but the base frequency for the IGP is almost double, 350mhz vs 650. Should be a decent boost in games.

edit: sorry I was referring to MBA vs rMBP

it is, thing is with the pricing scheme it almost invites you to go for the rmbp 15

I hate to be that guy but do you have the canyon wallpaper displayed in the ads, it's a bit different from what we have right now in our default wallpaper selections.

Regular pro 13'' or retina?

So first off, my mac (Macbook 13'' (2007)) has sustained, well, a darn beating. It has had its fights, but I figure, it's time for it to go. So here I stand, and have to choose, wether to go for the retina, or go with the regular pro?

I won't list the specs cause they are already known, my options are:
To, either, buy the retina (low-end) OR buy the regular pro (High-End) (And upgrade to 128 SSD cause 5400rpm is BS :p) - Cause that is my budget

Anywho, i'll be surfing and watching movies. OCASIONALLY play some league of legends. I am the kind of type that has several youtube-links, FB, News, etc. running at the same time. And I demand the computer to run smoothly! so, that being said

I am torn between the retina and the pro ( let's just differenciate them there, I know it's wrong, but you get my point).

I HAVE to agree, the retina is overpriced, but still... it's freakin' tempting to buy one. eventhough it's kinda "underspeced" for the price.

is there a noticeable difference between the i7 (which would be in the pro) and the i5 in the retina? will they "handle" league of legends? which one is "best" suited for my use? I will buy one eventually, just don't know which I should choose. Help is MUCH appreciated

so to narrow it down; Basic gaming needs, (core-gaming is covered by my ASUS G53SX), surfing, videos, being able to be used... pretty much... the entire day without getting TOO warm.

Retina 13'' low-end or non-retina 13'' high hend? what do you recommend after having touched it with your own hands? ;D

thx

That SSD looks very similar to the one on the 15 inch rMBP, wonder if it is exactly the same size....

Everything else will be fine, but the only thing I'd be concerned about would be the graphics card in the 13" line which to be honest isn't great. The processor difference in this case is minimal. I'd say it mostly comes down to whether you want to pay more for the screen.
I purchased one for myself knowing full well that it's underspecced for the cost, but I am tired of dealing with 1280x800 resolution while away from my desk, so really I bought the rMBP to scale at the highest resolution. If you can deal with what is in my opinion an inexcusably low resolution for such an expensive computer, then I'd suggest go for the cMBP.

I purchased one for myself

it seems like you had regular 13'' before? in that case you actually know what you're talking about... I agree the graphics card isn't that much to be happy about, but after watching some clips on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Svz2zrWKZDw&feature=plcp) it seems like it would, most likely, handle league of legends (if you look it up, it isn't very much a graphics-demanding game, but it can use quite some power in the most intense fights).

I'm just a bit skeptical, since retina is new and everything and so many are complaining about it (and sadly, those cries are the loudest = those I hear).

So performance wise there won't be that big of a difference between the two?(cMBP and rMBP) cause if that's the case... it's probably settled... the only bummer for me would then be:

rMBP does not have 1. Disc-Drive (I'm old fashioned still have those round things from whom you import music ;D) and 2. not an ethernet-port which sucks, big time, cause cable is more reliable than wifi.

Easy one... Does it ship with the new background (the canyon river)? =)

That comes with Mountain Lion...at least 10.8.1. Here's how to find it:
1. In Finder hit Command+Shift+G to access the Go To Folder Command
2. Paste this path in the input field: /System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.Framework/Versions/A/Resources/Default Collections/
3. Locate the "2-Aerial" folder
4. It's "Aerial04.jpg"

There ya go!

I currently have the 15 rMBP and ordered the 13 due to the smaller form factor. My only concern really is the sound quality and loudness compared to them both.

The 15" rmbp ssd is compatible with the 13" so if you plan to purchase the owc retina ssd it should be compatible.

Much weaker. The 15 is very loud.

the quality may be as good at lower volumes, as these computer speakers are not very good, no matter what they do.

Short answer, it noticeably sucks compared to the 15 both in bass and just overall clarity. I think the 15 having grills on the sides of the keyboard versus the 13 which seem to pump it through the gap between the screen and keyboard.

That being said i use headphones 90% of the time so non issue for me.

1. Does it stay cool and quiet like the 15" rMBP?

2. How well does the display render red/orange gradients? Similar to the 15" rMBP? This is my personal go-to picture to test red-fidelity: http://wallpaperswide.com/petals-wallpapers.html
That picture looks simply bland on the MBA display,
and extremely vibrant on Apple's better screens, like the iPhone 5.

3. You wouldn't happen to have a 13" cMBP to compare it to with some pictures?

It doesn't seem to get any warmer / noisier than the 15". However, I don't use this with the same workload that I do the 15" (home vs work).

The image you linked looks equally vibrant on both machines.

I don't have one of the regular 13" around, sorry!

I agree - I have used the speakers in both, and they seem OK, but I use headphones mostly.

Can you tell us who makes the panel? Please enter this into Terminal and paste the result. Thanks!

ioreg -lw0 | grep \"EDID\" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

Are the UI animations slow like on the 15" rMBP while on the HD4000 graphics? I have the 15" rMBP and notice the fps while activating mission control is not as fast as the non retina MBPs. Is it the same case with the 13" rMBP?

PS. It's legit. Others can confirm.

I input that, no result.

This is definitely the case. It's not a dealbreaker for me, though. I'm comparing both at the highest scaled resolution setting.

Been discussed in multiple threads. That produces no result. So fa no one has figured out how to tell yet.

Not that it matters since the whole IR thing has reached hysteria level:eek:

under-powered, over-priced, etc, etc

screen adjusts to brighter than my 15" retina.

smaller screen than 15", looks even sharper for some reason

watch an HD movie on it, wonderful. air looks washed out in comparison

my 15" retina is my work machine--has to stay there. the 13 (i7, 512) is my overpriced portable. love it.

Exactly the same for me. I have definitely noticed the brightness difference between the 13" and 15" retina machines. The slight weight increase over the Air is well worth it.
