You guys are doing way too much to setup tethering only. Use my method. You do not need a Mac, in fact you should not be doing the ipcc file method because that is what is screwing up visual voice mail to cause you to need to fix it.

Simply installing the profile by emailing yourself the mobileconfig file will get tethering working.

The additional steps is his attempt to get MMS working which didn't completely work. If you want Tethering only, just use the mobileconfig. It's so much easier and less of a pain to deal install.

ok so just saw this at benm.at

"There are some problems with AT&T. Based on technical problems in the AT&T network (official no MMS Support yet) there can be no MMS Settings shown up in the iPhone Settings.

Im getting dozens of Feedback mails every minute. Ever mail will be read! More providers coming soon!"

maybe he's working on something... one can only hope!

My VMM stopped working and I do not get the Cellular Data settings.

I have a windows box and a mac.

On the Mac there is no file by that name but I did not do the upgrade on the Mac, I did it on my laptop, and there is no file like that on the laptop.

So I'm restoring it right now on the laptop to 3.0 with no restore. Then I'll restore it again on the Mac which will hopefully create that file. Then I'll do the upgrade, then restore the settings.

Hopefully when I go through the entire thing it'll work right.

edit....BTW I did just the mobileconfig file, by itself, emailed it and installed it. THAT broke my VMM, I didn't follow any other steps.

The thing is that some people want to get the MMS stuff even though it's not working... they can skip that process if they want...

Sure, but that's not clear here since this is a thread about 100% working tethering method which then lists a ton of extra steps that aren't needed and people get confused. This isn't a thread about MMS, and I'm trying to help clear it up for people that if you only want tethering, use the method I listed and it'll be easy and quick without any worries about VVM.

Sorry, it was your method that broke my voicemail. I unstalled it and rebooted and I have voicemail back.

do this,

1) Download the "mobilecongfig" its uploaded here. (DO NOT DOWNLOAD FROM THE benm.at SITE CAUSE SOMEONE MESSED IT UP OVER THERE)*

*download and unzip. then e-mail to self, open on Mail on iPhone, Install.

2) Did this according to Instructions (I believe it's mac only) http://9to5mac.com/iPhone-3G-tethering

3) At this point my VV wasn't working so tried the advice from a comment,

"EASY VOICEMAIL FIX! (restores original carrier settings)

Wed, 06/17/2009 - 11:29 — ben (not verified) 0 points
Ok heres how you fix your voice mail-
1. Connect the phone to itunes and option click restore
2. Navigate to your user name->Library->iTunes->iPhone Carrier Support
3. Select the file contained within "iPhone Carrier Support" and proceed
You now have your voicemail working again"

6) took out sim and put it back in while restarting the phone.

Theese Instructions are AT&T only! and is what worked for me. I'm pretty sure it will work for you Brian.

That's way more complicated than it needs to be. Just do this:

1) Download file
2) Remove .txt extension
3) E-mail the file to whatever e-mail you read on your iphone
4) Open mail and click on attached file to install
5) Ignore warning that pops up

Who here did this and did it work as advertised?

My apologies. I had read a ton of people using the older ipcc file method that was losing visual voice mail and had attributed it was related to that method of file installation because there are two methods right now to try to get tethering working. One is the ipcc and the other is the mobile config. I will edit the other post to include the VVM fix. Again, my apologies.

I can attest that Darknight's way works 100% and does NOT disable Visual Voicemail. I will be using this from now on.

However, they will probably charge us for the data even though we have unlimited data, just because we are tethering.

here are the pictures to prove!

My VVM works fine!

It's no problem, I appreciate your work on this. I did get tethering working very easily, so I'm disappointed it didn't work.

Brian

I'm doing the Mac restore now and will try the new method.

Of course I need to setup my Exchange first :)

I did this exact thing and it worked perfectly, however i have a question about step 2. You followed what 9to5 said which involves typing a terminal command on your computer then option-click restore and locating the file? I have a question, which file are you looking for, and how can i get my voicemail to work cuz i cant click that file in the carrier support folder.

Question... what ATT carrier file are you using? I had 5.0, but now back to 4.0. Curious because I see in your pics, as well as mine, there is no Cellular Data Network slider tab. I had this before. I still have tethering and MMS, tethering works, so does VVM.

I wonder if it's because I re-installed BenM.at's mobileconfig file after going back down to ATT_US.ipcc 4.0?

Are you confusing my method with the method in the OP? My method doesn't follow 9to5, nor does it need a Mac, iTunes, or a terminal command prompt.

That's why I'm trying to advocate my method over the complicated one in the OP. The OP lists too many steps that aren't needed to just enable tethering.

Just to confirm.

Using the mobile config file linked in here does not break VVM ?

If it does, is there a way to fix it inside windows? Id rather have tethering then VVM but both would be sweet.

Sorry, i should have spaced out my response, i did your method and got tethering to work just fine. My question was directed towards anyone that could help really. I cant get the Cellular Data Network menu to pop open. I did the whole config thing to get the tethering to work but i dont understand why i need tethering to work to get the MMS feature,

I think the ipcc file method also tries to enable the Cellular Data Network. It's kind of a two for one method since they've configured the ipcc file to enable both tethering and MMS and that file is being passed around now. So yes in order to try to get MMS, you'd have to go for the ipcc method which requires some additional hoops to jump through.

Any suggestions on getting voicemail back using your method?

Is it just coincidence that i leave myself a voicemail, it doesnt pop up, but when i restart my phone it pops up. Is this normal voicemail lag or is there something wrong.

I did the whole command into terminal and opened the file installed it, got tethering to work but never got the little camera picture next to the message.app, how is everyone getting that?

Love to know a method to get tethering free for 02. Not paying £15 to get 3GB... Any guides for us guys across the pond?
