I’d like to get recommendations for an HDMI cable.
I have the Belkin UltraHD 4k High Speed cable (2m) connected to mine. Bought it direct from Apple. Absolutely no issues, its a certified cable and excellent quality. Although it is a bit expensive at 30 dollars, but it provides trouble free operation unlike some cables I’ve had in the past that claimed they are certified and they weren’t up to the task.

Can somebody tell me the point of the Apple TV? Genuine question.

We have a smart TV and it's just simpler to use its own apps for things like Netflix or Amazon Prime, rather than mess around switching HDMI input and booting-up the Apple TV (which we do have, albeit an older one).

If I want to watch Apple TV shows then I do so on my phone, or MacBook.

Just about the only reason I've ever seen anybody use an Apple TV is for beaming photos onto the big TV screen. But that's not exactly an everyday thing.
I had the same question and later bought an Apple TV 4K and now use it exclusively. Everyone will have a different answer, but here is mine:

- Many of the apps on smart TVs are poorly maintained. Specifically, the Plex app was terrible on our Samsung TV, and it was the “best” Plex client available. Being able to use Infuse on my Apple TV is worth a lot to me.
- Small quality of life features that add up. For me, being able to use AirPods seamlessly is a plus (my wife loves to watch loud TV shows while I’m still asleep and giving her an easy way to watch quietly is great). We also enjoy the Home integrations.
- Little known fact, but many Smart TV operating systems spy on you. Your viewing data is monetized and sold to advertisers, including what app, what show, when, how long, etc. I wanted to vote with my wallet against this non-sense and also have my personal privacy protected.

Not spending another dime on ATV hardware until they fix the TV app. I have over 1500 movies and TV shows yet the app always says I have no purchases. However, I can use the TV app built in to any smart TV or streaming device and it works fine. Apple can't fix the signature app on their own hardware. Never again...

If I already have a Mac mini connected to my TV - what can I gain with an Apple TV device?
The macOS TV app can stream up to 4K.
Is there really anything superior in Apple TV device except the remote may be?

Much lower price. Many people do not need a Mac mini and would not want to pay the much higher price of one.

I still don't understand why a streaming box needs 128GB of storage. Even caching a 4K movie during playback is a lot less than that.

Does apple expect us to download a bunch of large games and install them directly on it?
For those questioning the 128GB, the VLC app allows you to use its “cache” (think “Other” storage) to copy movies and shows to the Apple TV.

Also, all Apple Arcade games are installed to the unit and some are quite large.

Thumbs up on having 1500 movies! 👏 I’m almost exactly halfway there with around 750.

That sucks to hear your movies aren’t showing. Maybe you broke tvOS with the sheer size of your collection lol. Have you tried logging out of your iCloud account and back in? You should probably talk to Apple support about that.

You are spending more on a capable device not a locked in only streaming device. A M1 MacMini will last you 8-10 years and can be used as a dedicated NAS, remote Mac to be used on an iPhone or iPad. Can this be done on an AppleTV.
No desire to do any of that, just want to watch Netflix, Disney+ and Prime on my TV. The cheap ATV fills that role for me nicely.

Why is there a charging cable? My Samsung Frame TV remote charges itself when you lay it face down. So much simpler.

Depends what you mean, it took an embarrassingly long time for 4k to be supported on Youtube, this thing is just getting HDR10+ competing platforms have had this for a while, it has no AV1 support

I would say given the price it lags behind the competition
What does Apple have to do with Google being really slow to update the YouTube app to support 4K output?

We’ve had one on each tv since 2011. Smart tvs have a terrible track record of software support. With small children and those not tech-inclined, one solution for all tvs is a huge plus. And the Apple TV turns on the tv, etc. automatically. We haven’t used the stock tv remotes in years (because the gaming consoles and dvd/Blu-ray players also switch the tv to the appropriate input automatically as well).

It propably matters which kind of smart TV you have, i have 75" qled, but it's from 2017. So smart experience and the 3rd apps are quite laggy and outdated. With Apple TV i can enjoy the full potential of my big screen, it made it worth because honestly out of the box it was really bad except the TV quality now the smart experience is also very smooth.
Exactly this. My 2015 Apple TV HD still runs as smooth as the day I first hooked it up. Smart tv software support cannot compare.

Those groups either have an iPad or or Phone. Most TV’s have AirPlay support and there are better options for those groups to casually game or even step up to advance games for a fraction of the cost and more capable compared to an AppleTV.
My TV does not have AirPlay support and my kids (4,6) do not have iPads or iPhones. Too too young for an iPhone and not careful enough with their stuff for an iPad yet. Once they stop breaking their tablets they can have an iPad. Anyhow they do game on our Apple TVs. They have switches but also like to game on the Apple TV.

Apple TV kind of confuses me. Is it that much better than just using the Apple TV app on an OLED LG tv?
I don’t own a smart TV but even if did have one I’d still own an Apple TV because

Apple TV has a better range of apps

Apple TV is updated more frequently and for longer.

Apple TV supports services like Apple Arcade that a smart TV wouldn’t support.

Better integration with fitness plus

Can use my phone/iPads to control the Apple TV including volume when connected to HomePods.

Can use my HomePods as speakers for my Apple TV.

Apple TV has a much better interface.

Better Siri support.

Totally valid points. Probably comes down to how much particular person would use those things. If you are super entrenched in the ecosystem with Apple Arcade, Apple TV+ and fitness seems like a no brainer.

But for people like me that only use Apple TV + for the odd series or movie here and there, as long as your Smart TV doesn’t struggle with the App that’s probably good enough.

It’s been good enough for me at least. But if I got into some of those other Apple subs, especially Apple Arcade one day, I’d probably pick one up. But also don’t honestly going that route any time soon. Especially Apple Arcade.

What would you have it do with 120Hz support? I don't think there's much in the way of games on Apple TV that could make use of it, there aren't any 120Hz movies, and the Apple TV can already do "Match Content" (I think that's the name?) to send 24/30/60 Hz content to the TV at the various native rates.

Only thing I could see as an advantage would be to keep the Apple TV => TV link at a constant 120Hz rate, so that you could switch between 24/30/60 Hz content without any changeover flicker. I'm guessing Apple sees that as a fairly minor gain that doesn't, at this point, offset the additional complexity and cost (especially keeping in mind that few people would have the capacity to use it, and fewer still would actually take advantage of it).
So much more comfortable for your eyes because you don’t have the 60 Hertz Flickering. Anyway the content does not need to be 120hz it can be ‘filled’ just as on Mac Mini with gaming monitor on 144 Hz for photo editing, office work etc. I don’t want to go back to old 60 Hz!

Apple's part was that they were selling an overpriced streaming device that lacked several features that much cheaper devices from Amazon, Roku etc had.

Like anything people aren't going to rush to support a platform nobody uses ..
