This is great news, especially if Apple plans to brand the aluminum Macbook as a Pro model.....BUT...until I see it for myself I highly doubt the upgraded screen is as good or better than the Macbook Air. The Air's screen is a tad better than the MBP, IMO.

if it took 2 months to notice...i say ho hum to this upgrade...it dont matter....you dont notice it day to day.

If the new mb screens are the same as the MBA screens, that that is a significantly noticeable difference. Just cmapre thr MB and MBA at any apple store!

What's really baffling is that at the time of writing this about a third of the votes on the story are negative. Maybe it's just angry old screen MB users downvoting :p

Ha ha, many of the MR forum members are weirdos anyway. If Apple announced free Macbooks to everybody who asks for one there would be negatives voted on the forum. I love this forum but the pessimists and unnecessary rudeness of many of the MR members makes me ill.

Ah yes, MacRumors. Where you can express your opinion and expect to get an extraordinarily snotty response such as this one.

How about respecting someone else's viewpoint and reducing your attitude?

Not only that but the poster is completely incorrect.

The original white MB screens were horrid! Low contrast, poor color saturation, and extremely tight viewing angles.

The new unibody screens are LED backlit, brighter, better color saturation, much better contrast, and wider viewing angles with less artifacts.

He is only comparing the new glossy finish to the old matte finish and assuming the screen is better.

I know there is a running complaint about the new glossy finish but it is still obvious that the new led backlit displays are far superior to the old white MB displays.

This is interesting. i bought a 2.0 Alu Macbook about 3 days after launch from an Apple retail store, I was always disappointed with the display, viewing angle wasnt very good, and compared to my old and sold 2.4 Macbook Pro it really was rubbish.

The Macbook got sold just after christmas, however after selling I missed having a laptop and so in the middle of april bought the 2.4 Alu Macbook again from the same retail store in cambridge. From the moment I started using it I knew the screen was better and am pleased to see this one has the 9CA5 screen and it really is in a different league, colours are better and the viewing angle much improved, very pleased with my AluMacbook.

Oh yeah and I love the glossy displays now, long live the gloss!

Haha... I was an early adopter. Bought the 13" Unibody Macbook in October when it first released and was prepared to face something like this. Kinda stinks that the bad part was poor quality screens. I could have dealt with a faulty chips that dies after three months and is replaceable with Applecare, as opposed to a cruddy screen that I now have to live with until I get a new computer.

Oh well, I am used to it now. Pic backgrounds that minimize the gradient effect and never watch movies full screen (I rarely watch movies anyways).

C'est la vie.

This stinks! I bought my Macbook online as part of the "Black Friday" promo, so I never got to see the screen prior to purchase. I use (used currently going for a HDD repair!!) my Mac all the time for movies, and watching films that are largely black is horrendous (Dark Knight etc.)

In their original video Apple promoed this machine as being specifically suitable for watching films - showcasing Iron Man if I recall.

About a month or so after purchase it was bugging me so much I even went to Apple Store Bluewater to ask if something was wrong with the screen. I was initially told that the Macbook had exactly the same QUALITY screen as the MacPros. I told the Apple rep that one of key marketing statements concerning the new 17" MacBook Pro was that it had the highest colour gamut of any notebook display - therefore there could not be parity in quality. Eventually he admitted I was probably right.

Needless to say I asked if I could upgrade to a MacBook Pro 15" (Paying additional difference in cost) as I never would have purchased the 13" with this screen - it ruins the entire experience of an otherwise exceptional computer.

I was told this was not possible... so until I can buy a pro next time, I'm stuck with a MacBook that sucks for one of the main purposes I purchased it for... THANKS APPLE FOR FINALLY DOING SOMETHING THIS FAULT ONCE I'VE SPENT OVER £1150 ON A PIECE OF TRASH!

I got my unibody macbook in February and I have been rather pleased with the screen. I have pretty good viewing angles and the blacks are pretty deep. I just had to calibrate it. Maybe they upgraded earlier in the year?

Does the UK also have a 2 week test period?

K, some people say this difference is caused by different suppliers and others say it is an upgrade. What is it? If I buy a new MacBook will I get the new screen or is it just being lucky or not? Anyone knows?

Anyone have both the new and old screens and can compare vertical viewing angles? That is how far can you tilt the screen back and forward before the screen inverts or whatever that "negative" look is called? And if you have an all black screen is it evenly black or does half of it look different than the other half? Not sure of the right words to use to explain the phenomenon.

Its probably both. Apple probably likes the new supplier and their screen, so they'll stick with them or continue to improve the screens in the future.

Thanx it shows that my screen model as 00009C8C by doing the
System Preferences/Displays/Color/Open Profile/#13

Also use the Terminal command listed in the article:
Code:
ioreg -lw0 | grep IODisplayEDID | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6
Paste that into Terminal, hit enter, and it'll give you the vendor's part number for the screen, which you'll be able to look up on google and find out who made your screen.

It was noticed in April actually by many forum members. It took MR 2 months to report because they need evidence before making claims.

And how could you possibly not notice a better screen?

The Gizmodo review of the MBP and the MB really showed how much better the MBP's screen was. It's nice to see that Apple upgraded the screens. Or it was the manufacturer.

Now all they have to do is upgrade the standard ram and hdd.

I like my MacBook's screen. It's a 9C89 manufactured in March, but it seems to have no leaks of light.
