I use Sony mirrorless system as well, used to be a big Nikon guy. It's incredible how far photography has come even from not as far back as when you've started. If someone told us back then, the IQ that could be achieved from our future pocket computers, we'd laugh. I'll check out the link
Yeah I started with Nikon as well, the FM2 was my first all manual film camera. I have enjoyed the chat.

Ok thanks. I’ll look those up. I choose to shoot with my iPhone more than my Sony A7R III because I enjoy it. I’ll use the Sony when paid jobs come up, otherwise it’s all iPhone.
I also shoot with a Sony a7riii. December was a busy month for me... and all my paid shoots (mostly IG influencer portraits), and a few Christmas family portraits... were all shot with my a7riii. The funny part is the IG influencers prefer my a7riii... and they own iPhone 14 pros. Plus... Sony's eye autofocus is hard to beat... and reliable with all the lenses I use. I do use my iPhone 14 pro for their video IG reels... I used to use my a7riii in the past with a gimbal... but "action mode" changed that. I just air drop their vids... or post vids in shared iCloud folders for my regulars. For my personal pics... I use my iPhone 14 pro because I'm not picky... and I don't shoot in Apply proraw. If I were picky and took the time on post processing editing... I would choose the a7riii raw files over my iPhone.

That’s cool.. thanks for the reply. The iPhone has spoiled me with ProRAW and Lightroom mobile. I can edit right there on the iPhone or iPad. I’ve gotten to where I don’t want to use the Sony and then wait til I get home, load the files on the computer and edit just to transfer the images back to my iPhone or iPad. With 48mp, the iPhone has more resolution than my Sony. Yes the sensor is smaller but the quality is there. The 14 pro max has nearly replaced my Sony.

I don’t believe that it’s all about sponsors. Best overall camera goes to 14 Pros and best overall smartphone to GS22:

I am of the opinion that I don't care if the other companies phone is better or not. I will remain with the Apple product anyway as everything I own in tech is Apple devices. It is just simpler to use one company for. I just found it hard to understand the other side as you have to make so many choices that it gets to confusing for me. I am just going to stick what I am comfortable with and not get confused when I have a grasp of what Apple has had for years.

We have got to the age of phones where the slightly evolved monkey holding the phone matters more than the phone.
No this has always been the case. Just because you have a nice camera doesn't mean you're gonna get a nice photo. If you have no skill, you're not gonna get the shot.

It just depends on what you want. If you put two pictures in front of someone often people will pick out one that's over saturated in color as "better". Generally the iPhone will render the colors more accurately. That may or may not be important to someone.

The only area that an android phone's camera is better is astrophotography. I don't know what Apple is waiting for but this is something they need to get going with
That's going to depend upon camera module and sensor, not necessarily what OS it's running. My 11PM gets some pretty smashing astro shots on just the standard camera app. I can't wait to test the 15 when we get them this coming fall. I need to get my friend to test out the 14PM on some astro, see how it compares to the 11PM.

Absolutely Identical results ( if not better ) can be achieved using S 22U's 108MP sensor and shooting in Expert Raw mode. Absolutely mind-blowing results after a few Lightroom touch ups. You're not bringing anything new here, nobody on this thread is casually shooting 300MB RAW files and then editing them, the conversation and the aforementioned test is clearly about the Auto point and shoot mode.

Nice Husky btw
Guess I have the Moment and Darkroom apps for no reason.... I casually shoot RAW all the time.

Due to the much larger sensor size in the iPhone 14 Pro Max, the night sky looks so much better over the 13 Pro Max has the sensor is 62% larger. The 13 Pro Max has a sensor that is 50% larger than the 12 promax and the 12 Pro Max has a sensor that was 42% larger than the 11 Pro Max. Here are two examples taken with my 14 Pro Max, night mode, 30 second exposures. this is with ProRaw and edited in Lightroom mobile. I had the 11 promax, and it was nowhere near this good. The 13 promax was better, but still not as clear with this much resolution in the stars. so I think the 14 promax so far has improved greatly for Astro photos. I just wish Apple would give us more than 10 second exposures so that apps like Even Longer and others can be manipulated to expose longer than one second. if we could have it my way, I would choose a lower ISO like 800 or even 400 and expose for three or four minutes on a tracking platform so the stars won’t be trailed. I could get so much clearer photos that way.

So next question would be. Has any android phone come close or even close the gap to iPhones video capture ?
No. It's not even remotely close.

The biggest issue I have with Marques Brownlee is he's always been a massive Samsung shill. Unsurprisingly, he picked the Samsung S22 Ultra as his phone of the year. Mrwhosetheboss is also this way and it makes it difficult to take him seriously.

