Understanding software development, they’ve probably slated to fix this in a future release after some other things they consider higher priority. Especially since you can see it easily on any device.

Of course, DONE!
I sent them also the screen recording i made in which the problem is crystal clear....
they are calling me back on saturday..... I won't let them overcome on this problem with just words!
I’ve had an open support case with them on this for months now. I sent them a recording also as well as let them capture a bunch of device logs. Here’s what they will tell you. They’ll say they are aware of the problem and they have engineers looking into it and to make sure to install all future updates. I told them I’ve been having this issue for over a year now and installed all the iOS 13 updates with no luck, so I’m not holding my breath for a fix any time soon. They apologized and said they know it’s frustrating but there’s nothing more they can do right now.

Well, guys there's one thing i've tried, maybe could be analyzed also by you...please let me know.
I've noticed that the problem of the multitasking simply DISAPPEAR by using the phone in normal mode.
I got the multitasking problem ONLY if i use the phone in ZOOM mode. Please try to use the phone in normal mode and let me know if it works for you too. MAybe the gesture is not optimized for the 6,7 inch screen.
Some lags in the closing app animation will still be there, but not as frustrating as the multitasking problem.
Please try to use it in normal mode and let me know. All the friends which told me they have no problem are using the phone in normal mode. Let me know if it works for you.

Yes, I still have some stuttering problem while closing apps (but less than before) but got NO MORE multitasking problem. I am using since yesterday and it never happens while in zoom mode it happened more than 1/5.

Same thing here. iPhone 12 Pro Max on iOS 14.3.

more often than not when I swipe up I get the app switcher.

extremely annoying is mildly put...

Ok guys i think i understand what's happening... I inizialized (again) the phone with itunes. but instead of configuring it as new with my apple account, i tried by CREATING A NEW APPLE ACCOUNT. Well i am testing it, I installed many many apps and everything seems to work fine. Maybe there is some "complication" coming from your account (even if you configure it as new) which is brought out on the new phone. That could explain why some people have the problem with previous models such as iphone 11. The (big) problem is that i have many photo in the cloud, i have to save them manually (almost all my life) and also i have sone subscribes made with the previous account that i have to bring in some way to the new account. Anyway, i will let you know i'll be testing the phone in these days but i think it could be a "solution" or, at least, an explanation....
sorry for my english, I hope
it was clear.

This will not work for long. My advice: stop trying to fix something that only Apple can; you’re just setting yourself up for more disappointment!

And your English is fine

Maybe you're right...but...why the majority of people doesn't experience this problem? I am supposed to be called back by apple support on saturday. I will firmly ask for a swap unit! Maybe the problem is related to some defective ram or something else. I will ask for a genius in an apple store for a swap unit and I won't exit until it will stop this s***!!!

Good luck. It’s not a hardware problem. You’re only going to be wasting your own time and driving yourself crazy resetting up your phone time and time again.

I think the majority just aren’t bothered by the problem. They likely see it, but are swiping up to go to the home screen as they’re putting their phone away OR are so interested in getting to the next app that any stutter just doesn’t register. It hasn’t been fixed because it’s low priority and it’s low priority because there are other more visible issues they’re likely working on first.

I've only ever used standard mode and I experience the issue very frequently.

I think this is likely the reality. When I first started experiencing it I would just swipe up again. Then after a while I started wondering why the swipe gesture was failing so often and then it started bothering me.

Or maybe they are not heavy users, they don't use too many apps in the same time

I'm just not seeing it on my 12 Pro Max and I've been watching for it since I got the phone 3 weeks ago. I watched the video posted back on the first page and clearly see the issue. But I use my phone a lot, opening and closing lots of apps. I'm not anal but I'm a retired S/W Systems Engineer (started 49 years ago) with a lot of UI development experience so I'm not blind to these issues.

FWIW, I'm still convinced this is an issue with ambiguous swipes. The only times I've seen this is when I did kind of a curved swipe and it seems to get confused as to whether to close the app or bring up the app switcher. If I do a clean straight swipe I cannot reproduce it. Or it's a combination of ambiguous swipes and a slightly bugged algorithm of whether to close the app or bring up the app switcher.

