After a week with the retina display, my old iPad's screen looks ancient.
I can see a grid in between the pixels from a foot away. It's like looking at it though a screen door.

If you're not convinced the iPad 3 is good enough to warrant an upgrade, fine. But you don't know what you're missing in the new display.
It's night and day.

This is to open a healthy debate. Please remember, its not to hurt anyone who doesn't agree with me or who are apple fanboy/ fangirl. Your thoughts are highly appreciated :)

1. Same design but fatter and heavier - 50 g heavier than iPad 2 and 30 g lighter than iPad. What a retrograde style, amazing !!!

2. 4G won't work outside US - so its an incomplete 4G device but you have to pay same price even you get 3G only speed in your country!

3. Battery is huge which takes more time to charge. The feature (4G) that is backed up by this huge battery does'nt work in Europe. So you carry extra weight (and spend more time and electricity) for nothing !

4. Its dual-core (tricky) processor, anyway. Cant be as fast as quad-core for example, Tegra 3.

5. Camera in most cases is useless but nice to have. You still fight in low light conditions. May be Apple is hoping someone will bring flash with 30-pin connector for iPad. They (want to make us) love to carry end numbers of accessories

6. Front camera is s(h)ame. Apple dont want someone see blackheads on your face!

6. Give me one example of tablet with mono (single) speakers. iPad really stands out here!

7. Old cases (that are body-fitting) becomes obselote.

8. Adding a portfolio case to new ipad becomes almost the same weight as ultrabook, for example, MBA 11.

9. Retina Display is gorgeous but not always practical requirement. The texts will become sharper but anyway you have to zoom to avoid eye strain for reading small texts (and large texts are pretty readable), same what you do with iPad 2. Now, app size is increasing and Apply s(t)ick to 64 GB at most.

10. If you are business people (do work with office files, send email with multiple attachments and transfer files between other devices very often), you still have to rely on other tablet/PC.

11. Still no higher (external) storage option

12. Most videos and picture need to be scaled up

13. Low brightness and contrast (than iPad 2)

14. Low-heat Cooking plate

15. Amount of pluses are much less than the what you compromise for retina display.

Dumbest post of the day!

What a nice try to disqualify an legitimate utterance of an opinion...

My position is that if you don't want the new iPad don't buy one. if you want one, then get one.

There's lots of posts here of very satisfied users and given that apple sold millions of them in a short time period indicates that there were more reasons to buy them then not.

Don't like it, don't buy it. Simple :)

The first sentence is just an repeating mantra, devoid of any real meaningfulness.

The second paragraph is not necessarily true: Of course there can be - and I would certainly think there are - many other reasons (also irrational ones) why so many persons buy the new iPad than the rational one that the poster states.

Such a quick answer - a second post - in this kind of thread is quite revealing. In addition, written by a moderator, the post is IMO in the borderland of such an intolerance of critique that I think weaken the forum. And finally: The Jobs' quote is pathetic: It has no relevance to the thread, but is a kind of "accessory" that is added for reasons unknown to others, and perhaps not knowing this is a good thing.

And just to make it clear: This post of mine here doesn't necessarily mean that I agree with what the OP writes, but it means that I think it is of vital importance that such a post can be received without such a negative and destructive attitude, and even from one person who is moderator of this forum.

If you don't own an iPad, then the iPad 3 is for you.

If you own an iPad 1, then the iPad 3 is a good upgrade.

If you own the iPad 2, I don't think you need the iPad 3. The iPad 2 is still better than most other tablets. Depends what you do. I travel, don't play games, don't take pictures. The lighter weight and quicker charging of the iPad 2 are important for frequent flyers like myself.

1. 50 grams = .11 pounds, it is not a significant increase whatsoever. And if they did not increase weight by doubling the capacity of the battery, everyone would be complaining about poor battery life. 5 hours less battery life is far worse than 50 grams of additional weight.

2. You can't reasonably expect every 4G network to be supported on one chip at this point in time. Apple does not employ magicians. Their alternatives would be to release far more variations of the new iPad or to include multiple 4G chips on every iPad, neither of which is reasonable.

