Ive said it from the start. Face ID sucks. It fails on me all the time even after several resets, I hate it. I want touch ID back.

I have 3 family members in my household who just never can get touchID to work properly. For the first reset it recognizes their prints but then like a day or two later it just fails every single time. It's almost as if the 3 people have bad fingers. None of their fingers work on touchID properly after setup a few days later.
Fair enough.

Only one face can be registered, and two people unlocked the device, on camera. No tricks. What else is there to understand about that. The mum and son are totally credible. The FaceID technology is flawed.

Only one face can be registered, two people unlocked the device. That shouldn't be possible. Their faces are completely different, she's got an oval head, he has a round head.
This doesn't mean they can' use passcode to train it. The ACTUAL STORY says it took them "tries" to unlock, specifically 6 tries on one of the FaceID unlock attempts.

They are also seemingly doing it immediately after registering a face, again making it less than a real world scenario.

Again, you're saying they are credible and the FaceID tech is flawed. Those are your opinions and not based on any facts or real world scenarios. This video doesn't even show the setup process...only shows that 2 related faces unlock the phone. Who cares.

When Face ID was first introduced as a feature on the X, I posted that I would not buy the X or use Face ID because I did not trust it. Took a lot of heat for making those comments. As time goes by and the phone is used by more people we are finding out the technology is not as secure as everyone WANTED it to be.

Now we are getting all kinds of excuses like "the phone was not trained properly", "the instances of this happening are rare and one in a million", etc. It's a great idea, but I just don't think it's as foolproof or secure as it should be.

It is as secure or more secure than Touch ID. Touch ID can be spoofed with some tape rubber gloves. The security level of a given security metric is how good is it at stopping people with out attempts to circumvent / hack the system with the knowledge of the user or theft of id of the user. If I have your print I have your phone the end. If I have your passcode I have your phone. I am not making excuses for Face ID but I want to make clear this is not a compromised security this is initial hacking while knowing the passcode so true security was over at that moment.

The more interesting security flaw is twins. This is a real security threat as it is fooled with out knowing the passcode or training attempts. If you have a twin face ID may be bad for you.

That is also in the white paper.

Read the security white paper it is about 7 or 8 pages long and it describes how Face ID works. The fact I can find exploits does not make it less or more secure.

As a devoted Apple user and lover of technology, I must say that Face ID isn't quite there yet. Close, but not there. I've done the trick to train it inside normally, and then outside in bright light at a slightly lower angle when going through the two rounds of setup. I've found that it's a lot faster and accurate for me when I have eye detection turned off. I often pick up my phone from my desk when I see a notification come in out of the corner of my eye, and picking up to swipe just isn't as natural as Touch ID. Before I could just hit the button on the desk and it would pop open. Now it wants me to pick it up, look at it from a certain angle and distance, and then fail half the time because I'm not holding it right.

Sometimes I wonder if it's a problem with my face. I have a dense beard and glasses. Every morning it refuses to unlock with my face, even this morning after I had turned off the eye detection requirement. It just seems a bit finicky. Maybe I need to set it up again. And like I said, it has been better in the last day since turning off eye detection. Otherwise this is the best phone I have ever used.

Also you should do yourself a favor and buy the Apple leather case. You're already spending $1000-1150 on a phone, so why not? It feels like a dream and I love the new colors they added. It feels very premium and upgraded over the first one I used on my 6 Plus, with color matched aluminum buttons with chamfered edges and a tighter fit.

Something along these lines was discussed on the latest ATP podcast.

The working theory was that if someone in a family has a similar enough facial structure/facial features to the person who originally set up Face ID and they know the passcode to unlock the phone, the system will capture that person's facial features when they successfully unlock the phone and then it will add information from those captures to the expanding "profile" of the original face because it thinks it's gathering additional datapoints from the face of the person who set up Face ID. However, it appears that the system is smart enough to disregard a face if it doesn't have commonality with the original person who set up Face ID.

My guess is that if it were possible to see the Face ID profile that's saved in this lady's phone, we would see a hybrid of her face and her son's face. He's unlocked the phone successfully with the passcode many times, I suspect; and because their faces are similar enough, the system has added aspects of his facial features to the expanding profile of who it will recognize. Now, if this woman's husband or significant other unlocked the phone with her passcode a hundred times, my assumption is that the system would disregard his face every time because it doesn't have enough in common with her face.

Based on the son "dabbing", the mother's gleeful expression and their shared glance at the end, this video seems incredibly scripted. Likely, this video was created solely as an attempt to go viral. "The first one's to trick FaceID." Seems like a giant crock of BS.

Easy to replicate

setup Face ID
make sure it works for you
now pass to sibling/child, it will fail to unlock.
have them hold the phone and put in passcode
now, they can unlock with Face ID.

The only caveat is that they have to at least somewhat resemble you so that the iPhone temporarily adds their face scan as additional data to the initial scan

This is detailed in the Face ID white paper.

I wanna know what people are doing to fail Face ID so much. I've only had my phone for a couple of days, but it hasn't failed to unlock on any occasion for me and I've used it indoors and outdoors, in the dark and light.

There is a clear resemblance between mom and the little one. But, the system should be far more precise. Again, first generation product with first generation problems. I hope they fix this...

By the way, I don't think the video is faked. I suspect we'll hear more stories like this one.

Yeah ok, FaceId need some chinks to be worked upon. There is also a freaking passcode. If you're so paranoid delete the faceid and set up a passcode. Sheesh, the gloom and doom all around because FaceId needs a software update perhaps is unbelievable. The funniest ones are ones who are trying to justify why they didn't buy the phone. Lmao..

Setup of moms Face ID is in question here.
There is a time where someone sets up the face and it doesn’t detect it fully, it leaves few or even 1/3 of the green lines off, asking you if you want to complete the process "as is". This is when similiar faces, parents or siblings can do the trick.
I’ve done it, and it’s exactly as it was shown here, but I rescaned my face completely, and opened it at least 10 Times, and it doesn't work on the other people that ware able to open it before.

Source: This kid wouldn't be able to access his mom's phone if it was secured with Touch ID.

Lol, negative. Wait until she goes asleep. :)

Unless attention is off, FaceID is more secure in this instance.

makes absolute sense. Typing in my 16 digit alphanumeric symbolized password while trying to checkout with apple pay at a register. Make as much as sense as paying $1k+ for a phone.
I didn't know typing out a password enabled the use of Apple Pay, I thought it required biometric ID. Either way, typing all that out would still be faster than most chip card readers I have encountered...

Can we get TouchID back?

Really Apple, I said this before, but all I want is an iPhone 8 with a 1080P OLED display.

Apple will put the finger print sensor under the screen next and tout it as an extra layer of security as you'll need to authenticate with both. And people will cheer. And champaign corks will pop. And some will wink and laugh.

That’s never going to happen. You can even quote me if you desire.

Nah I wouldn’t want to go backwards
