You might be interested in what I've had to say, because it sounds like I bought a rMBP 13" for the same reason you did. All I wanted was a 13" notebook with a higher resolution screen than 1280x800, but at the highest scaled resolution of 1680x1050 I did notice quite a bit of lag. 1440x900 is significantly better, but then the amount gained over the normal 13" is quite insufficient, and is just the same as the 13" Air. All the scaled resolutions obviously still look much better than the regular MBP though because of the HiDPI.
If you take a look through my previous posts from today I discuss it a bit more, but I'm returning this and going to try out the 15" in the hope that it is smoother at a higher resolution. :)

I can't say I notice the "quite a bit of lag" on my machine. I do notice some lag, but it's definitely not more than on the 15" at the scaled resolutions.

----------

How much available space did it come with, there's no way it came with 128gb full

Somewhere right around 120GB. I didn't have it "empty" for long, as I started installing programs right away.

----------

+1 for this.

I've noticed a little bit of it. I also notice it in some instances on the 15". However, I can't get it to occur unless I try to make it happen, so it doesn't come up in my daily usage. It's one of those things I didn't notice until it was pointed out to me on other threads for the 15" previously.

----------

Interested in SC2 performance as well. I know it's obviously not a gaming laptop, but decent sc would be nice! Can't wait for mine!

I'm not sure about Starcraft, but I installed Diablo 3. It runs on the lowest settings on a scaled down resolution, so for me it doesn't work. The 15" is able to run it much better. I've also seen better performance on a 13" Air (2012), so it has to be because of the massive resolution difference. Good for me, I don't plan on gaming on the 13". If you do want to game, I'd definitely suggest something else.

Really? wow, when i was watching MobileTechReviews video she only had 84gb, well hopefully you're right because this might make get the retina.

used for a top 25 football photo gig yesterday--quick edits, corrections, photoshop actions on 50+ image sets, multiple transmits during game--it was seamless. having the retina screen resolution and sharpness was great--even found myself doing post game stock edits (while watching the world series) on it, which i usually do on my big screen system. it is quite different from the air 13" screen.

weight/size is a big deal for me. I tried the r15" for this type of work but noticed the size/weight. the r13" is perfect. you can grab it with one hand and easily balance it in a field situation then throw it in the backpack and not even notice it. overpriced--yep. love it anyway.

I don't know if this was asked, but how good is the battery life?

Excellent. I've been getting just under 6 hours solid with the brightness turned up quite high while working online. I would assume it would not be difficult to hit the advertised 7 hours if you were more battery conscious than myself. :)

Awesome  My 13" rMBP has like 3 hours of battery life when watching videos, is this normal for you?

Will hold off till we a see a dedicated GPU.

Next update perhaps?

There wont be a dedicated GPU next update. If they didnt add one now, why would they add one when the build in graphics will be even faster(haswell)?

I predict that Apple will remove the dedicated GPU from the next gen 15". And then people will start whining that the 1st gen rMBP was "waaaaay better coz it had a discrete GPU".

thinnest bezel?

Which has the thinnest bezel then the 13 r-mb, 15" r-mb or late 2011 17"mbp????

I was playing with the 13" rMBP at the Apple store yesterday(CS5, Final Cut). I dropped $1650 on an Air not that long ago and I would be lying if i wouldn't trade it for the retina if given the opportunity. That display is just that awesome.

How worth it is it in your brutally honest opinion.

It's worth every penny.

Luckily I was within the return window for my 13" Air.

Does the speaker sound come from the keyboard or the air vents?

I can't really tell. Air vents would be a good bet, because I'd imagine sound goes through there easier than through the keyboard.

Hi,

Looks like a gorgeous machine.

I would like to know if this thing can push a high res .MKV file out through the HDMI onto a large display. My only concern about this machine would be the onboard graphics performance.

If you're using a GPU enabled (something that will use the hd4000) playback player, it'll handle it no problem easy.

Sound comes from the air vents. It's very loud and crisp, but at the same time is also quite directional which can make some sounds have a strange effect. I think the sound is very good for the size of the computer - a definite improvement over the regular 13".

Performance wise... is there a huge difference between the low-end rMBP and the High-End cMBP ? (13'')

no chance in hell i'm getting a 5400rpms HDD so the cMBP would get a 128SSD, and the price would be about the same with the rMBP. So that in mind.. just in performance would the High-End cMBP (With 128ssd) be a insane much faster, or just, a little bit?

I ask this cause I wonder how this computer would perform on the game "League of Legends", not that of a demanding game, but it can pack a punch.

Buy yourself a much cheaper or better ssd than apple will sell you, that you can replace yourself if you have two working hands (seriously, it's really easy to do).
and if you're ready to remove the optical drive for the price of the retina 13" you can also have a killer laptop (1 Tb HD, 256 Gb ssd, 16 Go RAM).
For the retina the only upgrade option you have is this.

No slaves in China.

Why wouldn't he, these machines are manufactured by slave laborers making a dollar an hour.

Oh wait....

There are no slave laborers in China.

These workers chose to work longer and longer hours, and continually demand more over time. This is what happens when your country does business with the US / Canada, everything is cheaper for us across the pond, but everything increases in cost for them over there. But who cares, as long as we get our shiny new toys a quickly and as perfect as possible right?

So your idea would be to buy a rMBP(or cMBP) , buy a better SSD, install it myself ? Cause I know for a fact that the rMBP is quite a bitch to open, and to change parts in it must be a nightmare. So I guess you're referring to the cMBP.

in my opinion 16gb of ram is overkill, unless you're a big shot editor or something.

btw which laptop are you referring to wit the "(1 Tb HD, 256 Gb ssd, 16 Go RAM)"?

About changing storage: did it with my MB 13'' (2007) it was pretty simple. this time around I just need to the entirely computer :p

So which SSD would be better and cheaper?

is there a huge difference in performance between the i7 in the cMBP and the i5 in the rMBP?