3. I'm sorry that the laws of physics do not meet your standards, it is only logical that a battery with more capacity would take longer to charge.

4. Why do you need a quad core processor in the iPad? The iPad 3 runs everything butter smooth. Android may need a quad core processor to offset the fact that it is unoptimized for any specific device, but the same does not apply to the iPad. The quad core GPU is an understandable and required upgrade considering it now needs to push 4x the resolution, but the kind of stuff the processor handles has been left unchanged.

5. Cameras in a tablet are useless regardless of how good they are.

6. While I agree the face time camera could be better, it is fine the way it is. High quality video streaming would take alot of bandwidth, and would likely drop down to a lower resolution anyway considering the iPad is wireless.

7. except 90% + cases still work fine. I can't beleive you're arguing that some cases are obsolete, despite apple purposely leaving the design mostly unchanged to ensure most cases DON'T become obsolete.

8. Ok... you're just repeating point #1.

9. Ok, so the retina display is not a practical requirement but an HD face time camera and 50g weight difference is?

10. If you are doing serious text editing on any tablet you need to rethink your strategy.

11. Wouldn't this fall under your arguement that external accessories are annoying? How much space do you need on a tablet that 64GB is not enough for you? I have a 16GB iPad and I feel like im never going to use all 16GB.

12. Obviously, since the screen is much higher resolution. 1080P video still looks amazing despite being upscaled.

13. My iPad 3 is brighter than my iPad 2.

14. My iPad 3 gets slightly warm when playing games, and does not heat up at all while doing anything else.

15. this isnt even a reason.

Why do people keep saying, "lol he can't afford it so he's trying to justify his iPad 2!! *troll face*"

If someone can spend at least $500 on an iPad 2, what makes you think that person can't spend a fraction of that price to upgrade?

The ignorance!!

Meh, i'm not a fanboy, i'm just bored and feel like feeding the hate.

1. Same design but fatter and heavier - 50 g heavier than iPad 2 and 30 g lighter than iPad. What a retrograde style, amazing !!!

50g is a big deal to you? Really? As the old saying goes, man the f//k up! Go to the toilet before you use the new iPad, then your chair wont notice the weight difference.

2. 4G won't work outside US - so its an incomplete 4G device but you have to pay same price even you get 3G only speed in your country!

I have the wifi model and i had the wifi model iPad 2, so do not care about how many G's i'm missing.

3. Battery is huge which takes more time to charge. The feature (4G) that is backed up by this huge battery does'nt work in Europe. So you carry extra weight (and spend more time and electricity) for nothing !

You do realise battery power is also used by other features of the new iPad, such as powering the screen and making the magic happen. The bigger battery means this magic happens longer..

4. Its dual-core (tricky) processor, anyway. Cant be as fast as quad-core for example, Tegra 3.

Don't use a quad-core device then, speed is relative, if you don't use faster things then your slower thing wont feel any slower.

5. Camera in most cases is useless but nice to have. You still fight in low light conditions. May be Apple is hoping someone will bring flash with 30-pin connector for iPad. They (want to make us) love to carry end numbers of accessories

Never used the camera, so doesn't affect me.

6. Front camera is s(h)ame. Apple dont want someone see blackheads on your face!

See above. Although this is mainly my public service to my friends. Phone calls are the only times they don't have to actually look at my ugly mug whilst they (reluctantly) communicate with me..

6. Give me one example of tablet with mono (single) speakers. iPad really stands out here!

Headphones ftw, woot!!!one

7. Old cases (that are body-fitting) becomes obselote.

Don't use a case and i don't rub it in sand, so don't need a case.

8. Adding a portfolio case to new ipad becomes almost the same weight as ultrabook, for example, MBA 11.

wtf has this go to do with anything? You're just making stuff up now for the sake of it. Strapping a monkey to the back of a cat will make it weight about the same as a small dog. Same difference really.

Maybe other peoples eyes are better than yours and therefore do not get eye strain from reading it? I'm personally finding it easier to read without having to zoom in where i would with the iPad 2.

10. If you are business people (do work with office files, send email with multiple attachments and transfer files between other devices very often), you still have to rely on other tablet/PC.

