If you are going to use your computer for video rendering or code compiling, you will see a pretty scalar increase in performance (6x core -> 8x core is 33% more, expect around 33% more performance).
For any other task you will likely never notice.
That was my thought and reasoning for ordering the 14” base. I don’t notice many CPU issues on the M1 MBP except when running low on memory and it starts swapping.

Im also primarily looking to use with lightroom classic. I don't do any video. I'm confused about GPU. How important is it for lightroom/photo work? Which one are you getting? I wanted a 14inch one but wondering how important GPU is.
I'm not sure either but just went with the cheaper option.
Fast charging requires the 96W adapter.
Urgh. I wish I had seen that before, it was only a £20 upgrade.

Even the least expensive 14" version is over-kill for 99.9% of ALL Apple consumers !

So, I wonder who Apple thinks the Target Market really is.

Just my two cents, but I think it would be nice if MR would ask those intending to buy which application OR applications they intend to use it for.
Um, you said consumer.... you're right.... but this isn't a consumer level product. Only an idiot spends this kind of cash to browse the web, email, and watch TicTock vids on. So yeah. It is, because that's the point. This isn't for making a TicTock video. It's for making professional video and graphics.

What Apple lacks in their consumer product line is choice in display size and always has. Some people do want bigger than a 13" display but don't need to horsepower of the Pro models.

I hope the extra ports and better screen make it to the air next time around. Like you said, for me (and many others) the pro is overkill, but would love to not have to live the dongle life with the air.

Do you think we will be seeing soon MAC MINIS or MAC PRO (DESKTOP) with the new chips as well?

Technically don’t you need the iPhone 13 Pro Max to make a Tiktok video?

Can anyone explain the real-life value of bumping from 8-core to 10-core?

Coming from 13" 2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
Meh, it's two more cores (so, 25% more), IF you're using software that can make good effective use of multiple cores. If you're using software that can only run single-threaded, then not as much improvement.

The behind the scenes bit is that they don't make separate chips for 8-core models, they make 10-core chips and test all of them. If only 8 or 9 cores work, they can disable two cores at the chip level and use them in 8-core machines. If all 10 cores work, they go into 10-core machines. It helps them to counteract problems with yield.

Interestingly, my order confirmation email says the 16" M1 Max comes with a 140W adapter??

Yep, all the 16" models have the bigger adapter, and a bigger battery than 14", at maxed out airline battery size limits. They also have longer lasting battery life than all the 14" and 13" models. It's all in the tech specs on the Apple site.

Absolutely correct. I bought the 16” today that I have absolutely no use for in terms of performance but I do need the giant screen. I’m only going to be using Word, have a bunch of Safari tabs open, a PDF viewer, and citation software.

anyone know if we can swap out the 67W charger for the 96W charger and pay the difference once we get our MBP?

Apple is horrible at differentiating size vs performance. For a phones for a long time, you could only get performance at larger sizes until they finally introduced the minis.

For laptops it is the same. My 70 year old mom wants a large screen, but doesn't need much power. A 13.3" air has plenty of power for her, but a tiny screen.

So, I'm left looking at 16" $2500 apple macbook pro models vs. surprisingly decent 15" or so PC laptops in the $700-$900 range (now they actually come with decent screens, SSD's, decent touchpads, etc).

It's not apples-to-apples but for her a $2500 machine would be completely ridiculous.

Hush-ya-mout bruh don’t kill the dream baby, just don’t. Don’t crush others dream ;)

I spoke to an Apple Support agent today and all they could offer was cancelling my order, for me to order again and go to the back of the queue.
You have 2 weeks to return it. I’d say order the second charger and then return the other one explaining the situation

I think the problem is that the original charger is packaged with the MBP, so it isn't something you can return on its own. I can live with the slower charger I am sure.

You got the 8 core base model right? Let me know how it is with Lightroom. Ideally I want a smaller and lighter computer (im hoping that will be the new air released next year) but not sure I can wait until then. So thinking to get the base model and then sell it trade when the air comes out. I’ve been using the 12inch MacBook for years hoping and praying for an updated version. Sadly it hasn’t come :(

Yes, I got the 8 core option. I’m sure Lightroom will run better than on the 12” MacBook, I’m planning on the 14” replacing both my iMac and MacBook.

The 12” MacBook is such an underrated machine. I think the current MacBook Air is the spiritual replacement.

Same! Do you think if we go to the Apple store that they will allow us to trade it in for the price difference? I read something about this on a thread but now I can’t remember which thread.

If anyone can lend some insight, that would be helpful.

EDIT: Well I just got caught up here, so ok…. guess maybe not.
