Installed on everything Mac, so "I'm good to go!" Everything seems to be running smoothly and "snappier" (not sure what that means, but the War Department was on the MBA and those were her words). Dang, just looked at:

"MobileMe: Contacts, calendars, and bookmarks on a Mac automatically sync within a minute of the change being made on the computer, another device, or the web at me.com."

That's the exact reason I didn't renew MobileMe. Might have to take another look at that one...

Whole lotta' drama here for "it just works"

Wow. I've installed Vista SP1, XP SP3, and a couple of Windows Server service packs - and haven't had this much drama.

Even though, as I've said, I'd never think of doing a service pack or a Patch Tuesday a few days before a trip to Europe or China - when I come home and install them "it just works"™.

Some of the comments are right on - Apple is becoming Microsoft, and Microsoft is becoming Apple. In particular, I like the comments like "Are you stupid? Use the combo update. Software Update never works."

It's something up with your set up, I have 5 macs and two PEECEEs and an iPhone all working perfectly ... honest. I am sure you have tried starting over with set up?

I have reset sync data from my computer to MobileMe, but that doesn't solve the problem.

All morning I have tried on three different computers. All pretty new. Every time I restart after the download, the blue bar is stopped/stalled at less than 1/4" over the galaxy background. No movement beyond that

I've had to manually shut down and restart and 10.5.5 remains. No update. It won't install after that.

I've left one on for 60 minutes now with no movement whatsoever????!!

Download and install the 10.5.6 Combo Update.

I'm 16 pages into reading the thread and have yet to find someone with the same issue, so forgive me if I missed it somewhere.

My installation has been stuck for over an hour, but not on "configuring installation." Rather, the progress bar is stuck at the very beginning of "finishing installation," so I'm extremely wary of force restarting, sine my early 08 MBP has gone through a chunk of the update process.

Not sure if it has much to do with the problem, but right before restarting for the update, I was loading sings into iTunes and repeatedly got a "cannot save iTunes library error" (-54). I tried to force quit iTunes, but both iTunes and LastFM refused to force quit, and only quit as part of the update restart. Could that be a reason for the stalled update? I do have a backup, but it's about 2 weeks old.

Any advice?

Actually, No! At first, I simply did the update via Software Update. Nothing changed.... my 2.16 Core 2 Duo (3GB RAM) MBP would still take something like 4 seconds just to display "About this Mac", you got the picture.

Got it.. I have known about the ability of a combo update to fix some problems on OSX without a re-install. I assumed you were referring to the cache resets in 10.5.6, which happen with either update, but your problem/cure was certainly something different.

Any word on the AirPort?

I've been struggling with that for days. It might just be a bad connection but the router is not that far away and it keeps dropping the connection. GRR.

I would be less worried about the backup; if your system is messed up, you can do an Archive & Install from your original DVD and that should leave you in good shape. And if not, you've still got the backup.

If you have another Mac & firewire cable, you can boot your system in Target Mode and try applying the combo update from another Mac onto your hard disk. As others are pointing out, it can correct many problems.

AN IMPORTANT WORD FOR THOSE OF YOU WITH STALLED INSTALLS:

I recall when i went from tiger to leopard and had huge problems.
turns out that when i plugged in a logitech keyboard some software installed called "application enhancer" or something like that.

this caused leopard to go nuts and i had hours of backing up through windows xp installed on the machine, and then wiped the computer and started over.

so if you are having these problems, do you have any thirdparty periphial stuff running?

INSTALLING NOW TO TEST THESE "FIXES"' FOR ATI CARDS...

the update is downloading fast, but it is going 2mb per second so that is why... i will let you know what the answer to my own question is ;)

This may have always been here...but I don't ever remember seeing it so:
If you right click a stack to change its settings you can now "View content as" a list. I've been looking for something like this because I have many levels of folders in my documents. I've played around with stacks' settings before, and I don't recall this. Possible a cool new feature (though not as appealing to the eye as fan for some, I guess).

I'm using 4GB Crucial aftermarket -- was hanging occasionally before the firmware release last week. All seems ok now -- but who really knows for sure.

I've read that hte firmware update didn't help anything, and your new Crucial ram might have just been a lucky one.

I want Apple to release an update so that, you know, regular ram can be used. Is that too much to ask?

Just updated my Alu MB without ANY problems... This was my first ever point update :D YAY! smooth...

I have one of the new unibody MacBook's with 4 GB of Apple Ram.

The update downloaded just fine. It rebooted to install and it did it's thing. Took a long while. Then it came back saying the update failed because it couldn't find some file in "/". The message only had a reboot button. I rebooted and I got the blinking folder icon. A subsequent reboot just hangs and nothing ever comes up. Luckily I had a super duper backup on an external drive. I swapped it out and connected the failed drive via USB to do a disk repair but both a repair and verify fail.

This is the first time I've ever had a problem with an update.

Any thoughts?

No, but I have the same configuration and after reading your post I decided to go with the combo update. No problems; 10.5.6 came right up.

Ok so I went onto Apple's site and downloaded the combo 10.5.6 file, and right when it finished it said mounting failed and is labeled as a .dmg file. What could be the problem? That took me a long time to download (600mb+) and now I cannot open to install.

Validation

Ok I have tried Software update combo and regular and none have worked!
Combo and regular, off of apples site, wont even open (Mount) and software update loads and then asks to restart where it then tells me it cannot validate it

I just wanna update my computer! :(
I have the 2.4Ghz santa rosa MBP with 4Gb ram 320Gb HD
any advice?

What do you think it's going on... why it fixes by itself after a while?

It may just be Spotlight still indexing... I would give it a few more minutes, and if it doesn't improve, do a restart...
