Another observation, when I use the Accessibility button to navigate the phone, there are no issues. Going to Home Screen happens smoothly every time. Launching the app switcher also exhibits no issues.

I kept tracking this thread as I am experiencing the same issue with the animation stuttering when closing apps in my 12 pro.

It is happening less to me right now after going to Settings>General>Background App Refresh and disabling a bunch of apps that I am not using anyways. I only get it around 3-4 times a days now. I thought it is worth mentioning it here to see if it rectifies/reduces the issues in others.

I am not sure at this point if I need to return the phone and get a new one. I might try to set it up as new and download the apps one by one to see if there is a specific app that is causing it...

I have noticed the same stutter when closing apps issue on my 12 Pro. Hoping this will be fixed in a future software update.

I feel like we get things like this with every new phone, but... I’m noticing frequent stutters/hitches when closing apps. It seems happen when opening and closing an app that hadn’t been in the background, but not always. I’ve had the phone for 2 days now, so I’d hope that any slow performance due to background indexing or whatever would be done by now, but maybe not.

Update 11/16
Running iOS 14.2 on the 12 Pro, I've tried toggling a number of settings, but have experienced multiple stutters in each test:
- Bluetooth off
- Location Services off
- Airplane Mode on
- Handoff off
- Siri off
- Wallpaper Perspective Zoom off
- All widgets removed

Update 11/17
I've done a ton of testing, but have not found anything that eliminates the stutter. The consistent behavior is that if I open up enough apps to cross some threshold (like filling up the RAM), the stutter starts to occur.

I did a fresh install of iOS 14.2, setting up as new and not restoring from backup. I started just by opening and closing all the pre-installed apps, and saw no issue. Then I installed a bunch of new apps, opened and closed them, and started seeing the stutter. Then I deleted those apps and installed a bunch of different apps, opened and closed them, and saw the stutter again. So it seems to not be a question of *which* apps are installed.

I did another reinstall of 14.2, this time restoring from the encrypted backup. Opened and closed a couple dozen apps, and started to see the stutter.

Installed the iOS 14.3 public beta. Opened and closed a couple dozen apps, then started to see the stutter.

I've also chatted with Apple Support, but they didn't recommend trying anything I hadn't already done. They did a remote diagnostic, but didn't see any problems. Next step would be to have an Apple technician service it.

So I'm not sure what to make of all this. It certainly *feels* like a software problem, but the fact that a significant number of people say they don't have this problem makes it seem like a hardware issue. It's possible there's yet some setting I've missed which is causing this. Or maybe the people who don't have the problem just don't use the phone in the same way such that the memory (or whatever) gets filled up.

I'm kind of at a loss, and honestly a little upset I'm beyond the 14 day return window, because I don't really want to spend weeks having the phone shipped for service, or go to an Apple Store during the pandemic.
No video of the issue?

I have encountered this a few times. I've also noticed though that when it happens I did somewhat of an ambiguous swipe to close the app and it seems like it almost starts to bring up the app switcher at the same time as closing the app causing a bit of a stutter. Has anyone else noticed this?

had few stutters only.Got scared for a minute, i thought they were coming back but nop. everythings good. Still going strong without any trouble. Been weeks now.

Yes, I’ve noticed this as well.

Wow. Glad I found this thread. After a week or so of using my iPhone 12 Pro (restored from backup, not what I normally do), apps started hanging/lagging. RAM management seemed to be awful. Stuttering across different apps. This seems software related but iPhone 12 has it worst it seems, so maybe its not? Ugh, Apple needs to fix this ASAP. Their latest iPhone should be the phone with the least software problems IMO...

To be clear, at least for me, this is the only issue I'm having with my Pro Max. I have not seen any other issues and have been very happy with the phone overall.

I just playing around with the pro max in retail store unit bu opening and closing a bunch of apps but failed to see or produce this bug. Is this happening once we didnt restart the phone for too long or it will happen just random time ?

It random. Sometimes I can go a day with no stutter.

i don't know if by any case it can be attributed to any specific apps that haven't been optimised for iOS14.x yet...Yesterday it only happened like 2-3 times to me - today 5-6 so far. Not sure what might be causing it.

Has anyone returned the phone and got a new one and still have the problem?

This has been happening on my 11 pro max for several months and now my 12 pro max . Don’t think it’s hardware related .

Still happening on 14.3 public beta 3. Started seeing it again this morning after upgrading/rebooting yesterday afternoon.

Installed Beta 3 this morning. Seems fine so far but if history repeats itself it always seems fine the first 24hrs then back to stuttering. Stay tuned.

Just out of curiosity, is anyone experiencing this problem without a screen protector on? I'm wondering if that might affecting it since some 12 Mini owners were reporting problems with their lock screens when they were using both a screen protector and a case together.
I had some occasional stutters, and no screen protector whatsoever. However, I just realized I haven't seen a stutter in several days. Knock on wood.
