Just installed and updated from 10.5.4 to 10.5.6 plus a number of other updates (iTunes, Java etc)... and everything is fine, things seems a little smoother and faster, except be warned that Time Machine might need a bit of time to think about things before running its next cycle... mine is now backing up a new 2.2Gb it found from somewhere, but it's no probs over FW800. :)

How long did it take your time machine to finish backup? Because mine is loading forever and it's still in "preparing for backup" mode.

Updated last night (377MB on Core Duo MacBook) and so far everything is good. The download and reboot only took a few minutes.

Preparing for backup took about 12-15 minutes on a MBP's 5400rpm drive to a Lacie external FW800 drive. I was just about to quit it and post here, then noticed it had started to do its thing in its System Preferences setting.

Another bug still there

Hi all,

In the Finder, the item (file or folder) name is more than one line and you want to delete the last line:

place the cursor on the first char of the last line,
press the shift key and the down arrow key,

nothing happens, but I was expecting a selection of the whole last line.

To get what I want, I need to go one character in the last line and do what I explain earlier: it works. All you need to do is to delete the remainding char.

Weird!

AND EASY TO FIND, and to be totally honest, I do not make any bug hunt on Apple OS.

My coworker and I both have this same hang. We both own MBPs. I own a late 2007 model, he owns early 2008.

Out of curiosity, does everyone effected have macports installed? My shot in the dark idea is that macports changes a default path which halts the upgrade.

Here are software update logs until hang:

I didn't have macports installed... had fink installed about 2-3 years ago, but got rid of it (or at least tried to).

Looking around a bit, I found this:

/Library/Updates/Mac OS X Update/Packages/MacOSXUpd10.5.6Patch.pkg

I expected this to be 190MB but it was only 41MB... so maybe some problem with the download for MBPs of a certain vintage.

I downloaded the combo update and it installed with no problem.

Mine never did start. I opened the TM disk and found the latest backup directory to "Get Info" on it. When I did that the disk started spinning and TM started "backing up" (it hasn't finished yet and I have to shutdown so I don't know if it will). Also found this thread:

claims to uncheck shutdown disks in Energy Prefs

No problems there for me. It even seems like my connection with my Time Capsule has become faster?

I really hope this fixes my issues with my ATI X1900 XT graphics card. That thing has been a real nightmare at times.

P-Worm

ive also had problems with that card, but then one day i figured there was an old firmware update for it, which didnt show up on software update. Whats ur firmware version of the card's drivers?

Is it me or has the update changed my battery menu options in the menubar. Now I can no longer change the preferences from better battery savings to normal or better performance from the menu bar. I have actually go into system preferences now.:confused:

Yup me too! :( Oh well, I'm not THAT lazy..

could someone check ram stability.

Funny, i wasnt going to check for that untill u gave me the idea. I might be wrong, but on my macpro it feels it handles ram better! I opened up many apps to hog my ram (3 photoshop, vmware with windows, ALOT finder windows). After closing them, i actually think it never had went back to the original ram used before i open them (meh maybe little more) so fast, and while in the past i would feel it "laggin" for few seconds, now it was smooth all the way! Wow, thnx i wouldnt have noticed heh. definitelly recommend the update, it improved stability and speed for me

EDIT: haha now it does connect to my wireless after waking it up from sleep. :D

I downloaded the combo update and it installed with no problem.

After having one update fail and another on a different system (with almost identical disk) succeed, my current theory is that the culprit is the "Download important updates automatically" setting. On the one that failed this was set (and the .pkg was too small) the one that succeeded did not have that set. I bet I interrupted the download without realizing it (it's a laptop), and the software does not recognize when that happens. I'll also guess that most of the people who had trouble had laptops, and had that setting set as well...

oh btw, i ran benchmarks for safari. Safari isn't faster at all cases, but the javascript rendering is A LOT faster, its even faster than opera now

Wow. I've installed Vista SP1, XP SP3, and a couple of Windows Server service packs - and haven't had this much drama.

Even though, as I've said, I'd never think of doing a service pack or a Patch Tuesday a few days before a trip to Europe or China - when I come home and install them "it just works"™.

Some of the comments are right on - Apple is becoming Microsoft, and Microsoft is becoming Apple. In particular, I like the comments like "Are you stupid? Use the combo update. Software Update never works."

Except for Mr. Lawyer - everything is always perfect in his little world.

^ +1 : Agreed (including the remark about mr. Lawyer) :)

I don't know if anyone's caught this...

The restart screen is kind of different, and it no longer waits 2 minutes, only 1.

Someone mentioned the possibility of having H.264 video being GPU accelerated now (on non-unibody Macs). I'm at work so I can't check. Has anyone noticed this?

Maybe a minor flaw: In the article Apple Releases Mac OS X 10.5.6 Arnold Kim writes: "Mac OS X 10.5.6 Update (372 MB) - for users currently running OS X 10.5.5".

I had running OS X 10.5.5 on the machine in the signature and my update was 190 MB according to the application "Software Update".

The update is different sizes depending on what machine you have. I had 190MB install as well but for recent unibody people I believe theirs was 372MB. The combo update was 668.8MBs.

I don't know if anyone's caught this...

It has been like that since Leopard iirc.