I’ve noticed this issue occurring most often when I load up an app and close it right away. It will hang when I swipe up during the initial load. It’s usually an app I haven’t opened in a while but still in the app switcher. In other words I haven’t closed it out, but it likely wasn’t stored in RAM any longer and needed to reload upon launching.

I also would like to add that I’ve been using gestures as accurately and carefully as possible, yet I’m still experiencing this issue.

I feel like we get things like this with every new phone, but... I’m noticing frequent stutters/hitches when closing apps. It seems happen when opening and closing an app that hadn’t been in the background, but not always. I’ve had the phone for 2 days now, so I’d hope that any slow performance due to background indexing or whatever would be done by now, but maybe not.

Update 11/16
Running iOS 14.2 on the 12 Pro, I've tried toggling a number of settings, but have experienced multiple stutters in each test:
- Bluetooth off
- Location Services off
- Airplane Mode on
- Handoff off
- Siri off
- Wallpaper Perspective Zoom off
- All widgets removed

Update 11/17
I've done a ton of testing, but have not found anything that eliminates the stutter. The consistent behavior is that if I open up enough apps to cross some threshold (like filling up the RAM), the stutter starts to occur.

I did a fresh install of iOS 14.2, setting up as new and not restoring from backup. I started just by opening and closing all the pre-installed apps, and saw no issue. Then I installed a bunch of new apps, opened and closed them, and started seeing the stutter. Then I deleted those apps and installed a bunch of different apps, opened and closed them, and saw the stutter again. So it seems to not be a question of *which* apps are installed.

I did another reinstall of 14.2, this time restoring from the encrypted backup. Opened and closed a couple dozen apps, and started to see the stutter.

Installed the iOS 14.3 public beta. Opened and closed a couple dozen apps, then started to see the stutter.

I've also chatted with Apple Support, but they didn't recommend trying anything I hadn't already done. They did a remote diagnostic, but didn't see any problems. Next step would be to have an Apple technician service it.

So I'm not sure what to make of all this. It certainly *feels* like a software problem, but the fact that a significant number of people say they don't have this problem makes it seem like a hardware issue. It's possible there's yet some setting I've missed which is causing this. Or maybe the people who don't have the problem just don't use the phone in the same way such that the memory (or whatever) gets filled up.

I'm kind of at a loss, and honestly a little upset I'm beyond the 14 day return window, because I don't really want to spend weeks having the phone shipped for service, or go to an Apple Store during the pandemic.
If it’s driving you this insane you can always go into Settings-Accessibility-Motion and enable the “Reduce Motion” option.
Obviously changes the way the UI changes but it will get rid of that stutter when swiping between apps & the Home Screen.

At this point I’m honestly considering swapping out my iPhone with an Android phone temporarily. The stutter is absolutely infuriating. It sucks because it wasn’t there on my iPhone 11.

If it’s that bad for you, I’m assuming you’ve reported it to Apple, via a phone call I mean?

I have a feeling this is going to be yet another bug that’s going to go on for months and months and months. There is no denying their quality has dropped massively.

I thought this as well back in 2019 regarding the animation stutter that appeared on the XS, XS Max and XR. It still hasn't been fixed, I can observe it clearly and easily on my XR and I observed that exact same stutter in the iPhone 12 Pro Max at the store.

My advice for anyone who is bothered by this is to activate Reduce Motion and forget about it. Apple won't fix it. Back in 2018 this gained traction because the premium models were stuttering and there were articles about it. So Apple can't be unaware of the issue, they know it's there, it's just that a) they don't know how to fix it or b) they know how to fix it, but won't because it probably requires more effort than they want to put in.

The thing that tells me they absolutely won't fix this is the fact I was able to see this in the iPhone 12 Pro Max almost immediately at the store. If the latest and greatest model has this, what hopes does my XR have?

Reduce Motion on, good job Apple.

Oh and a disclaimer: what I said applies to the well-known animation stutter / frame rate drop that has been present since 2018. This may or may not be the same thing as the stutter that brings up the app switcher. What I wrote applies in general to the stutters seen in iOS these days because it's been here too long for me to think it will get fixed. As a side note, my dad's iPhone 6 doesn't have animation stutters. When I saw this, I quickly stopped hoping for a fix.

I've used the feedback method.
