Airport Extremely Offline

Upgraded yesterday afternoon... just can't help myself. Within a hour, my wireless network was working sluggishly. Not long after that, it wasn't working at all. Had to take the Airport Extreme completely out of the loop in order to get even some minor speed out of the DSL connection.

I know that the choppiness of animations is gone, guess there are better x3100 drivers. Other than that I don't see any real changes, just everything works faster, I think.

MBP Display crazy after 10.5.3 update

Yes... everything FINE!!! no problem at all (1.1.4)

cheers

Sounds good for you. When I updated to 10.5.3, I noticed that my MBP's LCD Display went a little bright, and the colors looked funny. I'm not sure if that's because they changed the display driver in the update, or they changed colors in some of the programs -- but in my attempts to re-calibrate it, I think I actually made it worse, and this is something with which I've had lots of experience.

spaces

Am I the only one with problems with Spaces? I had no issues in 10.5.2 but now I can't choose an app from the dock to go to a different Space. The apps menu bar may show up but not the open page for that app. At other times even going to a Space via the Spaces menu doesn't work properly. For me 10.5.2 Spaces worked. Now it's broken. Not a huge issue but very curious if I should work on this or it's common to others.

STILL not detecting network shares...

Everything looks good so far, EXCEPT why the hell do my airdisks and Windows files shares STILL not automatically mount in the Finder? How many patches will it take to fix something that was working great in Tiger...

Just put the folder in the Finder sidebar. Yes, it often might be one additional click (on the Finder icon in the Dock) but it is not the end of the world. The Dock is mainly an app switcher and launcher (the only folder I would consider putting in it would be the applications folder, which just confirms that the Dock is mainly there for launching and switching apps).

The simplicity of being able to single-click on a folder in the dock and have it just open as a folder (as 1 of many options) is definitely unappreciated here.
Macs are supposed to be about simplicity and ease of use.

This is a feature in Tiger that was removed for no good reason.

Who wants to pay over $100 for an operating system upgrade only to find out they've got to change the entire method they use to store & view data on their Mac or click in multiple places just to open a darn folder from the dock? This is like a 100X a day annoyance for me using Leopard.

And the workaround is completely counter-intuitive and Windows-like.
You have to Right-click, THEN LEFT-CLICK!
Bill Gates would be proud! HAHA!

Geez Apple, it's a simple fix. Just add an option to View Content as a Folder. Is that really so difficult?

Good tip, thanks. Is CCC some third party thing? I googled and something about "Bombich Software" came up.

(IMO it's easy on a PC, depending on OS version of course. Vista Ultimate lets you create a 1:1 copy of the entire computer [boot drive + additional drives] for backup purposes. No such luck if you're on Vista Home or XP).

Yep that is the creator. Worth every penny and more. I also used Super Duper for a while but it has let me down a few times since Leopard, even the latest version. I am sure they will fix this but CCC has never failed me. You can also get from

Are you talking about detection or mounting?

Did network shares mount automatically in Tiger, so that you didn't have to put the share in Login Items and have a stupid Finder window open on every startup?

Or do you mean that Finder isn't even detecting their presence? In that case you have to set the firewall to "Accept all incoming connections". Scary, I know, but it's the only way I know of... my iMac was completely oblivious of the presence of any computers or NAS drives until I threw the firewall wide open. As I recall, the revamped firewall was one of the most hated things about Leopard when it came out...

help!

what does this mean?

Interesting-- just updated my "early 2008" Mac Pro with the Combo Updater and after the third restart it opened to my desktop and launched Setup Assistant... Anybody else have that happen?

Yep, I got that on G5. I didn't have a smooth shutdown, had to unplug/turnoff my ext. firewire drive with the combo before shutdown would finish after update.

I had to unplug all my externals also... it locked up on my on the first shut down. I am thinking next time around I will take everything off line, printers, external hd, firewire hub, usb hubs etc, to do the update.

Didn't you make this identical post a while back?

Is it that hard to release an update which doesn't kill all of my personalised keyboard shortcuts?

I didn't realize how much I'd become accustomed to my shortcuts until I put 10.5.3 on. I use ctrl-1 through ctrl-4 for my spaces. And when I upgraded, I had to think for a second how to get there without the keyboard.

I wonder if there is a way to save a configuration of keyboard shortcuts so that it can be reloaded after an update.

So far my spaces are working fine. I had to remap my keyboard shortcuts to get there, but my applications go where they're supposed to.

If I understand your post, you're saying that if you have Mail in space 2, and Safari in space 1, if you click their docked icon it should switch properly to each? If so, that works fine for me.

Are there new graphics drivers in the 10.5.3 update? Has anyone been able to confirm?

My animations are smoother and colors are drastically more vibrant on my SR MBP.... Its unmistakeable that something has changed, but was it the drivers?

I just refuse to re-arrange the way I've organized my ENTIRE BUSINESS just because of an Apple GUI whim that has been lambasted by practically the entire Mac community since Day 1 of Leopard's release!

Ugggghhhhh!

AHEM just a small OCD issue there, don't cha know/

After updating and waiting for ages for my MBP to restart, when it finally did, it transported itself into hyperspace and sent me a holographic message noting that it is now running a 256-core quantum processor with 16TB of plasma RAM. Thats all well and good, but I'm really, REALLY angry apple, that the holographic message was displayed using the same nasty typeface from 10.5.2. AND IN GREY!!±!! AND, I STILL can't make the computer do what I want by typing the wrong commands into hacked software (via multitouch hyper-keyboard obv).

This update really is rubbish and you never listen to your customers (ie. me).

Apple, when will you give ME what I WANT!!!!!!!

.ahem. relax.

(Not aimed at you onejed1) !

Woa there! better lay off watching those marathon sessions of DR Who on absolute rubbish (BBC 1) I think your positronic mesh is collapsing:p
