Buy a console for gaming

When every game has a console port - sure. Until then, I'll need a laptop that can game as well.

I do most of my gaming on my Xbox 360 but some I still need to do on my rMBP.

----------

Why? Apple has been taking more and more control over the design of their chips. Look at the A6, it has incredible graphics processing capabilities. Would it be a stretch to think that they can't build really powerful integrated graphics into their laptops now? Eventually, we'll see Apple-designed processors powering our laptops and the rest of the computer industry won't be able to match the capabilities of a Mac :dreaming:.

They don't design x86 chips.

Just give me a 13" Retina Air, FFS.

What would be the difference between these new retina models and a retina air?

If this model doesn't include a discrete GPU, less powerful components are out of the question. You have to be able to actually use that retina display. The only thing Apple could do to shrink the case any more would be to shrink the battery. That's unacceptable for the Air.

The air line made sense when the other models included optical drives and spinning HDD platters. Once the retina models become standard, they'll only be able to keep their form factor difference if they don't upgrade to retina screens and use that to drive the machine even smaller. In essence, these new retina machines are 'Air Pro's - the only way the MBA can survive is by becoming the new base MacBook.

If you want a retina MBA, my guess is that this 13" model will be what you're after - the thinnest 13" retina display laptop Apple know how to build. They're not saving the smallest and lightest components for the Air anymore.

The 15" rMPB has 2 GPUs one of which is an Intel 4000, and it's running a screen higher in resolution than the one in the coming soon 13" rMBP. AND it can run at least another display outside.

Retina with integration?

Are integrated graphic cards really that good?
If so, why does Apple offer them in other products?

Sure you can do lovely things with MBA.
What about GPU acceleration when converting video? 3D Animation?
And more resolution, to begin with?

Making a Retina computer without dedicated graphic cards makes me wonder what kind of magic will be behind the scenes for GPU itself and its possibilities in boosting CPU power...

They surely know something I don't.
Or this will be just another scratch in my already very narrow list of options.

These are not "rumors" but rather leaks. This site is not called MacLeaks now is it?

I think a number of people have a problem with these persistent leaks with actual photos of parts. That is a serious problem and if the manufacturer was located in the US, somebody would be investigated for insider trading or misappropriation. Because the manufacturer is located in China, the SEC cannot prosecute or investigate the leakers. If, however, someone at Apple were to leak insider information about future products, they could be charged under SEC regulations and fined or imprisoned.

I don't think nobody wants to see people go to jail.

I miss this site when we had unsubstantiated rumors and speculation with very few actual leaked parts to go on. All of these leaks take some of the fun out of the keynotes.

I think it would be silly to think that a site that focuses on future products would not post leaked material about said products if given the opportunity. Whether or not posting such material is ethical is another story.

Apple's suppliers have been dropping the ball. I don't want to know about the product before Apple announces it. Somebody fix this.

who the hell cares. In a couple months will it really ****** matter whether you knew about it a week in advance?

Seriously, get a life.

I'm curious about this battery design and what exactly that means for the consumer. Also how they are planning on powering that high-resolution screen.

I know that the majority of leaks/rumors/whatever suggest iPad Mini as being non-retina. I wonder though if this will be a more retina-heavy presentation and there being at least an option for retina iPad Mini? We all know they're pushing in that direction anyhow.

For that matter, the 11" air isn't exactly markedly different in size from the current iPad so why couldn't the whole lineup be revamped? There'd be plenty of incentive for this with holiday season coming.

re: no discrete video

Yep, I already consider this a letdown.

Honestly, the single biggest problem with the 15" retina MBPro is that the video card isn't powerful enough to push around that many pixels without performance bottlenecks. It's good enough for your basic use cases, obviously, but not that impressive for a system costing so much. (Your 3D gamers sure won't be impressed by the frame rates.)

It's a forgivable problem only because there really weren't any mobile GPUs available capable of doing the job .... but it's all the more reason not to further gimp a 13" retina MBPro by leaving the discrete video out completely!

I know Apple probably thinks, "Who needs it if the 13" display has fewer pixels?", but we're starting out from a situation where graphics performance is one of the weakest parts of the system as a whole.

Not having discrete graphics could be a letdown.

I know exactly what the previous poster felt like, and the difference between rumors and leaks. There used to always be room for surprises - and plenty of actual hardware surprises at Apple product unveilings. MacRumors made us suspect the class of product being unveiled, but all the details blew us away during the unveiling. Now, by the time of unveiling, we've already seen a full tear down of the hardware. First time I remember this total lack of surprise was the iPhone4 Retina display being leaked.

Sure, we could not read MacRumors, but they now even repost the leaks in all the major news outlets. The only "surprise" typically left is that, no, the device you already know about isn't going to released until next year. Sorry.

:)

I understand there's a difference between the old rumours and the new ones (I've been following this site since 2004). But there's a really simple solution if you don't like the new leaks: don't follow this site! What is the point of complaining about it on a rumours site? Covering the rumors/leaks is the raison d'etre of this site! If you find them on major news sites, complain there

When I'm on an airplane or at a coffee shop, it's nice to be able to dial up a game or two.

In neither of those locations would a consol be very practical.

Exactly. Moreover, you'd think that Apple wants you to game on your Mac. After all, they really are touting that Game Center thing.

Next up, game on your phone or tablet.

Exactly! these moroooons who keep saying 'buy a console for gaming' need to realize some of use like to game on whatever device we have. It wouldn't be all that hard for Apple to make a version of the 13'' MBP with a dedicated GPU, thereby giving those of us who would like to game on it the option of paying al little more for that luxary.

Set the resolution to non-Retina when gaming. 1280x800 will look unblurred and fine since it'll be running at a pixel perfect 1 per 4 of the native panel's resolution.

There is a huge overlap between "rumors" and "leaks". Maybe you should right objective guidelines on how to make the differentiation and submit to the site. Please make it public as it will be a very interesting paper!

Anyway, it's not like part leaks are new of this year. There's been "part leaks" story for years in the week before the keynotes announcing new hardware.

With bigger batteries that use the space left by the optical drive.

Well, I imagine they're going to have to cram in a discrete GPU to keep everything running at a reasonable frame rate. And I don't see how they could increase the battery size, add a GPU, and reduce the footprint, though Apple's engineering team has left me WOW'ed on more than one occasion.

The HD 4000 running at 1300 mhz can push out 3.9 gpixels/sec. The 2560x1600 display is 4 mpixels big. Even pushing out 60 FPS, you could do 15 pass-rendering... but we're not exactly talking about a 3D game here where such multiple passes over the entire screen are necessary.

I have a Mini Server I use as my main, till they come out with a new Mac Pro

I also have a Air

I would love to have a discrete graphics so I run both my dell Monitors, and push FCPX better. So I could kill two birds with one stone

Apple is selling plenty of the machines, all at a very nice profit margin. They know that if they used more expensive graphics, they would be unlikely to sell many more laptops, but they would be certain to have higher production costs.

There are very, very few Apple customers who absolutely, positively cannot live another day without the most expensive graphics chip in the entire world. The vast majority of the addressable market, and an even higher proportion of Apple customers like the machines just fine as they are.

Lowering profit margins for the benefit of a tiny segment of the population makes no sense at all for Apple.
