Email address @mac.com changed after 10.5.3 update

Just installed it on the iMac and its working fine.

This may have been mentioned already, no time to read through entire blog ... I used the update download on an old iBook G4 and used the combo on my 8 Core Mac Pro. Both had my @mac.com mail e-mail address changed to myname-old@mac.com.

Once I spotted this (after a while of using it) I simply deleted the '-old' and everything worked it seems so far.

This has to be a minor failure in the post instal clean up script I should think.

Watch out it may have happened to you! My mail was sent using this '-old' before I spotted it with no error, and I have no idea yet if it got through.

Heheh... 1st startup = perpetual beachball when I click on my name on the logon screen, force reboot required. Gotta love Leopard... poor switchers, out of the frying pan into the fire.

it does, when in software update go to the preferences and you can set it to look for updates.

Thank you very much (I still have so much to learn since switching from a PC).
Alan

Edit
I just checked my settings and "Check Weekly" was checked so I guess I would have to wait until the next weekly check came around before I would be notified. I browse these forums almost daily so I guess I see the updates before my weekly update check - which is why I asked the question.

Sorry to hear you had a problem. I updated 7 Macs yesterday, ranging in age from three old G4s (an iBook and two towers) a MacBook, a Dual G5 and 8 Core Xeons. Other than that weird e-mail issue I mention above, all updated flawlessly. I would respectfully suggest that saying things like that may discourage switchers and is a silly thing to say, even if meant as a joke. Switching from Windows to Mac is a wonderful and totally enjoyable experience for all I have known ... and that is a hell of a lot. Perhaps your Mac's got other issues?
p.s. Each had a bootable back up made first.

There still is a buy while using cover flow view in Finder.

When you rename a file and scroll through with the arrow keys it jumps to the next file. This is a little better than before. It use to jump to the previous directory.

boot camp?

Does anyone know if this fixes the boot camp crash bug during partitioning a new boot camp partition? Used to get a kernel panic during partitioning when using 10.5.2

iCal: Upgrading calendars

Hi all,

So i updated OS X to 5.3 last night with no problems on my MBP. (the file was 198MB for those interested in my file size. ;)) After a successful reboot, i noticed iCal has up a progress bar (although it just a candy cane bar, not an indicator of % complete) that says "Upgrading iCal calendars...." So, thinking nothing of it as part of an OS update, i continued my normal usage. after about 2 hours, i went to bed, progress bar still intact. And now it's morning...progress bar still there. The bar isn't moving lke i think it usualy does, and i *can* navigate throughout iCal (unlike some boxes that prevent you from using the program while its up.)

10 Million $$ questions...should i restart iCal? Should i restart the comp?

Thanks to all!!

PS-when is 10.5.4 coming out? i'm gunna start a thread on what we want fixed in that. :p

OK an update. I've booted into Single-User mode and run FSCK from the command line. It found some errors and successfully repaired them. However, my Mac still won't boot.

I hope all in this situation did read Apple's notes (attached via a link in the window of the update pane)... most importantly: Make a full back up prior to update! I think this is referred to as '101 Computer use' ...

Carbon Copy Cloner makes an excellent bootable back up to any external drive large enough to take your boot disk. To install a major update on any computer without a fully functioning, bootable (and tested) back up, is tempting the wrath of the OS Gods!

In my experience, having a backup almost always ensures nothing goes wrong. OK I may be showing signs of superstition here ;)

Upgraded last night to 10.5.3 on my 2.2 Black MacBook. I believe this computer is now what I expected it to be when I bought it 6 months ago. Knock on wood, I'm fairly confident that my Airport issue has be resolved. I guess I'm one of the lucky few that had a flawless leopard install besides this issue. And my what an annoying issue it is(WAS!)!

Thanks :apple:Apple!

10.5.3 improved one of the biggest pet peaves of mine since switching to a MacBook, it noticeably improved the speaker volume.

