janstett said:Got mine... But I noticed a few interesting things...
(1) How do you activate the optical digital output? Specifically for Dolby Digital on DVD playback.
(2) There is a "High Defnition" tab in the DVD player settings. Anybody know anything about this? Is it for upconversion, or is it for HD-DVD? I think this has been put in for the next Mac Mini as a media center...
UPDATE: It appears that they shipped the first indication of HD-DVD. On this tab, they list:
- For Standard Def
- actual height
- disc default
- For High Def
- actual size
- 720p
- 1080i
Hybrid Discs:
Play
- Standard Def
- High Def
- Always Ask
This sounds like HD-DVD to me, although no discs are out yet and I thought we need a new drive. Anybody have any thoughts on this?
UPDATE 2:
Just checked my Mac Mini which has been updated to 10.4.5. The DVD player is the same version (4.6.5) but the HD stuff is completely missing. Did Apple accidentally let something out of the bag? I did notice that one of the two formats (HD-DVD or BluRay) was supposed to launch this week. Perhaps Apple's surprise is that HD-DVD works out of the box on the new Intel products, maybe we all have HD-DVD drives?
One more question -- should I expect PPC Toast to work on this thing?
ehurtley said:No, PPC Toast should not work. You'll probably have to wait for an update. (Because it deals directly with the hardware, it shouldn't be able to work. Note I'm not outright saying no, though. I'll let you know for sure on Friday when my MBP arrives.)
thefunkymunky said:Just to confirm. Toast 7 does work OK on Intel-based Macs via Rosetta. Tried it on my Intel iMac.🙂

Take note of estimated delivery date... INTERESTING! I don't mind! 😀
jacobj said:It refers to discs burned using DVD Studio pro, which will prbably in turn be for films made in Final Cut Pro HD, Final Cut Express HD or iMove HD. So I don't think this anything to do with the format wars.
Legacy said:Am I right in saying that (apart from under PowerPC apps), the MacBook Pro in 'energy saver mode' is still going to be faster than the PowerBook G4 on full speed.
So far most people have been testing the system with average settings.
I would really like it if someone could find out the MAXIMUM REAL BATTERY CAPACITY, as in:
- Display on lowest setting
- Best energy saver mode
- Airport and Bluetooth turned off
BUT making sure that the computer is in use during all periods of time.
NB: With these settings I get 5 hours from the iBook G4 12"

ekenny said:Wow seriously? Mine has been on "shipping exception" / Picked up in Shanghai for about 24 hours. I was hoping to get it on Friday or Saturday, but looks like it wont be till Monday or Tuesday now.
macbook123 said:I wonder if we'd be able to pick it up from our local Fedex place on Saturday, in case it doesn't make there in time for tomorrow's delivery. Called fedex and the person I spoke to said "only if the package is not in a large container", whatever that means...
the large container means that the container they where shipped in the dimentions are so they can fit 3 wide and about 8 deep. if you watched castaway the big things on that plane where containers at each stop the containers are emptyed out and re loaded un less they are full of cargo going to one destination then when they get to the destination they are re containerized to fit one wide and 2 deep in the short trailers and 4 deep in the long trailers. it helps cut down on the load and unload times.ekenny said:Not sure about the "large container" bit either.
