wow. nice. i wonder why apple didn't at least put this info on their website?

Then it would be an admission of using low quality screens in earlier rev. contrary to their marketing hype. How many people who knew the screen sucked but kept it anyway "just because" would be up in arms? and exchanging/returning two week old laptops they'd have to resell.

Actually, if the screen is as good as the comparison shots in the article it would finally equal Apples advertising hype. The original screens sucked. Don't care what anyone says, I had one and returned it because of the screen. I know I wasn't the only one.

Why admit it when they can just fix it and be done? If they admit it I think they have to recall the early machines. That is $$.

It was said that Apple refused to admit anything and that it would be around April (6 months) when they would quietly upgrade the screens. Looks like that was the case and that my decision to return mine early on for an Air was a good decision. Now the MB is a GREAT buy and a GREAT machine. If I did not love my Air so much I would probably sell it for a new MB. I loves me some glass trackpad.

Ummm, so I do believe I called this one in October.... ;)

@ Jessica

Fix what? There was nothing defective with the old screens, they just had less contrast and viewing angles, thats not a defect.

It wasn't broken there, dear.

I wonder how many are going to try and get theirs replaced because of this article :D

Wouldnt matter, theres still loads of "older" UMB's to replace them. Until a good 6+ months out, Apple seems to have a thing about replacing your product with the exact same one.

Less contrast and viewing angles that was outside their advertised specs. I call that a defect. Defend it all you want as I refuse to really worry about it, but clearly there was an issue. No company willingly decides to put a better anything in a product without there being some reason. If you believe otherwise I have some swampland in Arizona to sell you. PM me for details. :D

Sweetheart, it was defective and most know it and clearly so does Apple. Why else would they upgrade the screens if there were no issue? Sorry hun, you're wrong.

Where did Apple list anything about contrast and viewing angles?

Tons of companies do minimal updates, clearly you don't know about how manufacturing works. They are little things that just make the product a little better.

It's about time. When the new Unibody Mac's came out I originally bought a 13" Macbook. It was everything I wanted...except for the screen. I took it back and told the store manager that the screen was horrible. So she allowed me to upgrade to a Pro without paying the restocking fee.

Good job Apple. Took you long enough.

It was on their product page actually. I recall going through this when the issue first arose. Clearly you don't know much about me to even make any determination as to what I know, I suggest you take your attempt to harass members and derail the thread elsewhere. Might I suggest the PM system?

Show me the link.

Harassment? I just pointed out that you dont know manufacturing, minimal updates occur all the time, its just that you usually dont notice internals, we just happen to notice this time because its a screen you actually look at.

So that explains it.

So there was a subtle upgrade. I work at a local "preferred reseller" and one of the things we noted in service awhile back was that they changed the case to add a brass fitting in the screw wells underneath because the screw would strip the Aluminum case. There are a few other things such as subtle logic board changes but I was not aware of the screen. Just nice to confirm our suspicions.

I'm not sure if Apple's ever listed display specs for notebooks beyond size and resolution. Archive.org has nothing after March 2008 for the MacBook specs page, though.

I have an AU screen on mine, and I have had it for 6 months. After adjusting color profile and gamma, it is perfectly fine.

I am sorry but this is nonsense. By logic, there is no way that Apple will make the MB screen as good as the MBA. By experience, there are many pictures in the computerworld article and they all show degraded quality compared to the MBA screen that we all know.

The blacks are better on the new screens, but they are NOT as good as the MBA ones.

I hope these are still available when Snow Leopard comes out... this revision makes the macbook definitely the best deal for me...

EDIT : Nevermind, I thought this was for the white macbook. No firewire, not for me.

Would you prefer it if Jobs would hold a keynote and announce the slightly upgraded display?

Give me a break.

Maybe he just wants a parts list hidden away on a web page somewhere?

Always nice to know what you're actually getting if your an 'enthusiast' paying out a fair bit for an expensive apple product - cheap realtek chipsets and average parts seems to be pretty common nowadays :)

Slighty on topic - I assume they've sourced a cheaper panel that happens to work 'slightly better' (according to my huge analysis of the thread title) - news is news.

Good news on one hand but when these are housed in the atrocious glass that they are in the glassy dispay what's the use? Bring matte back...:rolleyes::apple:

Ok - I have tried capturing the screen on my brand new Macbook - recording it using my Canon Ixus 80 camera, but the result is not so good... the light plays in the screen so its hard to see how beautiful and good the new screen really is. It's the LG 9CA5 btw... I had a unibody in december which I returned because of the poorly screen, and I've seen the Pro unibody which were way better then the "old" Macbook Unibody.

But the one I got today is perfect!
