The Apple Store down thing always reminds me of the Trueman show:

Network Executive: [hangs up phone] The sponsors are threatening to rip up their contracts!
Christof: [pointing at the "Technical fault... Please stand by... " graphic] Why? We're getting higher ratings for this graphic than we've ever had on this show.

I have to wonder if the hype will continue to fuel their insanely high prices (compared to similar hardware platforms) - or if they will really turn up the heat and lower the cost?

I'd like the high-end 15" in the 1799 range.

I think I know the answer to my own question, unfortunately... I'll end up sticking with my hackintosh.

We'll find out in a few hours. That could be why the 15" base has a slower graphics chip than the old one.

Did they just dropped the ExpressCard/34 slot??
Hope not. If it goes from the 17 inch, then it will mean I will be forced to buy a PC. I really need to start replacing my 2006 and 2007 machines.

I require eSATA for video and also MADI interfaces for sound location work.

Apple are really ignoring their professional users who require such interfaces. Just look at what happened when they removed Firewire from the MacBook Pro machines the other year.

what are the chances of apple updating the appearance of the new mbp's? I am not a huge fan of the silver unibody and black keyboard...

If that's the case, then goodbye i7 iMac and hello i7 MBP! Providing the i7 is a Quad of course.

If you can wait until the redesign, do it. This one is viewed internally as a minor refresh, all hands are on deck for the redesign.

For those complaining about the screen, the next one will showcase an excellent screen, like what the Retina display did for the iPhone.

LOL @ "you raped the elipses"...guess that means I raped the parenthetical phrase ; )

I don't live near an apple store as I'm in Mississippi. Can I expect Best Buy to have these in the morning?

Apple has been pushing Grand Central Dispatch and OpenCL to devs, GCD in order to manage all cores available with the devs not having to focus on parallel computing, MPI or OpenMP (which are a pain), OpenCL in order to use any processing unit available (CPU GPU or watever chip is compatible with the norm the reason why they weren't going away from the C2D Nvidia combo in the small machines, but now that Nvidia has terminated that range of GPU Apple has had to move to intel internal GPU which aren't compatible with OpenCL right now).

As far as their own software, some parts of the system already use GCD but not much since it was introduced with Snow Leopard, Lion will probably ensure all parts of the system use it.

Final Cut Pro is due for a massive update (which will probably require Lion for the quicktime update), in order to go from 32bits to 64bits, a better use of the cores (GCD) and the graphics (OpenCL).

What could be interesting is to see the behavior of the last software Apple has updated : iLife.

If the new version of iMovie uses multiples cores more evenly then it would be good news for the future updates of iWork, and the pro software like Final Cut Studio etc.

5400 hdd? what happened to 7200rpm?

Exactly my thought. A Quad i7 on 5400 rpm? Talk about a bottleneck. Seems like quite a waste for the CPU potential. Hopefully BTO models will offer some better drive than that, but it shouldn't be there in the baseline to begin with. I was assuming at least 7200 rpm with SSD as a BTO variant.

I hope they lower the prices in the UK a bit, they are ridiculous now especially with the 20% VAT.

BAA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA!!!

I'm from the UK too and "lower prices" in the same sentence as "UK" is an oxymoron!

For those complaining about the screen, the next one will showcase an excellent screen, like what the Retina display did for the iPhone.

Seriously, Apple is annoying with this wait-for-next-gen..

And regarding screen, what is Retina? You mean 300+ ppi screen? Do you even realize how big it'd be?

The Ati 6490M in the 15" is super slow. Its actually slower than the current 330M. Why do they do this?
Especially regarding the fact that the HD 3000 integrated into the CPU of the same computer is almost equally fast. What a rip-off

The benchmarks that we have seen compared a computer with top of the range desktop quad core i7 and HD 3000, and that was only faster on small screen sizes where the CPU speed matters and not the graphics speed; it lost on bigger screen sizes.

But you are not getting the HD 3000 in a laptop. The mobile CPUs use the HD 2000 which runs at half the speed of the HD 3000.

How easy are these unibodies to open compared to the old-style MBP? I will need to install more RAM and an SSD from OWC. Also the optical drive kit if Apple doesn't provide a solution. I want 128gb SSD for OS and apps and 1Tb HDD for file storage.

MBP 13": Nine screws at the bottom, using a Philips #0 screw driver. Very easy. For the hard drive you'd like to have another screw driver (I think it's Torx) but pliers and doing things carefully works fine. I think the memory was pretty accessible as well, but I didn't check too well. The L-frame behind the battery on the old MacBook only had three screws, but they were a bit tricky to get in properly.
