To my eyes this looks almost like for a split second iOS thinks that I’m invoking multitasking when I’m closing all. It’s very odd. I wonder if the stutter has anything to do with the taller screens and the interface not being perfectly optimized for the gestures.
The 12 series screens are not taller than 11/XS/X. They all do have the exact same aspect ratio (19.5:9).

I've had this thought too, wondering if it could be at all related to the unresponsive screen on the 12 Mini. Like, some shared issue where the phone isn't responding to touch inputs like it should.

Guys, how is it possible that apple specialized websites are not aware of this issue? Maybe an article of this problem can be important in terms of visibility and apple will start doing something for us!
It would be nice to get some sort of engagement from Apple engineers too, but they are insulated by so many layers of reboot-the-modem level of support that that's almost impossible. That's part of why I went to the 14.3 beta, too, on the hope that submitting this issue through the Feedback app it would actually reach someone useful.

The problem is, going by this poll that failed to gain much traction, a lot of people aren't experiencing this problem. Across all the various forums I've searched, there are probably less than 100 people who've complained about this, so we're very much the vocal minority. Maybe that means it's actually a hardware issue we're all experiencing? Maybe some magic mix of apps and configuration is causing it for us? Maybe the people who aren't having the issue aren't using their phones the same way, or they simply have it and don't notice or care?

Quick update from me.
Been back with silicone case for few days and sadly I have to say silicone case made no difference.
What was that fixed the stutter? I got no clue.
the stutter is gone with or without the case so far. Been 5 days with zero stutter
Will keep you posted if it comes back

Its so strange. i get it a couple of times a day on my Max. Was 50x more on my 12 Po non Max. Id love to know the culprit.

True. But they do have the same aspect ratio as the other screen sizes. Size is not aspect ratio. And you stated the new screens have gotten taller and that is simply not the case. ;)
Yeah, I was thinking more in terms of gestures and how they take into account the different reach capabilities on the new sizes. It makes more sense in my head 😂🤣.

The mini touch issue is so interesting... with the clear case I have on there, I have no issue unlocking the screen if I use my index finger, but almost every time I use my thumb it fails to register. I strongly doubt that it's a hardware issue.

my Siri went full screen for what ever reason. I’m not familiar with iOS so I went on YouTube to learn how to turn it back to the circle thingy. That was all I’ve changed. Phone has been the same from day one with same apps and options.
Side not note. Now my good experience with this phone is greatly compromised because every app I close I keep looking and waiting for the damn stutter to show up. I can’t help it.

Interesting. I've been trying to check the Analytics logs to see if anything stands out when I experience a stutter, and something related to Siri was one thing I noticed. Totally disabling Siri is one of the myriad tests I tried, though, which didn't help.

I doubt Apple will fix this. Not saying this to discourage anyone, it's just that this has happened on the XS and XR. I have the XR, the stuttering is the same as it was in 2019. The most fluid it felt on the last iteration of iOS 13 that I was on before updating to iOS 14. Then on iOS 14.0.1. I think it was, the stutters were the worst. Every time I see an update is available, my first thought is "maybe this fixes the stutters." It's the only issue I have with this phone and I think it's software related. There's something in iOS in combination with other options that triggers it, which is why some people are seeing it and others are not, because who knows all sorts of various combinations you could set your software preferences to. That's what it seems to me, anyway. If it were a hardware issue, you wouldn't see an improvement going from one iOS version to the other.

This new 14.2.1 seems to be a lot better, now I’m using it for two hours and no stuttering... also the touchscreen seems to be more responsive and buttery smooth... finger crossed! I will update you tomorrow for sure!

Upgraded to 14.2.1 about an hour ago and so far so good. Keyboard lag and Stutter are gone so hopefully it stays that way so stay tuned.

I haven’t seen a stutter on my 12PM since updating to 14.2.1. Buttery smooth here.

I really think this is fixed. I can’t make it stutter. It’s very snappy. Time will tell but I feel good about it.

It’s not fixed on my iPhone 12 Pro 512GB with 14.2.1. It feels a little better, but the stutter is still there when I swipe to go home. It hangs, but I haven’t seen it go into the app switcher yet. Hopefully, Apple is on it and will provide a fix soon.
