You'll be amazed how quickly they can start caring after he is joined by many more of us. I for one am switching when my 2014 MBP dies some day. That is unless Apple puts some focus on their professional users again.

Joining you soon. I'm already rocking a fresh KDE Neon install on my desktop PC. Still undecided on the notebook situation because my 2014 MBP is still quite powerful.

What exactly defines a "professional" user in your estimation?

Time and again I see these posts claiming that the MacBook Pro is no longer for "professionals" and yet no one has defined who those people are. Are we talking about programmers? They'd be better off with any desktop. Are we talking musicians? Plenty use them with great success, particularly performers. Are we talking photographers? Are we talking about businessmen? I think the problem is that so many people think that they are some narrow definition of "professional" but are ignoring the many people who use these computers for their work. It actually amazes me how many so called reviews of this pro machine involve some complaint about lack of gaming performance. As if that is a professional eandevour.

... that's weird. i thought that macbook is selling so INCREDIBLY well, why does it need an update after such a short period of time? ;-)

Erm, because its a nice thing to provide customers with updates? Apple used to do minor upgrades twice per year, following Intel's release schedule. Then Intel has totally messed up their schedule. Maybe Apple is trying to get back to their old release plans. And finally, Intel has at last released all the Kaby Lake CPUs that are required for Mac laptop updates across the boards, so that is also a good reason.

You are absolutely right, but a bit late. - That has been discussed previously in the thread.

It'd be great if Apple do something unexpected and somehow amaze people *if* this announcement bears any fruit.

When they'd announced the new MacBook Pro last Autumn they hadn't had any on display in the Covent Garden Apple Store and I finally got to see one in the flesh a couple of weekends ago.

As nice as it was I found it hard pressed to be truly blown away by what it had to offer. Sure Touch ID is nice, as is the Touch Bar but if I had the money to buy one, would I? No, I wouldn't.

I'm not a 'Pro' user but if I was I'd definitely be looking at the competition first. I feel Apple, in some ways, have been resting on their laurels for a couple of years now and whilst they have a long way to go first my biggest fear is they'll get too complacent and fall behind in the race.

Couldn't care less. My Early 2011 17" MBP died just after the extended gfx replacement program.

I bought a 17" Windows laptop with a GTX1060. It's about the same size and weight as my old 17" MBP, is VR capable, and was cheaper than the new 15" MBP. Even the keybord feels better than the Apple ones (which is surprising, since at work I'm using an Apple usb keyboard with numeric keypad).

Only drawbacks: 1080p screen (although it is 120 Hz, and there is a more expensive 60hz 4k version for this model), and weak battery life.

Have you actually used one? I hate to argue on the internet but I get so tired of hearing people complain about the new MacBook pros when they have never even used one. Sure they are too expensive in many people's eyes (mine too to be honest) and sure people wanted more (don't they always?) but they are the fastest, lightest and most powerful laptops have ever made and will out perform your 2011, quite considerably. I too was disappointed when they were released but after using one (had one at work) have realised they are great machines. Also, the previous model - didn't only the very top 15 inch have ANY gpu? How people were fine with that I don't know...

Well I'm someone who will complain about the new MacBook Pros, who has used more of them than I'd like to have.

We bought 12 of them at work after the big MacBook Pro drought, and they have been the most disappointing and problematic Macs I've ever deployed (I've been working with Macs since 1986).

I'm not against the change to USB-C - or any aggressive change of standards - if it works. I use a single USB-C port MacBook myself, with no problems at all, I love it in fact, it's stellar little laptop.

But the fact that even Apple themselves don't make even an external keyboard that is USB-C, means you're dependant on dongles. And the USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports on these MacBook pros seem to be so bleeding edge, that their reliability with adapters and connectors varies widely.

With so many MacBook Pro users to placate, I've tried most brands of dongles, and all at some point are flaky. THAT is the problem. So I'm not talking about disliking the necessity of dongles (although it is a very inelegant solution), I'm talking about monitor and network connections that just aren't reliable.

