Who wants them to bring on the Magsafe 2 to 3 adapter so my old charger will still work?
Will it though? I thought existing MagSafe 2 chargers topped out at 85W; the included charger on these new models is 140W and I have no idea how much of that these new systems _need_. My 16" won't charge properly if I give it less than 90W.

This will be my first time totally spec'ing out a MBP (64gb Pro Max, 8GB SSD). Delivery says as late as 12/23, which is fine, as long as it physically shows up in FY 2021. Does anyone know when they charge you? At shipping, or day of order?

Even the least expensive 14" version is over-kill for 99.9% of ALL Apple consumers !

So, I wonder who Apple thinks the Target Market really is.

Just my two cents, but I think it would be nice if MR would ask those intending to buy which application OR applications they intend to use it for.
Why not create a post with a poll and ask yourself?

Having just ordered the 2nd 14” option, the 10 cpu core, 16gpu core option with the 96w adapter and 1tb ssd im already thinking i ordered the wrong one.

I was planning on getting a Mac mini pro max, when it comes out. But it is probably going to cost half as much to upgrade the mbp vs a separate mini.

Ive just never used a laptop as my main machine. Not sure what to do.
Let’s try and see what you should get. Why did you buy that model with those specs?

I would also be very interested in learning about this.

Wondering the same.
I'm no export but unless you're rendering 4k or 8k video editing projects and effects, or compiling code, you may not feel much of a difference if any between 8 and 10 cores. Maybe on demanding games? But even then I'm not sure as that would presumably be more of a GPU thing. We'll have to see.

If you are going to use your computer for video rendering or code compiling, you will see a pretty scalar increase in performance (6x core -> 8x core is 33% more, expect around 33% more performance).
For any other task you will likely never notice.
Perfect response and exactly what I was looking for. I do in fact do intense rendering. I ordered the base with 1tb and 3gb ssd, but may reconsider and buck up for the 10 core 16 gpu model instead. Thanks again for the insight.

Ordered the Space Grey 14" base model + 1TB SSD through the Education store and with trade-in, I'm paying $800... No brainer for me. I ordered within 15 minutes of the store re-opening and my ship date is the 1st week of November! I think these are selling quite well... The M1 chips have been a boon to Apple!

Work got me an M1 MBA, and that's able to outperform my late 2018 15" 32 ram, 1 gig SSD, i9...

Does anybody know for certain , that there are no computing power differences between the 14 and 16 inch if they are kitted out exactly the same ?

It’ll be interesting to see the performance differences between the M1 Max (10C CPU/32C GPU) on the 14-inch with the 96W power adapter compared to the same one on the 16-inch with the 140W power adapter.

Traded in my 2019 6-core i7 16" with 512GB storage and 64GB RAM for a 10-core M1 Pro 16" with 1TB storage and 32GB RAM. I got over $1,200 trade in value, and given how much I used the older machine over the two years I had it, I feel that was very fair. My ETA is 11/5.

RAM hasn't been my limiting factor in some time, and I have no use case for the M1 Max GPU cores and video processing oomf, so the additional fast SSD storage is way more appealing to me. Those read/write speeds are intense. These are very appealing systems - they tackled a whole laundry list of issues I had in one fell swoop.
You ordered the same set up as me. I’m back and forth about whether I should have got the Max, but can’t think of a use case where I’d need that much GPU.

Didn’t even watch the event but pulled the trigger for a base 14”, trading in my base M1 MBP for $790 back. Comes next week.

Even though I wasn’t doing rendering or heavy work I was getting a LOT of swapping/beach balling with the 8GB base, and I suspect that 256 SSD got a lot of wear. 16/512 is the sweet spot for my use.

Can anyone explain the real-life value of bumping from 8-core to 10-core?

Coming from 13" 2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
Identical to M1 7c -> 8c I would say (7-8 (actually 3P-4P) is 33% more, this 8-10 is actually 6P-8P, also 33% more).
Maybe just look up some video comparison for M1 7c vs 8c.

Ordered a 14”, with 10/16/16 and 32GB ram, silver. After 3 Space Grey’s, I went silver this time to break it up.

Ordered almost immediately after the event and should be here next Tuesday.
