Now if apple would just allow the geforce now app with keyboard and mouse support… apple arcade plus AAA titles per stream and the potential need for a console would go way down…

How does the new remote not have precision location tracking? It's the perfect integration.

I kept upgrading each time a new one came out so the three TVs in my house would eventually move beyond the Apple TV 3 and be able to run full apps and have good AirPlay 2. I have no reason to upgrade now. I have never used my current Apple TV, which is the last generation, and thought "This isn't responsive enough." or "This is too fat." The other TVs are a kids TV downstairs and the TV in my workshop and both are 1080p, so I don't care.

At this point the only thing that could get me to upgrade my Apple TV is if Apple adds an NFL streaming package and the new Apple TV can only run multiple game streams at the same time where I can swipe between audio. Imagine a four screen split, and you can focus on any game at any time by pushing the main game top center with the other three games small along the bottom, and you can swipe between them to focus a game, or swap between the four cells to change audio, and have multiple closed captions on each video, and it all does it smoothly and quickly with nice transition animations. And you could swipe up and down on each tile to change "channels" between other available games. And maybe it could have a game ticker along the bottom for all the games, and also the ability to switch game audio to the local radio broadcasters or other former players who are streaming during the game. Think like the Manning brothers or Pat McAfee and a guest doing different games. Ok this kinda just turned into what I want from their NFL package but if they required a new Apple TV to get it I would buy it no question.

AppleTV the app is like any individual app on a Mac, iPhone or iPad.

AppleTV the hardware is much more like the Mac, iPhone or iPad in that it is capable of running MANY apps beyond only that one.

I understand the confusion due to Apple choosing to use the same name for 2 very different things.
I really don’t understand why they have the same name for them. It’s so stupid.

I recently watched the Apple TV app announcement and even the presenter paused after saying “Apple TV” and then said “app” after a couple of seconds. “The Apple TV… app”. It’s like they had to clarify what they were talking about.

They should change the name of the hardware to Apple Home Hub or something, as it is a multipurpose device. Most people I talk to get confused because they have 3 products with very similar names: Apple TV 4K, Apple TV app, Apple TV+. Most of them also refer to the streaming service as “Apple TV” & get confused if I tell them I’m referring to the box or the app (no one says 4K when referring to the hardware either).

They should also let you download iTunes Store/Apple TV Store purchases to the box and provide the storage for giant libraries. I think I have the 32gb Apple TV 4K (1st gen), but have probably not used half the storage. I don’t care for Apple Arcade because they’re still crappy mobile games at the end of the day and I have a PS5 and Nintendo Switch to play games on.

I’ve sent them Apple TV naming feedback via the website and by talking to support. I hope others have too.

Can somebody tell me the point of the Apple TV? Genuine question.

We have a smart TV and it's just simpler to use its own apps for things like Netflix or Amazon Prime, rather than mess around switching HDMI input and booting-up the Apple TV (which we do have, albeit an older one).

If I want to watch Apple TV shows then I do so on my phone, or MacBook.

Just about the only reason I've ever seen anybody use an Apple TV is for beaming photos onto the big TV screen. But that's not exactly an everyday thing.
We have a smart TV with all the same built in apps (minus Infuse which is Apple only) and I can't see how is simpler to use than the Apple TV. From my perspective, it actually takes longer to use the built in apps as I have to switch the TV on, press the home button and then press the apps button. Pressing the home button on the Apple TV switches the TV on and brings me to the apps interface so its actually quicker.

Everyone has differing requirements and some like myself rarely (if ever) watch live TV and 98% of what we do watch is on the Apple TV so its largely the only interface and control we need. The TV control only gets used to switch the TV off.

We have two 4k Firesticks on the bedroom and gym TV and its not even close in terms of the UI experience or the performance, I find myself tutting at the Firesticks every time I use them and curse myself for cheaping out and not just buying an ATV in the first place.

If you use your aerial or cable box etc to watch live TV 90% of the time and perhaps watch Netflix or Disney once in a while then I agree, an ATV is probably not for you purely based on cost. If however you use the ATV for virtually everything you watch on TV, combined with the Apple Ecosystem you have already bought into (ATV+, Fitness+, Photos etc) then its one of the best purchases you could make. Honestly couldn't see ourselves without it now.

Very much this. Probably 97% of what I watch is streamed through the Apple TV (outside of that streaming is some time spent playing games with the PS5). The only times I ever touch the TV’s own remote is for over-the-air TV, and I think in the last year that has amounted to (a) the Super Bowl, and (b) some first-run episodes of SNL. Other than that, the TV serves as intelligent monitor (intelligent simply in that it handles switching and displaying signals in a variety of formats from 2 HDMI ports and occasionally its own tuner). I use the Apple TV’s remote for basically all control of the TV (when I game, I’ll usually use it for adjusting volume - it does a remarkable job of using BT => HDMI-CEC when the ATV4K is on, or falling back to IR when it’s off). I’ve had a completely consistent interface for getting to the various streaming services and such across my last 3 TVs, because it’s always the Apple TV - I can’t be bothered to deal with each TV manufacturer’s “smart” interfaces.