In terms of performance, the new MacBook pros are okay, but really not noticeably better for a regular user than any Mac bought in the last couple of years. Most of my users have now gotten used to their MacBook Pros, but they don't particularly like them (some still detest them), their so-so performance and their foibles have just become the new normal.

You've just nailed my own experience and the shared sentiment in my office. Thank you.

What about the iMac??? Why isn't anyone talking about it? Mine just died after nursing it along for 9 months waiting for a freaking update and yet all I hear about is a MBP. FRUSTRATED!!
They might do a silent update around WWDC for iMac. Kaby Lake and Radeon RX 560 / 570 variants. iMac 21.5" could have a dGPU once again. Based on RX 550.

At WWDC they could do a sneak peak of iMac Pro, available same time with macOS 10.13 around late October. They'll focus on Pro products at this WWDC; iPad Pro, MBP and iMac Pro (preview) and maybe Pro apps too.

Not a hope, Apple has long left the serious professional space, Apple is solely about attracting the well heeled consumer. Even by Apple's own numbers there are so few utilising the Mac professionally, small wonder really...

Apple only values one thing $$$$, it may very well desperately want the kudos and halo effect that professionals bring to the table, equally Apple is clearly just churning out consumer focused hardware, albeit very well executed. Not even going to watch the upcoming Keynote, simply sick & tired of listening to Tim Cook & Co procrastinating on the Mac and Apple's professional users, it's just insulting. Apple want's my individual & business custom back Apple needs to stop talking & deliver...

Q-6

If you don't watch the upcoming keynote, how will you stay on top of Emoji and sticker development? This is serious leading edge tech ....... Welcome to Tim Cooks Apple..... where $$$$$$$$$ comes first. Apple ditched pros a long time ago.

I remember the good old days, before the Cook era, new Macs would get upgrades but the price would remain the same.

These days, new Macs come with less but cost a hell of a lot more. This is what happens when a bean counter becomes the CEO.

Guys, please start looking elsewhere for your needs. Please don't allow Apple to think they can rip consumers off this easily. Reject overpricing of crappy hardware. macOS just isn't worth the price you pay.

I seriously doubt we will see a refresh so soon, they haven't even removed the "new" tag under MacBook Pro in their page, and I think it is the product who needs a refresh the least.....

iMac
Mac Mini
MacBook
MacBook Air (if we ever see one again)
Mac Pro (probably not till 2018)
iPad / Pro
iPod touch (if we ever see one again)

Those are the one in need of an update, then a new MacBook Pro would make sense...

You guys are incredible. If apple doesn't update you complain. If apple does update, you complain. You might be happier with a windows machine.

Because the current Macbook Pro and Mac Pro situations don't lead to pessimism...

How about a powerful, decently priced machine?

Was a time I would have unreservedly recommended the Mac, today I pretty much discount it, becoming more and more compromised fashion orientated devices...

I'm with you, still using my 2011 iMac (a.k.a. a sad 5-year old PC, according to Phil Schiller).

I managed to spruce it up with an SSD and 32GB of RAM, but it's certainly showing its age (GPU etc).

The 5K iMac, appealing as its screen might be, never appealed to me as a futureproof upgrade. The price for a decent configuration and inability to use it as an external display are deal breakers.

I'm frustrated and really tired of waiting.

I've actually been impressed with the battery life as the point updates kept rolling out for OSX

Still getting terrible battery life unfortunately. I managed to use Sketch on my (fully charged) MBP for about 2.5h on the plane last week (with one brightness level below max) before the battery dwindled to 5% :(

Sounds like you're looking for a Windows machine. You're not going to get either of those things from Apple purely because Tim Cook is not interested in giving you value for money.

You mean a Hackintosh build? I'd pay really good money for one with a Thunderbolt 2 equipped MOBO.
