iPhone 14 Pro 14 Pro camera looses to android phones.

At the end of the day I have my 14P because it has a really good camera AND because it’s easier to be part of the ecosystem. It may not be the “best” but it’s definitely not bad. I would rather be able to send my family an uncompressed (or lightly compressed) picture/video just using messages rather than have them access via Google drive or something. I know other messengers exist but my parents and siblings would never use anything other than messages.

I found out the hard way about compressed videos this past Christmas. I sent a couple to a friend with an android phone and they were tiny. When he tapped on them to make them bigger, they were a blurry mess.

I genuinely think my S21 Ultra took better pictures more of the time than my 14PM. Particularly well lit landscapes.
I agree, even my s21 plus take better pics most of the time as compared to my 14PM. Though s21 plus photos comes out as softer but in other aspects photos tend to come out better.

The explanation is that out of those photos, some android phones took better photos in those specific conditions. There’s nothing else to it.

No flagship smartphone camera is going to take a better phone than a competitor every single time. Sometimes an iPhone will take better photos, and sometimes an Android take better photos. What matters way more than the camera is the skill and knowledge of the person using the camera.
I agree with this.

Why would you do a competition of imaging with phones ? real camera will always beat phones if you know how to use these: larger pixels, better optics... that's just physics. Software can patch results to make it look nice, it cannot get missing information.

Phones are good for "souvenir". They can be quite good at it, but that's it.

That's how silly you sound. We're talking about phones.

Really? Cracked screen. Did you get a replacement or still waiting? I haven’t had any focus issues with my two 14 PM iPhones. If I don’t touch the screen where I want the camera to focus, then the camera uses continuous auto focus and will focus on the closet object to the camera. You may have to “select” where you want the camera to focus if you haven’t already done so by touching the area of interest. Then drag your finger up / down to adjust the exposure. I wonder if you have a damaged camera module if the iPhone was delivered in bad shape. However you haven’t mentioned if you received a replacement.

I called about a replacement, but it was going to take weeks and I wasn't going without a phone. They logged it as a "cosmetic imperfection" and only offered to repair it.

Supposedly, once I get some time, I can walk into an Apple Store and they'll replace it. As for the camera, there's some discussion on the Apple support boards that Apple is aware of the autofocusing issues and is working on a software fix.

It just depends on what you want. If you put two pictures in front of someone often people will pick out one that's over saturated in color as "better". Generally the iPhone will render the colors more accurately. That may or may not be important to someone.

The only area that an android phone's camera is better is astrophotography. I don't know what Apple is waiting for but this is something they need to get going with

These tests are pretty basic. Just out of the camera jpeg or heic with zero adjustment or exposure compensation. In the hands of someone who knows what they are doing, even with basic photography skills, the iPhone camera can‘t be beat. The people that post these comparisons aren’t photographers, just average geeks if you will. When ProRaw is used, edits done, the others loose easily. Tony Northrup tested the iPhone against the pixel 7 and the pixel lost. as a photographer myself, I’m sure most of you have seen my photography and have seen what the iPhone camera is capable of. The 48mp sensor is fantastic and exactly what I have been patiently waiting on from Apple. Hopefully I’ll be teaching an iPhone photography class in my area soon. Here is a cool shot I took this weekend of my stepbrother. ProRaw at 48mp. So much detail. Anyway, if you have an iPhone, enjoy it, use the camera often and practice. I’ve used android before, the cameras are great but the Samsung is lacking the software to really make the camera better. Apple may be behind in the megapixel race, but their software for the cameras is ex good, especially with ProRaw.

Absolutely Identical results ( if not better ) can be achieved using S 22U's 108MP sensor and shooting in Expert Raw mode. Absolutely mind-blowing results after a few Lightroom touch ups. You're not bringing anything new here, nobody on this thread is casually shooting 300MB RAW files and then editing them, the conversation and the aforementioned test is clearly about the Auto point and shoot mode.

Nice Husky btw

What really matters in all this is... who cares? Photography just like any art is highly subjective and I would say the majority like punchy colors which majority of android phones use. I know when I had any galaxy phone there was always an ever so slight skin softening and iPhone photos are typically more dull in color. Just like art it is what you do with what you have, both sides have a RAW mode for those who care, and auto point in shoot mode for those who want that. If getting a phone that takes photos how you like is a big determining factor then that will be your influence of phone choice not only between iPhone and android deciding which android you want. Simple, ridiculous videos like the MKBHD one is just massive clickbait that generates fanboys/girls to try to prove to themselves that they made the right choice.

And clicks generate revenue. The more conflict these types of vids cause, the more $$$.

Ok, but the S22 uses pixel binning correct? The 108mp sensor only gives you 27mp files in raw right? With the iPhone 14 Pro series, all 48mp resolution is only available with ProRAW unless third party apps like Halide or ProCamera is used, otherwise 12mp files. So does expert raw actually give you 108mp resolution? If so how large are the raw files. I’ve seen 108 mb max so far on the 14 pro max using ProRAW. I use ProRAW for every photo I take, I have the 1TB iPhone 14 pro max (X2). I don’t like jpeg or HEIF files as casual shooting. I shoot RAW. I shoot raw on my Sony camera bodies, same on iPhone. I haven’t been able to find downloadable samples of a 108mp file from the S22. I do believe that the software on the iPhone for the camera is better than that of the S22, especially with video.

Nah, it has the option to bin in the regular camera app down to 12MP but with the ExpertRaw it's the full 108MP resolution. There are a couple of good examples of edited pics in RAW format here from the S22 below, also unless absolutely necessary most photos taken in RAW are for planned events and any DSLR or Mirrorless will bury any phone so.....

Video is a different story, also if you specifically work with Final Cut then the point is moot.

Ok thanks. I’ll look those up. I choose to shoot with my iPhone more than my Sony A7R III because I enjoy it. I’ll use the Sony when paid jobs come up, otherwise it’s all iPhone. I like to push it to see what I can achieve and so far, I’ve been really impressed. I’ve been a photographer for a long time, I started back in 1988. There is a guy named Russell Preston Brown (dr_brown on Instagram) shoots with his iPhone and profoto strobes using the profoto app. Amazing stuff. He shoots in many ways I like and want to pursue with my iPhone, it’s the profoto strobes that I can’t afford at the moment. I’m waiting for BeastGrip to release the 1.7x telephoto for the BeastGrip pro that I use. That will be great for portraits and astrophotography. Check out Dr Brown. https://instagram.com/dr_brown?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

I use Sony mirrorless system as well, used to be a big Nikon guy. It's incredible how far photography has come even from not as far back as when you've started. If someone told us back then, the IQ that could be achieved from our future pocket computers, we'd laugh. I'll check out the link