Those look awesome. I get 30 second exposures on the stock camera app on the 11PM. You turn on low light mode, rock the scroll to 10s, wait a tick and it'll toggle to 30s on its own if it's dark enough. All of the time settings do this.

MKBHD tried to be scientific about it but three photos is a terrible terrible sample. It basically subjects the whole test to poor sample bias. Lot more photos needed to have a sample with scientific significance. I think the idea was good but if you make a scientific test, go scientific all the way man… adequate sample size is like the basics.

These tests are pretty basic. Just out of the camera jpeg or heic with zero adjustment or exposure compensation. In the hands of someone who knows what they are doing, even with basic photography skills, the iPhone camera can‘t be beat. The people that post these comparisons aren’t photographers, just average geeks if you will. When ProRaw is used, edits done, the others loose easily. Tony Northrup tested the iPhone against the pixel 7 and the pixel lost. as a photographer myself, I’m sure most of you have seen my photography and have seen what the iPhone camera is capable of. The 48mp sensor is fantastic and exactly what I have been patiently waiting on from Apple. Hopefully I’ll be teaching an iPhone photography class in my area soon. Here is a cool shot I took this weekend of my stepbrother. ProRaw at 48mp. So much detail. Anyway, if you have an iPhone, enjoy it, use the camera often and practice. I’ve used android before, the cameras are great but the Samsung is lacking the software to really make the camera better. Apple may be behind in the megapixel race, but their software for the cameras is ex good, especially with ProRaw.

Todd, are you post processing these shots? I thought you talked about your workflow before, but I can't find it.

I do edit nearly all of my shots because I shoot RAW all the time. I use Lightroom mobile and Pixelmator Photo app. I have presets that I have purchased (some good, some not so good) and from some of them, I made new ones. Now I hardly use the ones I bought for Lightroom and use those that were created. I just apply one of my presets which has basic steps like highlights, sharpening, optics, and exposure. From there I’ll adjust the color if needed, then selective color (individual channels), and masking. I know this may sound overwhelming, but I have done my own edits for so long that it literally takes me just a couple of minutes to edit an image.

Do you shoot raw? If not, there isn’t a whole lot that can be done to help a jpeg file, especially if the highlights are blown or one or more color channels are blown (over 255 on the far right of the histogram). I love shooting in RAW because of the control I have over the image and make it my own, then saving exporting the edits as a jpeg. My RAW files remain a RAW file much like a film negative, I can undo all edits and start over if needed for a different look.

I’m not sure if I have posted my workflow here.. I’ve slept since then, LOL. I may have for the Milky Way photos, but not sure. Please let me know if I can assist you with anything regarding editing or taking photos with your iPhone or camera.

I am super impressed with the iPhone 14 pro max 48mp camera… so much resolution. These were taken with my iPhone 14 Pro max default camera app and edited with Pixelmator photo app this time. ProRAW was used. Screenshots of the zoomed in crops shown below.

Yeah I find the 14 Pro camera pretty terrible. Big downgrade over 13 Pro.
Lol, not sure how to use the camera, ‘eh? The 14 pro camera is a HUGE upgrade over the 13 pro series. In the hands of a professional like myself, I find the camera amazing with so much resolution, dynamic range, & color depth. There are photography courses online along with YouTube that will help you out, look into it.

I don’t get too hung up on things like this as phones all do something better than another. It’s not about one aspect though. The camera on my 13PM is plenty good enough for me at the moment and no doubt the 14P is better and certain Android phones too. I’m not using those phones though so don’t care.

I understand.. however since I love photography so much, I only upgrade to the new iPhones just for the camera alone. All the apps, emails, web browsing looks and works the same on all iPhone models. That seems to hardly change. The 14 pro series was designed for more serious photographers who want to push photography to a new level. If one isn’t interested in the new camera on the 14 pro, then the regular 14 or 14 plus is the model one should get. However this isn’t always the case. People buy the pro model to make statement or to keep up with the Jones’ because they like the way it looks. Sadly for most, the cameras are hardly used.

I love photography too and have a couple of DSLR’s that use for occasions when I want a really good photo. The 13PM I have is good enough for social media pics and I don’t need a 14P at this point in time. I’m too old to worry about keeping up with the Jones’ and to be honest my circles aren’t into phones anyway.

Agreed but it’s nothing like with the phone that has a feature for astrophotography. I don’t know if it’s hardware or the operating system but it’s a night and day difference. You can take a picture of the sky with an iPhone but it’s not going to be the same Trust me. I have an iPhone 14 PM and my friend has a Samsung and I don’t even bother showing him my sky pictures. It’s embarrassing.

Sounds like stacking but I've never heard of any phone that does stacking natively. It might be an app he's using.

Of course, when your favorite phone doesn't win the reviewers must be amateurs and/or biased.😆
