I'm 90% sure it's background app refrash, at least for me...

I turned it off and all lags are gone.

Running 14.3 rc 2 on my 12 pro max 512.

For who tried to turn the background refresh off and didn't work, maybe u need to install 14.3 rc 2 first.

So iOS 14.3 rc 2+Background app refresh off.

Interestingly, I didn’t have this issue until 14.3. Stutters are bad and very noticeable. The newest phones should not be acting like this. Clearly a software problem. iPhone 12, best CPU, worst performance. Very frustrating and sad for such expensive devices.

What makes me stop short of saying that it’s 100% a software issue is that when I use the Assistive Touch option on the iPhone to go home or launch the app switcher, it does so without any issue. It works every time. Which leads me to think there may be something going on with the phone registering the correct touch gestures.

That could very well be 100% a software bug. Like I’ve said before I think there’s some buggy logic in whether it brings up the app switcher or closes the app. I’ve only noticed a stutter if I do an ambiguous swipe.

I bit the bullet and did a factory reset on my phone and set it up as a brand new phone without restoring it from backup. Everything synced from iCloud but going through each app, signing in, and changing all my settings back to what it was is very annoying and took almost 4 hrs. If that doesn't work I'm going to get a replacement. Stayed tuned. One positive I learned from all of this is how to download my entire Apple Music library with one click seeing as how Apple still doesn't have a download all button which is silly. For those who don't know, you simply create a smart playlist on your Apple Music account on your mac (not sure how it works on PC) and tell it to add all songs that are longer than 0 seconds then you just download the playlist on your phone. Auto Updates as well. Sorry to get off topic but thought that might be helpful to others.

Please let us know if the stutters return. I’m thinking about doing this but only if it would fix. A lot of work.

Welp, that was a waste of time and 4 hrs of my life that I’ll never get back. There were some slight stutters after setup but that’s normal with things still processing in the background. It’s now 8 hrs later and the issue still exist on my 12 Pro Max. All Music, Messages and Photos are downloaded and all apps are 100% setup so I know nothing is processing. I also did a hard reset to clear cache etc. This is very annoying/frustrating. Next step is to get a replacement. Already have it reserved so I have to now do another Genius Bar appointment. This has been my second worst experience with iOS and what’s driving me crazy is that fact that it doesn’t affect everyone. I reached out to Jon Rettinger and Aaron Zollo on Twitter who are both popular YouTubers that use iOS, Zollo actually reviews every build including betas, and both responded saying they haven’t experienced the issue. So frustrating.

For the love of God, it’s a software issue!

This is getting boring now... stutters have increased in frequency for me on 14.3. We’re still there on the last version but had reduced so felt like the problem was being ironed out but worse than ever again now

Also look at Zollotechs latest 14.3 video and it happens at 6:02 when he swipes up from the camera app. Hardware replacements won’t solve your issue. It’s a software issue.

I’ve got to ask, for those of you who are suffering from this, you have reported it to Apple directly haven’t you? There’s no point in bleating on here ad nauseam… It will achieve nothing

I get that you are frustrated with it, and in my opinion it’s further evidence that Apple software is getting worse and worse, but these things need raising directly.

Heh, that’s a good catch. First time I’ve seen it captured in one of these videos.

And yeah, if it were a hardware problem, it wouldn’t be happening (in my experience) on an iPhone XS, 12 Pro, and 12 Mini, all of which were set up as new devices with iOS 14. I can’t really explain why some people don’t see it at all. Personally I’m seeing it less recently, so I think it just has to do with how people are using it.

Please let us know how the hardware replacement goes.

I have the same stutter issue and do you guys have the problem where it gets really laggy when the screen brightness is higher than 50%, it will be really laggy. And my iPhone 12 has another issue that it will have a pop sound whenever I type or lock the screen as the volume got suddenly raise up.

do you use any of these apps? (My only apps with background activity on since its essential):

Google Photos
Outlook
Whatsapp (essential for night backup since iOS 14.1 🙄)

Anyone here facing the problem of stuttering, you can try to disable follow focus option under accessibility—>zoom setting. It makes my phone feel much smoother not sure whether this could help but i see significant improvement

Do you actually use Zoom in some capacity? Seems like changing a setting there would mainly make a difference if the Zoom functionality is actually being used.
