Well quick update:
It’s been what, two days now since I’ve taken the silicon case off and no stutter at all. I’m watching it like a hawk expecting a stutter but non happened. Bizarre

now the problem is I need to work tomorrow and need to use a case lol.
what if I put the case on, stutter comes back and when I take it off it stays.
Ordered Lew’s carbon case but who knows when it will get here

Anything else you might've changed that'd coincidentally affect it? Changed settings, or apps installed or removed?

I've done a ton of testing, but have not found anything that eliminates the stutter. The consistent behavior is that if I open up enough apps to cross some threshold (like filling up the RAM), the stutter starts to occur.

I did a fresh install of iOS 14.2, setting up as new and not restoring from backup. I started just by opening and closing all the pre-installed apps, and saw no issue. Then I installed a bunch of new apps, opened and closed them, and started seeing the stutter. Then I deleted those apps and installed a bunch of different apps, opened and closed them, and saw the stutter again. So it seems to not be a question of *which* apps are installed.

I did another reinstall of 14.2, this time restoring from the encrypted backup. Opened and closed a couple dozen apps, and started to see the stutter.

Installed the iOS 14.3 public beta. Opened and closed a couple dozen apps, then started to see the stutter.

I've also chatted with Apple Support, but they didn't recommend trying anything I hadn't already done. They did a remote diagnostic, but didn't see any problems. Next step would be to have an Apple technician service it.

So I'm not sure what to make of all this. It certainly *feels* like a software problem, but the fact that a significant number of people say they don't have this problem makes it seem like a hardware issue. It's possible there's yet some setting I've missed which is causing this. Or maybe the people who don't have the problem just don't use the phone in the same way such that the memory (or whatever) gets filled up.

I'm kind of at a loss, and honestly a little upset I'm beyond the 14 day return window, because I don't really want to spend weeks having the phone shipped for service, or go to an Apple Store during the pandemic.

Updated the first post with a bunch of new info.

iPhone leather case and 12 pro max since Friday and in 5 days I maybe have seen it 2-3 times and I’m a heavy user. With the 12 pro it’s was 100s of times. Not sure why the difference.

That’s the thing. I changed nothing. Because someone else took the case of, i decided to try it too so I knew not to touch anything or change anything. Everything stayed the same.
most likely I’ll put the case tomorrow. So we’ll see what happens.

Do any of y'all w/ stutter have screen protectors? I know those are causing issues on the mini
I have a screen protector. Put it on when I had a stutter and continued having it. Now with screen protector on and no stutter. It didn’t make a difference for me

Yo he quitado el problema activando "reducir movimiento" dentro de accesibilidad en ajustes. Entiendo que es un problema de la animación del cierre Apps en iOS 14 en los iPhone 12 Pro...

English: I have removed the problem by activating "reduce movement" within accessibility in settings. I understand that it is a problem of the animation of the closing Apps in iOS 14 in the iPhone 12 Pro ..

Wanted to add to this thread because I have been experiencing the same thing. I have the 512GB Graphite 12 Pro Max with the green Apple Silicon case and Spigen tempered glass screen protector. Adding all that information because I know that some are pointing out that the case and screen protector have possibly impacted their device. I got my device on launch day and it was buttery smooth for the first two days then I started noticing the stutters when going to the app switcher or swiping up to exit an app. Seems to happen mostly when I'm listening to Apple Music or Pandora via Bluetooth with my Airpods Pro or Bluetooth speaker. Also noticed keyboard lag as well around the same time. Hopefully, Apple resolves this quickly because it's super disappointing considering the device is only 5 days old. My 11 Pro Max battery drained more once I upgraded to ios 14 but never stuttered.

Interesting. These things would make me think the problem is related to heat, in that the bigger Max or a phone without a case would dissipate heat better. It doesn’t really line up with when I’ve seen the stutter, but something I’ll keep an eye out for.

I’ve tried this too. It “fixes” the problem in that there’s no app-closing animation to see a stutter in. But the other symptom of this problem remained, in that sometimes I’d try to close an app but it’d open the app switcher instead.

Still getting the stutter on 14.3 public beta 2 on the 12 Pro.
Damn. If this continues on in 14.3 it would be annoying.

I have the Apple silicon case and wallet. I’ve since used the phone in all combinations with the two, and it still stutters (yes, even without the case).
I do not use screen protectors btw.

Update from me...I’ve been running 14.3 beta 2 since yesterday afternoon and I’ve not seen the stutter since. Keeping fingers crossed!
When I first installed 14.2 it took a good day-plus of usage to see it again, so for me at least it seems to depend on usage load. If I go out of my way to fill up memory (or whatever), I can make the stutter appear by opening apps in succession for about 5 minutes after a reboot.

(I even submitted a 5+ minute screen recording of doing this with my beta Feedback. I’m sure they love me.)

Yea it’s just weird it doesn’t happen to my max near is much as my 12 pro. I see it 2-3 times a day on my max I’ve had since fri and saw it maybe 50x a day on my pro 12.

That’s interesting. Definitely hoping a fix comes soon!
