gives Apple another chance to display what I consider is their best qualities. Their level of service to us, and attention to detail. I've referred many people from PCs to Macs because of this. I'm certain I'm not the only one.

OP didn't just post this to vent or complain, he posted it to document it. To see if others may have the same issue. To give voice and understanding to what he and others could see as an issue.

As Steve Jobs would say,

Is this good enough? Is this right?

When Jonny Ive spoke about Steve he said this. He also said:

He used to joke that the lunatics had taken over the asylum, as we shared a giddy excitement spending months and months working on a part of a product that nobody would ever see. Not with their eyes. We did it because we really believed it was right because we cared. He believed that there was a gravity, almost a sense of civic responsibility, to care way beyond any sort of functional imperative.

And I care enough to register, and post. I also feel having a mark on his screen matters. It also matters to the OP. For having a higher standard regarding attention to detail than you may.. Go ahead, call us lunatics.

Here's to (as Steve would say), "for giving a damn"

Amen!

There is always a hot discussion about whether to keep an item or return it. Post above explains everything.

I have never had an apple product come with a scratch out of the box.. And if yours did then you had to be looking for it the very second it came out of its box. If you discovered it a few days later then it's very possible you or your case caused it, not Apple.

Edit: and for your speck of dust on the screen, I recommend a microfiber cloth!

I have never had a new apple product come with a scratch on it out of the box... That is until I received my new iPad. Mine has a nick in the same spot as the OP's. I know that it was caused during manufacturing because it's right above the dock connector and I saw it when I plugged it into the charger right out of the box. I too opted to keep mine since everything else was perfect. You shouldn't assume that just because something has never happened to you that either the OP caused it or he was combing over his new purchase with a magnifying glass.

Ah awesome, another "im returning my ipad because of a minute imperfection".

I can see Apple going out of business if this continues.

Also as the OP says, it happened after some time without fault to him. If this occurs on it's own, then perhaps this panel has more issues to come. Why risk it?

Look forward to more posts from you, sir

Just return it. It's completely unacceptable since you are paying premium price for a product which is touted the best in the market. If others can get a flawless one, so should you. Just ignore those fanboys who continuously 'diagnosed' others with OCD. Maybe we should diagnose them with OCD in return for their persistence in defending the obvious flaw.

What are we suppose to be looking at?

We are supposed to be looking user damages that somehow need to be Apple's fault!:p

Hard to believe it came out of the box like this if the damage is NOW so horrendous that the OP can't stand it! I would think it would have been notices right off the bat!

Oh well. This is why Apple charges so much

Some people would return it for having a scratch on the bezel, I didn't. A black spot is showing up when I'm reading articles, it's super obvious on a white background. At least to me it is.

Fair enough, but it semis like there are more threads here complaining about the new iPad than anything else.

 I don't understand why people are so anal about such tiny scratches when it doesn't stop the device from performing in the slightest.

Scratched iPad you got there?

Do we know it's not something that got under the glass?

Too far from a store, and no not really. I don't look for these things, I noticed it though because it wasn't there before, and as I said, I did not return it for the scratch it came with out of the box. I'm hardly being unreasonable or nitpicky here...

Seriously, can you see yourself doing the same for your Samsung, your Sony or any other device? Why is it only Apple who get treated this way? You must have pulled you the magnifying glass to have seen that. It's like you are looking for problems and of course you end up finding them.

Seriously, let's ask if he used a magnifying glass.

DID YOU USE A MAGNIFYING GLASS?

I'm definitely with you on this. I'm also picky, but for $500+ feel I have every right to a perfect product. I'd for sure exchange it, especially as you're in the 14 day window still.

For the other poster, don't worry about Apple's bottom line with returns. They have so much excess cash (billions), they reluctantly decided to start paying their shareholders dividends for the first time.

Its a $500 tablet for Christ's sake. Buy a $500 from another manufacturer and see how much sympathy they show you something as trivial as that. Some people are never happy. OCD is real problem you have.

Oh yeah and so Apple have a bit of cash in the bank so that makes them fair game? You're not that different from that woman suing for walking into a glass door.

I think I'm getting dumber reading some of these posts. This can't be good for me.:D

If it's on the screen and bothers me then yeah I'm irritated by it, as I said I opted to not return it for the bezel scratch it already came with. I don't think I'm being unreasonable.

Edit: Wow people voting me down because I don't like the fact my new $500+ device just developed an issue with the screen, a rather important feature of the iPad. Ridiculous.

No, people are voting you down because this thread is pointless..

Really you must be new what release doesn't have the same exact stories. It gets old.

Apple set our expectations high they will not go out of business, some will return 10 times others will live with problems, the reality is if you are unhappy return it, who cares what anyone on macrumors or anyone else thinks.

Well with your logic, why even ask this question on the forum?