My Adobe CS3 apps and Office 2008 apps also open MUCH quicker after they've been opened for the first time.

Does this suggest you had a problem the first time around?
It might have been Little Snitch the first time around or some other service that just hanged on reboot.

I uninstalled Little Snitch and then managed to screw up the installer a second time. After restoring from Time Machine again I was able to make a successful update. I still think I should just wipe the drive and start with 10.5.0 and work my way back up.

10.5.3 actually gave me some trouble. Thanks Apple.

Sounds like your in the minority. You probably have all kinds of ridiculous 3rd party crap installed, but of course you'd never admit to it.

Excellent contribution to the discussion.

It certainly is, stop being sarcastic.

If people just hear all the bad things it will give them the wrong impression, you want to make sure people hear positive things about the update, too.

OK an update. I've booted into Single-User mode and run FSCK from the command line. It found some errors and successfully repaired them. However, my Mac still won't boot. It seems to be stuck continually writing crash logs to disk. I took a photo, hopefully its clear enough for you to see.

[EDIT] Managed to find out what the crash log says.

Looks like a third party software conflict. Do you have some third party software that's changing your menu bar to not be translucent, or applying a visual theme, etc.?

Try holding down shift while logging in/restarting.

You want me to lie in order to not discourage switchers?

Perhaps your Mac's got other issues?
It's an iMac 24" 2.4 GHz, bought in December '07, came with Leopard preinstalled. No custom login scripts, funky 3rd party extensions or other wizardry, just Leopard + iLife + iWork + Adobe CS3. No 3rd party peripherals, just a BT Mighty Mouse, wired alu keyboard and an iPod dock. All prior software updates installed by the book. A privileged existance compared to the hell I've put my Vista PCs through. But those work, the Mac does not, as it won't even let me effing log on. If hangs and gives me a spinning beachball before I can enter my account password. This after installing an OS update that allegedly 'fixes' things.

So what do I do now? Had this been a Windows machine, well first off it wouldn't freeze on login but more importantly I'd be able to revert the machine to its pre-update state using System Restore. How do I log in when it won't let me, and how do I revert to 10.5.2 in the event that I'll manage to log in?

I certainly hope so, or are you used to a majority having problems?

If Adobe Creative Suite 3 Web Premium is "ricidulous 3rd party crap" then I'm guilty as charged. Oh, and a custom desktop image. Everything else on it was made by Apple, Inc.

Nope I don't. I've done an Archive/Install now so just waiting for the combo 10.5.3 update to download.

In typical Apple fashion my Finder crashed after the reboot, and upon restarting the system froze at a gray screen... can they give me an update that fixes the problems with updating a system?

Either way it's working fine now after the second restart, which is what I usually have to do with my Macs to clear everything up.

It looks like /Library and other places still have trashed permissions from the 10.5.3 update. I think I'll just reinstall OS X when I get home from work today.

Once again, did you upgrade your computer to Leopard or did it come with it?

I may have found a pattern here, although of course this problem is not major.

Anubus, all I can say is you probably broke something yourself. Fooling with terminal, installing 3rd party crap, etc. No one else has your issue from what I've read. So, depicting your problem as fact to switchers is lying. Had it been a Windows machine? Your logic is nonexistent. I've had plenty of Windows computers freeze at login. Sounds like your a troll more than anything. Lucky for us most "switchers" probably aren't geeky enough to be on macrumors to begin with.....

Before everyone starts reminiscing about how they "wanted" their computers to be a few months ago, go use a Windbloze computer (Vista specifically), then get back with me...We've got it pretty darned good here in the Apple camp, it sounds like all most people want to do is complain. What are your other choices? Linux? Good luck with that unless your a mega-geek. "OMGZ!!11one!!11 I can use the command line to make my computer make hot love to meeeee I am amazing in my circle of sedentary zero-social skills friends!!11one!!1"

Wow ! Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition. Did you check the side effects info on your meds bottle ? :D
