Has anyone had this problem resolved simply by getting a replacement 12 Pro/Pro Max? I’m just trying to figure out if it’s a software issue affecting all Pros and most people just don’t notice or if it’s just a small number of phones affected.

I don't know if it was on this thread, but I've definitely seen one or two people in other forums say they got a replacement device and the issue persisted.

Well, I feel stupid for not testing this before, but my XS has this exact same stutter when closing apps. Not sure if there’s some app or setting common between it and my 12 Pro.

Putting on my computer engineer hat, I dug a little deeper, plugging both phones into my Mac and using the Console app to watch the iOS log for errors. On both devices, there’s a pretty clear correlation between the stutter and error messages from a process called “RunningBoard”.

Googling tells me that RunningBoard has something to do with managing background apps, which roughly fits into my theory that the stutter happens when the memory is full and background apps are forced to exit.

So yeah, definitely seems to be a software issue.
That is exactly what i see is happening on my iPhone 12. After day or two of using it is becoming very sluggish. Every app has to reopen. My camera app is also crashing when i am forcing it to much. It looks like a very bad ram managament and like you said, managing background apps. I have also noticed simillar thing on my Xs, it is not that bad as Iphone 12 but i can clearly see that after some time overall ios performance becomes very bad.

Yeah, this is getting bad. It seems to worsen over time. It’s getting really frustrating. I read on some other forum that it may be a CPU scheduling issue. Memory management also seems a likely culprit as well. Let’s hope Apple can sort this out sooner than later.

What other forum, out of curiosity?

iOS 14.3 beta was flawless when it came to the stutter, but suddenly last night it came back without and updates or changes. It’s throwing me into recent apps randomly instead of just taking me home.

Unless I’m missing something, that post has nothing to do with this issue. That is to do with a single game (PUBG)...?
Yeah, seems more to be about performance issues with certain games or apps, and less what we're seeing here. Could be the same root cause, but I'd guess it has more to do with app optimization.

Yes, it’s about games and apps having performance issues on the iPhone 12. So this could totally be I related, but I am wondering if it could be the same root cause.

In any case I’m seeing the problem more and more as time goes on. The app tray seems to inadvertently trigger more often if my phone has been left unused for a long period of time. For example, after leaving it to charge overnight and then when I use it in the morning, it happens a lot more often in the first few minutes of use.

I've been using 14.3 Beta 2 and it's not as bad as 14.2 but pops up every so often. Whenever I try to screen record it so that I can report it in the feedback app it never happens anymore even if it just happened. So annoying. Really hoping for a fix soon. Anyone else using the Beta? Please make sure you are recording and reporting it in the feedback app.

I had the beta for a little while but it was doing the same thing. I rolled back to 14.2.1 and it seemed ok for a bit but then it started to happen again after a few days.

That seems to be the trend. Works fine for about 24 hrs then back to the same thing. I was on 14.2.1 as well before adding the beta version. 12 Pro Max btw.

Same here. Usually my phone works just fine in evening, but after a night when phone is not used everything feels so slow, especially my camera. And also i did the same thing with updating to 14.3 beta, it was fine for 2 days then everything started to work as bad as before, i came back to 14.2.1, after one day same symptoms, in my case my camera starts to work veeeeery slow, every app has to reload after closing it etc.

Oh thank goodness I saw this. I thought I was nuts. Fb is the app that does this the most to me on 12 pro max. So frustrating.

Just out of curiosity, is anyone experiencing this problem without a screen protector on? I'm wondering if that might affecting it since some 12 Mini owners were reporting problems with their lock screens when they were using both a screen protector and a case together.

Yeah been using phone case and screen protector free since launch. Posted a video of it happening earlier in the thread

It seems it stops for a while after you restart, and then starts again with increasing frequency over time. I wonder, is Apple aware of it?

No screen protector on mine either.
