I would probably be a buyer if they can keep the weight down, 12.9 is already a hefty device

There is no deep integration with Google Drive, so you can't keep things synced with your local folders.

You also can't do much with the files in there. There are no apps like Keka or vscode or Terminal, so the Files app is still not on par as Finder. You also can't run or compile things in the Files app.

Zip compression is built in but if you feel you need another flavor of file compression, there are several apps (both free and cheap) that work with the filesystem. Likewise for terminals. I use iSH to directly manipulate files in the "Files" filesystem and extend shortcuts with scripts. As far as VSCode, there are also several code editors like "Code App" that work with it as well. Obviously it's not VSCode, but none of those specific apps you mentioned being absent on iOS speak to limitations in the filesystem but rather those developers just not making them for iPadOS.

The files app seems to be pretty capable now. From what I've used on the iPadOS 16 beta the last few days, it does everything except let you litter your desktop with files

I am a no desktop clutter kinda guy...

But you see, those folks saying that the iPad doesn’t have a “file system”… they consider putting files on the desktop a file system! So, sorry Apple, not good enough! /s

Ugh...! Files on the desktop... Did someone knock over the trash can...?

+400$ magic keyboard

+starting at 128gb (so u need to add 100 bucks)

+the pencil if u rly wanna make use of the capacitive display (140)

making it 50$ cheaper than a MBP 14 whilst having half the ram, half the storage (8/256 vs 16/512) and a much restricted OS .

no wonder apple doesn't want to kill their ipad lineup

The article literally states the 14" iPad Pro would START with 16GB RAM & 512GB SSD...

Dear Tim Apple,

your products are getting worser each day. Nobody wants and needs a 14.1 iPad. We want a new 11" iPad Pro with Mini LED!!!!!!
Apple is becoming the second Nokia. In a few years, nobody will remember your strange company.

Imma need you to go stand in the back of the room, right there next to Michael Dell...

I hope it’s reasonably priced starting at $1,999 for the 128GB base model

There would not be a base model with 128GB SSD, as the article clearly states the 14" iPad Pro would start with a 512GB SSD...

The 15” iPad looks so compelling.

Three sizes? Seriously. And if they come out with a 15"? Then need to kill this model. They need a 'small' iPad Pro, and a 'large' iPad Pro. This isn't McDonald's where they need three (or more) different sizes of that iPad model IMO.

There are times when too many is just too much. 15", 12.9"; I'm in. 15", 14(.1)", and 12.9"? No. Just stop...

The weight will be completely impractical. The 12.9 is already heavy enough that it’s caused me serious lower left arm pain from holding it for prolonged periods. An even heavier one would unmanageable for most people I expect.
I assume anyone buying that big an iPad would be largely using it as a laptop replacement - docked to a magic keyboard and used on a desk.

Personally, I held my 11" iPad Pro while standing under the hot sun for 2 hours during my school's sports day and my back was practically complaining afterwards. :(

It could also be for drawing/sketching on a desk or at least while sitting down at a park bench or something.

I currently use a Pro 11” and Air 4 for reviewing and annotating two related PDFs at the same time (with Logitech Crayon). A 14” iPad would be a more convenient and space saving alternative to my current setup.

Oh, very tempting indeed. Smaller bezels might make it just a little larger larger than the 1:st gen 12.9.

11 inch lovers: why even bother commenting in threads about a larger than 12.9 iPad? You will not convert anyone.

And here, I just bought the 5th gen 12.9. Of course they're coming out with a bigger one. Eh, in my experience, the ipads stay useful far longer; I've got a first gen 12.9 that the kiddos watch shows on just fine. Still, at that size, it'll likely be heavy enough to not casually carry around.
Agree! It will be uncomfortable holding for 3 minutes unless they can cut the weight.

Is the 12.9" iPad too small for you to have both documents open side by side?

This will be a VERY niche product. For the price this will cost with a keyboard what is the draw for most people over a MBA M2 that the currently cheaper and more portable 12.9 wouldn’t offer? This will continue the great for artists who need a larger canvas theme but for everyone else… ?
Oh there will be plenty of people getting it for bragging rights, you'll see all of them complaining here telling you they won't ever buy another iPad ever as they have the top of the line one and still does not replace the computer for them.

That market is worth alone I tell you!

I think a 14 inch iPad would be a pretty good option - with slim bezels it might not be overall much bigger than the 12.9.

For me the 'problem' iPad is the 11 inch - it's just too thick overall (without the rounded edges) and heavy. I upgraded from a 10.5 to an 11 and honestly prefer the 10.5 in the hand. Shrinking the bezels and giving it a bit of a diet generally would be most welcome.

The next thing, large tablets.. started by Samsung, but people do seem to like the new large Samsung tablet so there's a bit of a market for them at least. I'll stick to my 11" though, better for holding to play games.

There is no deep integration with Google Drive, so you can't keep things synced with your local folders.
Capabilities of the Files app aside, the current version of Google Drive doesn't do that with the Finder (or on Windows) either; you can browse your entire Drive through the Finder/Windows Explorer and download on demand, but it doesn't keep anything in your local storage synchronized the way iCloud Drive or Dropbox does.

Nor does Google Drive do a particularly good job of keeping things synced even on the cloud end; my organization standardized on the G-suite so we use Google Drive a lot, and we've all restored to making a copy of Excel files on local storage then copying when done after having it completely fail to save changes on multiple occasions. All the fancy Office Suite integration is kinda useless when it says you're clear to modify a file, you spend an hour doing that, then when you close it your changes get tossed and replaced with an old version from the cloud.

It works well enough if you access it entirely through a browser (like Google apparently thinks everyone should), but the desktop integration has some egregious bugs.

A 14 inch tablet seems too big to be an effective tablet. I will have to wait and see, one thing is for sure, it will be expen$ive.
