Worth Updating

So I have been a Mac user for the at least 4 years now, but have not updated my PB 1.67 to Leopard yet because a lot of people have complained about it. has this new update fixed enough problems to now justify updating? Anyones opinions would be greatly appreciated.

How long did this update take you?

I'm updating my MBP from 10.5.2 to 10.5.3 and it's been hung at "Running Installer Script" (hasn't reboot yet) with no progress bar movement for over an hour.

I need the computer tomorrow and am wondering whether this might just be normal and I should be patient, or if something went wrong with the update and it's time to clone my backup onto the internal HD.

Sites folder has a different icon. …

does it look like this? or does it have people holding hands? (i havent updated yet)

… You can now browse Mail backups just as you would iPhoto backups. …

you could do that in 10.5.0. im waiting for iTunes Time Machine browsing.

I guess that depends on what people have told you that has kept you from upgrading. I don't see why you haven't updated since 10.5.1.:apple:

CMD-Click does NOT open the FOLDER! Next.....

Do people here even try stuff before shooting their mouths off???

And THAT removes all of the OTHER options to view the folder in case you might want to view a folder in different ways for different purposes!

Not to mention it's just a clunky windows-like workaround solution.

MADDENING!

I just refuse to re-arrange the way I've organized my ENTIRE BUSINESS just because of an Apple GUI whim that has been lambasted by practically the entire Mac community since Day 1 of Leopard's release!

Ugggghhhhh!

Works for me... Do people here even try stuff before shooting their mouths off and saying it doesn't work!?!

Folders in a single click

As far as I know, only aliases will open with a single click when in the Dock.

I was pretty sure you were wrong, and pretty sure I had one.

Well, I was right, I do have one. EXCEPT it is empty!

An empty folder on the Dock will open right up to Finder. Anything else, crap!

Wow! I didn't notice anything different after the update, but then I went and opened iPhoto! It opens MUCH faster and is MUCH faster to respond to my commands.

On my old 1 ghz Powerbook under 10.5.2 when I launched iPhoto my powerbook became totally unresponsive for literally like about 60 seconds until iPhoto finished launching. Now under 10.5.3 it only takes like 25 seconds and I can still do other things with my Mac while iPhoto is starting up.

Also, doing any task with iPhoto such as simply viewing a picture is now MUCH improved. Under 10.5.2 between when I double clicked on a thumbnail and when I saw the picture it took literally like 15 seconds. Now in 10.5.3 it only takes about 5 seconds.

So in a relative way, 10.5.3 very significantly improved the launch time and responsive performance of iPhoto. In absolute terms though, it's still a slow program.

The only reason Apple changed the dock since 10.5 is because of public outcry from people like me.
Otherwise, you wouldn't even have the options you have now.

So you're who I've been meaning to thank! :p Seriously, though... that outcry must have been something. I bet it was like Selma circa '68!

How to Open Folder in Dock with Single Click

DOCK DOCK DOCK DOCK!!!!

FIX THE DOCK APPLE!!!!

There is STILL no way to SINGLE-CLICK a FOLDER in the DOCK and have it just, ummmmm, OPEN!!!! DUH!!!!

To have to do 2 clicks just to open a folder in the dock is SOOOOO WINDOWS!

This folder issue bugged me too, but I found a workaround for folders you want to open in the Finder with just a single click in the Dock: Place an alias of the folder in the Dock. You won't be able to access the contents of the folder in the Dock via hierarchical menus, but a single click will open the folder in the Finder.

Others suggested the fix. It was unsatisfactory for Hyper-boy. :(

In other thread-related news, everything seems fine after a full afternoon w/ 5.3; I will have to run some more exhaustive Safari-snappiness tests in the morning, but I think it's safe to say at this stage that Apple has once again succeeded in producing another Safari-snappiness-improvement update. {is this joke dead, yet?}

I haven't had any problems waking the MBP up all day; hopefully that problem is gone for good.

Can you give a few more details about your system setups? What machine, what does "About this mac" tell you your version number is, etc...

ok, here is the following. the console log is just from when i ran software update. there are clearly problems, but i dont know what they mean or how to fix them

Major Problems

Hello Macrumors. I'm having a serious issue and wanted to know if any of you guys could help me figure out the solution to this...anyways. I installed 10.5.3 and now my macbook pro won't work. I'm running on an Intel, Macbook Pro, 3 GB RAM. The standard Mac OS X wallpaper loads, and it allows me to log-in, and nothing else happens. When I press :)apple:+ Spacebar) the finder spotlight appears and I can search things, but nothing displays when I click. I'm really concerned, because I don't have time machine set-up. Please help me out, if there's anything obvious I'm missing let me know.

reading problem

naturally i did not read all 27 pages but my update was only 198 mb. i hope i am not on the bad side of the fence

I don't have the Google Contacts sync option... does anyone else? Does it only show up if you sync an iPhone or iPod touch?

I'm on a MacBook Core Duo 2.0 GHz.

two things seem faster:

Software Update and iPhoto '06

I re-ran software update after updating to 10.5.3 and it took about 5 seconds to run. since leopard came out it has taken minutes to run- much better now!

iphoto, for some reason, is loading much faster now.. and I have iLife '06...
some other poster mentioned it as well, and it is definitely faster at loading my 1,143 pictures!

I ran the combo update (but 198MB in software update, fyi) and no problems so far...

Update went fine, except that Software Update didn't work correctly. After starting up Software Update, it showed the 420MB download. But, once I clicked to start I got a message saying that I did not have sufficient access privileges and that the installer was in the trash. Neither of these messages was true, so I have no idea what's going on.

Then again, I've been having issues with Software Update since upgrading to Leopard. Usually, the problem is Software Update going through the motions and rebooting, and not downloading or installing anything. All of the logs would say that the installations took place, but none of the actual file versions got updated.

So far, my iMac seems to run slower with 10.5.3, but that's more likely due to Spotlight reindexing and the mega backup I've got going with Time Machine (I chose to delete most of my previous backups to free up disk space on my backup drive). I'll see how things go once all this startup activity finishes up, and also run an Xbench test.

One other preliminary observation - the CPU temperature on my iMac seems to run about 5-10 degrees hotter at full load, topping out around ~150F. Strange because the CPU temps went down a few degrees after I upgraded to 10.5.2.

My Macbook now recognizes my wireless connection's password as being encrypted using WPA2. It's always been incorrectly reported as WPA but now it's fixed

Everything has been running smoothly for me so far

My Spotlight didn't re-index though which I thought was strange.

I presume of "nothing else happens" is that there is nothing on the desktop including the Menu bar, Dock, or Icon on the desktop right?

Try launching Activity Monitor using Spotlight... See whether anything not responding... If everything looks alright, choose Dock and press Quit Process (on the left hand corner) and click Force Quit..

Can you open Finder by pressing option+command+space? Browse to the following folders and delete the Caches folder (you'll need to enter your password to delete the first 2 folders):
1. /Library/
2. /System/Library/
3. ~/Library/

Then restart your system... Hopefully it'll be alright... You can empty the trash after you have successfully logged in.

I have 17,404 pictures in my iPhoto '08.. And I can tell you it "flies" in 10.5.3...