Dammit, best change career then!

11. Still no higher (external) storage option

My 32gb New iPad has more storage than my old 16gb iPad 2, so no need for an external option.

12. Most videos and picture need to be scaled up

They don't *need* to be, it would be nicer, yes, but i'm sure i'll get by without. Just. The razor blade is on standby..

13. Low brightness and contrast (than iPad 2)

But higher resolution screen, which, as a user that has his brightness set to 50% or below, is more pleased with.

14. Low-heat Cooking plate

I tried cooking an egg on mine, but nothing happened? But then it gets no warmer than the 2, so i wasn't expecting much..

15. Amount of pluses are much less than the what you compromise for retina display.

I just think you're just a bit annoyed that the new one is better than the old one. Shame. Enjoy your hating :)

1. 50 grams = .11 pounds, it is not a significant increase whatsoever.

For most people it is a very noticeable difference.

I'm currently pondering whether to upgrade my iPad 1 to version 2 or 3. So I took a look at both in my local Apple store and two things surprised me: The weight difference and how difficult it was to spot the difference between the screens. Perhaps the advantages of the Retina display are more apparent in games but frankly I struggled to see the difference.

The iPad 3 is though a technological feat, no question about it.

I returned the new ipad after a couple of days and decided to stick to my 2.

Had I already sold my 2 I probably would have stayed with the 3. However, the extra 'bulk' although only small annoyed me. It is noticeable whatever a lot of posters on this forum try to pretend otherwise! If they don't notice it then good for them.

The screen was a bit better better but I was at a loss to see where the WOW factor was coming from. I wonder if some people were so desperate to have the so called retina display on an ipad that they would have raved about it whatever it looked like.

Now I see a few other little gremlins in the new ipad popping up so maybe a good idea to stick to the well sorted ipad 2!!

Why do people do this!? If you have 15 reasons, I repeat, 15 reasons why "you" wouldn't upgrade do you really need to post it on a public forum.

That is so true!

My wife is always saying 'why do you need ... (the latest new piece of Apple kit)' and I can honestly only reply 'because I want it!

The only time in all the years I have been buying Apple kit that I have been disappointed and returned the product has been this latest ipad.

However, the 'because I want it' afflication is still working I am now beginning to believe the screen looks a whole lot better than the one on my ipad 2 every time I visit my local Apple store and I just know this feeling will build and I wiil have another 3 before too long. C'est la vie.

What about DICTATION? Only works on new iPad not iPad 2...

DICTATION
..
Write an email. Send a text. Search the web. Or create a note. And do it all with only your voice. Instead of typing, tap the microphone icon on the keyboard. Then say what you want to say while your iPad listens. Tap Done and, just like that, your spoken words become written words. Dictation also works with third-party apps, so you can do things like update your Facebook status or share a thought on your Twitter feed.

Obvious troll is, well, obvious.

Reading some of the posts on the apple centric blog sites seems to highlight the worldwide problem that I like to call early adopters (or most likely, jealous bastard can't afford one so will make **** up about it) munchausen's syndrome.

Typified by comments such as:

It overheats and I can fry eggs on it
There are hundreds of dead pixels
It's yellow
It's pink
Light bleeds
The battery runs out in 5 minutes
The wifi reception seems weaker
it uses more data
Etc etc.

Yes, its bid deal when ipad 2 is already heavy. Are'nt we supposed to get lighter with upgrade

Headphones ftw, woot!!!one

Well, thats the only alternative you have!!!

Now I have an excuse, sorry - "WTF"

My 32gb New iPad has more storage than my old 16gb iPad 2, so no need for an external option.

Wait and see....

But higher resolution screen, which, as a user that has his brightness set to 50% or below, is more pleased with.

I do believe that you are a troll and do not even own an iPad 2 let alone purchased a new iPad. If you did then it pity you, you should get yourself to the gym before little girls beat you unmercifully.

You can roam outside the USA and still get 4G (HSPA+ or DC-HSPA+) but not LTE.

what a h:apple:s!

You only need one reason to upgrade to the new iPad from any device: retina display. It's all about that retina, retina, retina display.
