Congratulations, why no?. He was explaining why Apple makes a combo update and what it's meant to be used for. Just because you used it in a different manner doesn't change the original reason the combo update was created does it?

Download MainMenu or Onyx
No, the assertion was that if you go to software update, you get a different sized download, around 190mb if IIRC. My point was, that going to software update was not a guarantee of a smaller download, as evidenced by my 420mb download, regardless of whether it was via software update, or a standalone download.

Installing took quite a long time, but no problems whatsoever. Iphoto seems to be quite a bit faster.

Dynamic background in TM?

Maybe 10.5.2 was the same way, I don't remember, but 10.5.3 has a moving background when you open Time Machine. The star field has motion, basically. As for apps playing nicely with the update, I've had no problems with:
iLife 08
iWork 08
Bento
Grass Games Solitaire
eMedia Guitar Method.
The one annoying thing is SubPubAgent popping up, but that's due to me enabling syncing with .Mac and it appears relatively benign.
Congrats to all the hard workers at Apple for a terrific update! :)

ok, here is the following. the console log is just from when i ran software update. there are clearly problems, but i dont know what they mean or how to fix them
Ok, nothing obvious... You're not running Tiger. ;)

It's possible the package you downloaded is corrupt. It also could be that it's looking for a previous installation receipt that isn't there.

Do you have admin rights on the machine?

You could also try the combo updater to see if it helps-- it might better handle missing components.

If you get desperate, remember you don't have to do a wipe and reinstall of Leopard-- you can do an archive and install which will keep your old files around in a Previous Systems directory.

Edit: I just browsed the Combo Updater package, and I'm not seeing a reference to __choice_su_visible. Sorry.

I've had a really strange experience on my dual 2.7 GHz G5 CPU (8 GB RAM).

When I logged onto software update there were two sw updates to install; the RAW cam support update and the OS X 10.5.3 Update.

The OS X 10.5.3 update showed size at 198MB.

I downloaded only the RAW cam support first and when the software update refreshed, the OS X 10.5.3 then showed a size of 420MB.

Anyway at my internet speed, it will take all day for me to download 420MB. I have 4 Macs to update so I'm going to download once for all 4 computers from the Mac support site.

I had exactly the same experience. It first showed the update at 198MB then after I installed just the camera RAW update it changed to 420MB. Clearly a clue as to why there are two sizes but I have no clue what it means.

Time Machine has always done that! I guess you just never noticed! :)

Anyone tried running the latest version of XSlimmer after the 10.5.3 update? XSlimmer reports a potential estimated savings of 133MB.

When it showed up for me it said 198MB, but when I started downloading it that figure changed to 420. Australian internet is baaaad so this is going to take a while.

Edit: It took hours to download, but it's all working fine now.

I noticed a new folder Sites :

Apparently this update has helped Office 2008 open MUCH quicker. I saw this posted elsewhere and confirmed it on my macbook. The first time I opened Word it was still a bit slow, but after quitting, all subsequent starts were quick. This is true with all Office 2008 apps. Somebody suggests it has to do with a fix to fonts?

In any case, it appears to be true that 10.5.3 is allowing Office 08 to open much quicker.

It takes Word about 16 seconds and Entourage, similar. MBP 2.16 3GB:rolleyes:

Interesting-- just updated my "early 2008" Mac Pro with the Combo Updater and after the third restart it opened to my desktop and launched Setup Assistant... Anybody else have that happen?

Stop making stuff up FANBOYS and get away from Steve Jobs Reality Distortion Field. It's baking your brains.

THERE IS NO WAY TO SINGLE CLICK A FOLDER IN THE DOCK AND HAVE THE FOLDER OPEN AS A FOLDER.

Sure, you can open it as a stack, fan, grid, or list, BUT NOT JUST AS A FOLDER! You have to click in TWO places to simply open a damn folder! And yes, this is important because I have folders with HUNDREDS of links and files in them organized in the manner I require. None of the other options are useful with folders with hundreds of files.

Why remove a feature from TIGER? It just makes no sense.

Ridiculous and very Windows like. This is a simple fix. Just do it Apple.

And I've used Apple computers since 1982, so please don't even go there on my alleged love of Windows, NOT!

DUH!

Safari seems a lot snappier!

But... Mail still crashes if you drag a file to the dock icon (and have at least one signature and plain-text composing)

Just put the folder in the Finder sidebar. Yes, it often might be one additional click (on the Finder icon in the Dock) but it is not the end of the world. The Dock is mainly an app switcher and launcher (the only folder I would consider putting in it would be the applications folder, which just confirms that the Dock is mainly there for launching and switching apps).

Hello Macrumors. I'm having a serious issue and wanted to know if any of you guys could help me figure out the solution to this...anyways. I installed 10.5.3 and now my macbook pro won't work. I'm running on an Intel, Macbook Pro, 3 GB RAM. The standard Mac OS X wallpaper loads, and it allows me to log-in, and nothing else happens. When I press :)apple:+ Spacebar) the finder spotlight appears and I can search things, but nothing displays when I click. I'm really concerned, because I don't have time machine set-up. Please help me out, if there's anything obvious I'm missing let me know.
Usually the Dock should come first, next the Finder (which will give you a menubar and your desktop items). The complete order according to the PIDs (after the login) is:
- launchd
- Folder Actions Dispatcher
- AirPort Base Station Agent
- Spotlight
- UserEventAgent
- pboard
- coreaudio
- Dock
- ATSServer
- SystemUIServer
- Finder

You seem to get as far as Spotlight at least but not up to the Dock. As always in these situations:
(- if possible try logging into another user)
- Save boot (hold down shift while booting)
- Verbose mode (cmd-V during startup)
- single-user mode (cmd-S during startup)
