WOW, I almost just started crying.

I downloaded the update, restarted, went to use the bathroom, and when I came back, os x was up, and it had the original factory settings. I almost cried. Nothing I had downloaded was still there. I just sat there for a minute thinking "what the hell happened?" when I realized that I just made a new account so my family can use my macbook to surf the web if someone's on the main computer, and that I set it up so os x automatically opens their account. So problem solved, but that was a severe moment of panic.

I wonder if Apple is waiting for 10.4.8 to release the long awaited MBP Menron next Tuesday.

Nope. Makes no difference to Apple what happens. They would release one at one time and another at another time or both at the same time. They'll put out the updated portables when they want to.

Bwahaha, I did something similar the other day. Logged in as "root" for some reason without thinking rather than my normal user name, and started to feel ill as I saw the standard blue background and uncustomized dock spring into view..

Eek! we're already at 10.4.8. I joined the Mac family at 10.3.7. I guess 10.4.9 will be somewhat large for both platforms/architectures since it'll be the last update before Leopard release at MWSF or in an April event

One possible note of caution...

Installed and rebooted on my PowerBook 1.67 and now QuickTime and any QuickTime-related apps (i.e. iTunes, iMovie, etc.) refuse to open. They just sit bouncing in the dock... Can anyone suggest anything?

Intel/InDesign Problem Fixed

Yep, this problem is indeed fixed in InDesign, so that would be a plus for Rosetta.

Restart? or maybe repair permissions. Also launching the apps from the apps folder might help.

Just throwing out the default things i'd do first if i were you

My Translation widget is now broken. When I type out something to translate and click on the little squiggly arrow button, the text disappears, and the dialog box selections reverse themselves (i.e. "Translate from English to German" becomes "Translate from German to English"). No translation occurs.

:(

Is there any significance behind Intel machines having to restart twice?

It took a lot of time too...and I was about to hit restart button on my MBP fearing the update has gone wrong when it rebooted. May be some prank pulled by some geek at Apple:)

Isn't that how it's supposed to work? That happens for me even on 10.4.7. I think it's supposed to translate as you type or something, not dependent on clicking a button.

Aw man...why does Apple keep torturing me by witholding the OpenGL update goodness...I'm chomping at the bit for those World of Warcraft performance boosts on my MacBook. How much longer must I wait???

Hmmm, it has NEVER done that for me. I've always had to click on the button. A second permissions repair has resolved the issues (even though neither of them fixed anything widget-related), though if anything, the translation response time has increased. It's about 30 seconds from button click to translated text now.

I'm now trying to figure out how the hell to make it translate as I type...

Thanks for the reply - unfortunately I've tried all those things (and also run fsck and MacJanitor) but still no change. Hmmmm, puzzling...

Not too long I guess. They will release Macbooks with dedicated graphic card someday...or may be not

Comcast problems

I *think* this related to specific brands/models of cable modems used by Comcast for some of their installations. I vaguely recall reading something about Comcast and Apple working to resolve a bug that would cause slow xfer speeds with specific cable modem hardware and OS X.

Huh, I've consistently gotten between 6-8mbps on my Comcast line everytime I've tested over the past several months.

OMG, does this mean I'm going to have to spend 15 hours downloading as soon as I get my just shipped 24" iMac?
I downloaded the combo update to a USB drive, using my work's 25Mb/s connection, so I don't spend a couple of hours downloading it at home.

It doesn't make any difference to you, I know, but I just wanted to boast.

Any iChat updates?
Anyone know why iChat often disconnects and why initiating a video or audio chat often doesn't work? (both parties have cable broadband)

Well, by "as you type" I mean "in response to typing" -- it's not in anything like real time. Try typing something and letting it sit there for 30 seconds without hitting the button. It works for me (though usually takes longer than that), and it still reverses the "from" and "to" languages if I hit the button.

I think what may be happening is that the widget fails to receive input once it's sent a request for translation, so the button clicks at that point are ineffectual. It *seems* to be responding to it, but it's actually ignoring it because it's busy trying to get a translation for what you just typed.

"airport has been updated. Do you want to allow the new verison to access the same keychain (such as passwords) as the previous version?" "This change is permanent and affects all keychain items used by airport"

So the option isn't "yes" or "no" its "Don't Change" and "Change All". WTF? I want it to access the same keychains, how do I answer?

YES!

I hate those dialogue boxes, too. I don't know what half of them are, they're always asking you to agree to something potentially security-breaking, and there's absolutely no explanation. It's bollocks.

Me too. The OS X startup colours seem slightly different too, or is it just the lager? :p

Safari is indeed quite a bit faster though :D
