Soo, very tempted to download this update, but...

I have UNO running. Do i have to restore to Aqua to install the update? And does UNO work on 10.4.11?

UNO works for me.... But DVD player won't read anything now! I've tried it with multiple discs (DVD SP burned discs, purchased Hollywood DVDs, etc) and all I get is "Supported Disc Not Available". The disc doesn't show up as mounted in finder. Interestingly, I'm able to open discs in VLC.

Finder folder names bug fixed?

I just recently discovered a very stupid UI bug that has apparently existed in the Finder since 10.4.9, at least on some user's computers, mainly Intel machines. It seems to affect any new folders created on non-HFS+ volumes, including USB flash drives, USB/FireWire external drives, and Windows shares. What happens is that when you create at least two new folders (might need to be at the root of the drive), and then select any of the newly created folders besides the last one that was created, all the other folder names become the same as the last folder name that was created, and point to the same files (if you put anything in the last folder you'll see that all the other folders point to the same contents).

Moving to a different location in the Finder and returning will show a temporary flash of the accurate folder names but then they change back to the wrong/duplicate names. Relaunching the Finder and other actions have no effect, so I'm thinking the bug may actually be some background process the Finder uses to access mounted volumes. Nevertheless, the effect is visible in the Finder, and the _only_ solution I've found is to eject/unmount the volume and remount it. After that everything is fine until you start creating new folders in the root of that volume again. Subfolders of unaffected root folders don't seem to be affected. At least, these are my observations based on a lot of experimenting.

I have verified this bug exists on two brand new Intel iMacs, a 24" white previous generation iMac and a 20" aluminum iMac. Both were running 10.4.10. I wasn't able to replicate the bug on my iBook G4 running 10.4.10. There are no permission problems or anything like that. The bug only affects non-HFS+ formatted volumes.

I am hoping beyond hope that someone at Apple actually addressed this horrifically idiotic Finder bug. If this is the last system update they produce for Tiger and this bug isn't fixed, I am going to be apoplectic with rage, because as far as I'm concerned any Tiger machine affected by this bug is literally broken in a totally unacceptable way. I find it very difficult to believe that it has already taken Apple several months to address this issue. Having to disconnect from any Windows network share or Windows formatted external storage device after making more than one new folder or any subfolders within even a single new root folder? Not cool, Apple. Things like this make us all look like idiots for recommending Macs to other people. I don't like looking like an idiot.

Anyway, here's a link to the most informative discussion I found on this issue. You'll notice the original message is dated February, and the bug still hasn't been addressed:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5855415

Can someone out there who is running 10.4.9 and/or 10.4.10 on Intel or PPC please:
A) check to see if you have this bug*, and if you do,
B) do a good backup, then
C) apply the 10.4.11 update and
D) see if the bug is fixed, then
E) come back here and let us know:

1) the results,
2) what Mac model you have,
3) what system version you were updating from, and
4) whether you used the delta or combo updaters?

Also anyone who has the bug please reply to the thread I linked to above, I'll post it again here:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5855415

Thanks for your help. This is a very serious issue for some of us. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.

P.S. Right now there is one (1) new post on that thread saying that it may be fixed. Confirmations are very, very welcome. I don't know about the rest of you but the discovery of such an obvious (to the user) and long-lived bug has been very disturbing to me.

* Simple way to test:

- Access any non-HFS+ formatted drive or Samba share
- Go to the root of the volume (the highest folder)
- Make some new folders, like so:
--- test1
--- test2
--- test3
- Click on the other folders and see what happens. If the result looks like this:
--- test3
--- test3
--- test3
- Congrats, you have the bug. You will not be able to access "test1" and "test2" from the Finder until you eject and remount the volume. Terminal and everything else will show the correct information, however.

I just downloaded and installed 10.4.11 on my MacBook Pro. It asked me to reboot. Now I've been on the gray screen for about 20 minutes on the boot up process.

Getting worried...

Same problem here:( I tried resseting PRAM....booting in safe mode....nothing works:confused: I guess I'll just let it load for hours and hope.

again: DOES THIS UPDATE FIX THE AIRPORT DROPPING CONECTION PROBLEM ON MACBOOKS?

I don't want to jinx it - but I've been surfing now for about an hour on my 2.16GHz MacBook without a drop or wild variance in signal strength... which has NEVER happened since updating to 10.4.10

I loaded the combo-update

I'm inclined to think this may have fixed it.

Lucky you guys! Ever since I updated to 10.4.11, it has been nothing BUT problems with wireless. The signal is all over the place, and it's already blanked out 6 times in the past hour. Pretty frustrating. I didn't have any of these problems with any previous versions, aarrrgggg

Anyone else having a problem with the red 'close' button in the top left corner of Safari? Safari won't close when I click on this since updating. I have to go to File > Quit Safari to close the window...

I don't have that problem. Safari closes when the red button is clicked.

So far, I have not identified any problems with the update. Things are working great.

The exact same thing is happening to me. I have had drop outs every 10 seconds. This weekend I'm calling AppleCare/Apple Corporate to ask for a replacement.

FYI It's on my MacBook Pro.

This is the last straw.
Battery Sucks. and PMS is all screwed up, despite resets.

Oh my

It's freezing in the single-user mode:eek:

Last thing it's saying is:
Extension "com.apple.driver.AppleUSBTCKEyEventDriver" has no kernel dependancy

That's were mine was and running repair permissions and disk repair got it a little farther, but still no good. I'm currently in the middle of an archive/install. What a pain! downloaders be careful.

I had this problem initially as well. I had the Taboo extension installed, which prompts the 'Are you sure' dialog when quitting with multiple tabs open. It must conflict with this feature being included in Safari 3. Removing the plugin fixed the problem for me.

Well, I have Uno running and just watched a DVD. So I'm having no problems at all!

Yes - That was it! Thanks - I forgot I had even installed that...I remembered Ollie's Tab and checked that, but didn't think I installed anything else...

So far, 10.4.11 has caused no problems on a G4 powerbook 13" here - but also hasn't corrected the issue I've had with a HP USB2 pocket media drive not being recognized, either. (That drive still works when plugged in via a hub, and still effectively disables a USB port until rebooting if it's plugged in directly).

So: no new problems, but the compatibility issue I was hoping would be fixed wasn't, either. Oh well.

I had the same problem on my MBP. It tried starting for about 40 mins but eventually shut down!?!?!??? I turned it back on and it booted normally. I haven't noticed any problems since. Not sure what happened...