I upgraded to the previous model ATV4K mostly for the new remote, and am quite happy with it. It’s, what, the 3rd or 4th model of ATV I’ve owned, and I’m happy to upgrade it because for under $200 each time they have brought noticeable improvements to my home theater - I’ve kept my iPhones, iPads, and Macs much, much longer. That said, I don’t see myself buying the newest Apple TV, because it doesn’t offer a substantial improvement to me.

Allow me to play Xbox's Game Pass and it's an insta-buy for me. Apple oh Apple, why do you always make it so hard for me to like your products?
Lovely design*, sleek interface, extended support, high resale value. BUT. Silly restrictions, awkward design*, mind-bogling line-up, and price points that make my kidneys tremble in fear. Such a conundrum.

* Form over function anyone?

The new Apple TV should have stared with a price point of $99 with 64GB of storage. What's up with the $129 price point! Seems out of place.
We really want to upgrade from our ATV 4K-1 and pass it on to the in-laws, they have nothing but trouble with Roku, but keep buying a new one every year…

I think we will see what Black Friday holds for deals on upgrading our Apple devices…

I passed my old Apple TV on to relatives who watch very little TV (as in the kids get to watch basically one movie and one nature documentary a week as a family thing, while the parents occasionally stream something after the kids are in bed), and they keep telling me, “you know, I didn’t think we use it much, but it’s what we use for practically everything we watch now”.

Those groups either have an iPad or or Phone. Most TV’s have AirPlay support and there are better options for those groups to casually game or even step up to advance games for a fraction of the cost and more capable compared to an AppleTV.
My daughter (9) has use of an old iPhone 7 of mine but doesn’t use it for games (basically it’s an iPod and camera for her). We have Arcade via Apple One and we play games on the AppleTV with a PS4 controller. She plays some on her own but we often like to play together. We also have an Xbox but it hasn’t been turned on for at least six months as we’ve found neither of us really have interest in “advanced” games and the whole user experience on the Xbox—e.g. buying games—is really poor.

I’m sure the market isn’t huge in the grand scheme of things but I would imagine there are a fair few families who want to play games and want fun, casual games, puzzles, etc with a decent quality level, no ads, no IAP, etc.

Regarding AirPlay, our TV is not connected to the network at all.

In the mean time I still cannot use Siri on my Apple TV in another language than the country where my Apple account is located (e.g. I live in The Netherlands (with a Dutch Apple ID) and have all my Apple devices set to English (US). Siri works flawlessly on all devices except the Apple TV because the Apple ID is Dutch and the language is not set to Dutch. In The Netherlands names of movies, shows etc are not translated, so have you ever tried to pronounce an English title like it's a Dutch word?

what apps even support HDR10+? Have to see if my TV supports it. (LG C8)
If not I'll stick with my current 4k.
I don't think the LG C8 supports HDR10+. Your LG C8 will however support Dolby Vision, which is a superior format, and which the Apple TV 4K already offered.

Would definitely suggest sticking with your current ATV.

It got a bit better in France, but it's basically the same. And don't get me started with the keyboard settings, it's a mess. Before if you selected qwerty (US) you had english suggestions. Now whatever keyboard layout you have (qwertz (CH), azerty (FR)) you get suggestions and corrections from all languages at the same time.
For so many features, Apple still thinks they're selling products to americans worldwide. It's exhausting.

Faster , lighter , cheaper

I call this a result !
Hi George.

Appreciate "faster" and "cheaper" are obviously beneficial.

However, am interested to know how "lighter" is a result? The device is not intended to be portable, and for most people it will sit in the same spot for years on end.

Left them feedback, yet again. Hopefully some day they'll see their errors.

HDR10+ is now supported within the native Apple TV+ app on Samsung TVs my 2019 QLED is playing my purchases and TV+ shows in HDR10+ rather than HDR10. No need to buy a new ATV will stick with my 2017 4k

So... in countries where Apple are forced to supply a cable, they supply a cable... but otherwise Apple's message to its customers is - get ****ed.

Put a replaceable battery in it, or include a cable so I can charge it. It's that simple, Apple.

Did they say anything about their audio output? The previous gen does not output Hi-Res audio and it's restricted to only 48bit.

For an Environmentally Conscience company that Apple is trying to market itself as, AppleTV is a wasteful product. Make it software based and license it to other tv manufacturers. Given that most tv’s come with GoogleTV/AndroidTV, Roku or WebOS built-in who is buying this wasteful device. Once iPhone goes USB-C people have the option of a HDMI connection.

thr processors in TVs are not even close to Apple Silicon in the Apple TV box.

the Apple TV doesn’t spy on you. doesnt throw ads at you. Doesn’t lag. is very well integrated, as you’d expect, with all your other Apple gear, including Air Pods (e.g., switching, spatial audio).

I have a smart tv. I have a high end Roku. I avoid both because neither even comes close.
