If the 10.5 inch shares same footprint as 9.7....... I just hope that the accessories (Smart keyboard, back case etc) will work across both models. Would be a harder upgrade decision (currently have 9.7 pro) if also need to fork out for all the extras again!!!

Waiting to update my iPad mini 3 to a mini Pro. As an artist, I want to use the Apple Pencil for sketching, as well as have the faster Pro features for video editing and such. Love the portability of the iPad mini. But if Apple doesn't update the mini to Pro, then I'll probably get the 10.5" bezel-less iPad Pro. Either way, I'm excited to finally be upgrading to a pro ipad.

Steve Jobs said the tablet would eventually replace PCs for the majority and it felt like that was happening at first, but since he died the tablet had kinda stalled. It just feels like a big smartphone, still not capable of really replacing a PC.

We'll never really know how he might have progressed the OS or use cases. This is something TC is incapable of doing. He's a beancounter robot that just thinks tinkering with existing hardware and raising prices for no added value is the solution to everything.

I've never been able to find a use for tablets. Ever. I know, I know, then I'm just not part of Apple's market here anyway...

That said, anyone else like me who isn't so into tablets find the iPad mini the most appealing? I'd hate to see Apple give up on it.

Looking forward to this. I love my 9.7" iPad Pro, but have been saying since I bought it that I wish the screen was as bigger taking up the space now occupied by the bezels.

Oh god, not another screen resolution! Mass adoption of the 12.9" iPad Pro's 2732x2048 resolution has been downright terrible compared to past new iOS screen resolutions (still no native resolution support on the HBONow or Facebook apps, which is ridiculous).

Also, is it me or does the iPad mini not seem long for this world? Sad.

LOL @ Apple selling an iPad Pro for $299. Apple hasn't dropped prices for its 3 year old products yet they expect them to price a brand new product lower than last gen version of the same thing?

Unless the "iPad Pro" is just the Air 2 rebranded. Then it makes sense, other than the name being "Pro"

Aesthetically I like the idea of much smaller side bezels, but I wonder how easy it would be to hold without causing problems with multi touch. I know the sw has algos to help with this, but it needs more work. I would love it to have the same design as the iPhone SE where there is also a bottom edge to grip.

I'm sure Apple will design the touch interface to reject side finger touches much the same way they already have palm rejection technology.

I agree with Tim on this one - satisfaction and usage are high on Ipads and their only 'problem' is that they last too long. However, Apple it's not helping themselves here, I would like to replace 3 ipad mini but I am not upgrading them until they are brought up date. So we have a chicken and egg problem - should Apple upgrade models not selling the quantities they want or should people stop buying until they are updated.

I love my 12.9 iPad Pro as content consumption and occasional email. Forget about doing work on it for my case because I am graphic designer. Except Astropad.
Apple needs to make the bezel almost gone and revamp the iOS with file structure like MacOS. The way it is, smaller improvements won't help sell more iPads. I am keeping mine for few years until slow to a crawl, unless they really make it better.

Hope this is wrong. I was really wanting it to have the same PPI as the iPad Mini so it could render the same UI as the iPad Pro, just at a smaller scale. I still think it will probably be this way because it would create yet another display resolution for developers to support. If it was the same as the iPad Pro, just at a higher PPI, then there is nothing to change and the iPad Pro 12.9" apps will work exactly the same on the smaller Pro.

This seems like the best option for everybody, but probably does add a little cost to the device itself. It also seems too coincidental that they chose 10.5" which makes it a perfect fit for the iPad Mini PPI. Otherwise why not choose something a little bigger like 10.9" to separate it from the 9.7" model? Even so I think all these displays are too close in size. It would be differentiated from the 9.7" model more if it scaled the 12.9" Pro sized apps. Pros need more screen real estate to work. It's a bit tight trying to multitask on the 9.7" iPad.

Low cost and Pro in the same sentence. These people obviously don't know what they're talking about.

To me a 'low cost iPad' will be an iPad Air 2 with an A9X chip in it (i.e. old cameras - 1.2/8MP, no smart connector, no truetone screen, 2 speakers). Mind you, for most people that's plenty!

A9X, 4 speakers and 399 dollars. I'd buy that. Don't care about cameras, connectors and true tone, but the speakers are a must for a consumption device.

Oh and Apple should really stop with the fragmentation. Don't they learn?

I think the biggest issue is the apps. The iPad apps have come along way but they're still not nearly as robust and efficient at every day usage as a laptop running equivalent apps. I personally like iOS I do wish that the iPad was more optimized for getting serious work done.

Made me think of how they called iOS 10 the biggest iOS update ever yet didnt mention a single iPad feature that makes it stand out from an iPod Touch / iPhone lol

Dont see a reason to update from an Air 2 at all. It cant do anything my iPhone 7 Plus cant do

Good Point. If they do release this 10.5 inch iPad, then I would assume they would have the smart connector/smart keyboard and Apple Pencil support. Otherwise it would be fragmented across from the other iPad models. My guess is it will support those features. Especially the smart connector for the keyboard, if Apple truly intends to live up to its promise with the laptop being replaced by the iPad.

A 10.5" screen size within the old 9.7" frame will be hugely popular. Screen size is one of the main limiting factors for many people (like myself!) who increasingly look for ways to replace a laptop with the more portable iPad. Some of the other limitations (no file system, lack of trackpad support, and inferior versions of desktop apps) will undoubtedly be around for many years to come....

...Nevertheless, I still love my iPad and will continue to use one every day.

I'm not trying to be sarcastic here. Can you name a few that you would consider major changes?

Nobody has touched the Springboard in years. App interoperability with the share sheet is really minor.
The Control Center and the "Dashboard" with Extension is far too limited.
Multitasking is way too limited.

I'm really curious what you think.

Apple - in my humble opinion - should first introduce user profiles.
That's easy with Touch ID.
Right now, you cannot hand someone your unlocked phone to make a call or let them try an App or Google.

Then, Apple should "invent" the Home Directory ;)
Yes, I'm serious. A place where I can organise local data that is not copied to App Sandboxes n times when you use them.

Also, Apple should consider adapting more of a classic Desktop paradigm.
Why can't Mail on the Homescreen push away some rows of icons and show 5 mails I can drag and drop on another App Icon?

As long as iOS is so static and "page based" in 2017, it is nearly is useful as it was around 2009 with the iPhone 4.
I ignored the iPhone, 3G and 3GS on purpose.

Mu opinion is that iOS, except for "design philosophy", has not changed at all.
Especially ifg you consider the hardware specs of the recent iPad's.

... and still you can mostly watch Videos with YT, Netflix, or iTunes.

I own many iOS devices, even the 12,9" with a pencil, but without keyboard.
Why? Because I don"t like to type with my hands directly infront of the screen.

But Apple does not like BT pairing ...

No, the iPad especially could be a great device if Apple just would open up.
It's not even about Developer Teams. iOS probably has more teams working on it that the Apple TV (which is iOS), or the Mac.

I'm honestly interested in your thoughts.

This whole rumour sounds like a lot of grasping at nothing.

I don't think any of it's going to be true. 4 new "Pro" ipads? 3+ different resolutions to support?

Nhahhhh
