just thought id give my opinions:

yes there is a weight gain but its so small its hardly worth mentioning, and as for the extra half a milimetre depth, thats really just an argument people use that can't afford the new one, i mean, come on, half a milimetre??

Weight gain is noticeable when you compare it with iPad 2 in hand. Moreover, when iPad 2 is already heavy, weight gain is not a clever choice (well Apple had no other option, I guess)

yes the screen is gorgeous but from what I hear having it on high brightness can drain the battery extremely fast, and it takes twice as long to charge it. But again, this only really matters to you if you are away from an outlet for hours on end, im sure many people, myself included, justp lug their ipad in at night or when it needs it, and manage perfectly well with that.

The screen is gorgeous in terms of resolution. Colour saturation and brightness are still pretty below than any AMOLED / alike screen.

So where do i stand in this whole debate?

You know where you stand, right - ask yourself why couldn't you justify yourself to upgrade when you can afford? Some of the reasons for sure are behind points made by me :p

Everyone has their reasons whether you agree with them or not.

For me it was the Retina display. To say that I read a lot would be an understatement so anything that helps with readability, I'm all for it. Being that I still say that reading from e-ink is arguably better, the text quality on the iPad 3, whether it's psychological or real, seems easier on my eyes than reading comparable text on my iPad 2.

The only downside to the iPad 3 is if I'm dozing off laying down with the tablet in the air, losing consciousness while the iPad hits me in the face is more painful than with a Kindle 3.

Nice comments, to the point. BTW, I have to add the downside you mentioned , ok, 15 + 1 :D

This is the first time I have seen a thread on MR with such a high number of low ratings. People must really hate the OP.

I guess those are all rational reasons.

I have both - I upgraded and gave the 2 to my wife. Its fine for her, she can't really tell the difference.

For me, when I pick up the 2, the crispness and clarity of the retina display is so obvious. Just for the display, its a worthwhile upgrade, but admittedly not for everyone.

I don't know in which world do you live..well..I know iFans world :p

You can always thumbs down without having any knowledege...

If you would do some research instead of trolling in a forum, you'll see -

There is a heat issues everyone agrees who own new iPad and have ability to compare new iPad with iPad 2 and other tablets. Major tech sites confirmed that.

Same is with yellow tint - you will find hundreds of YouTube videos and review ( pocket now, verge etc.) showing yellow new iPad screen. Little knowledge is dangerous - you only know yellow screen is only caused by adhesive. Come on, wake up!!!

I don't want to waste more time here, each point made here have more than once mentioned and experienced by experts who are not biased. They are silly because they find issues with iDevice.

No one cares whether you care or not. But they will remain as issues anyway, though it's not difficult to bypass those issues for iFans like you even they are bothering.

Actually, if anyone is trolling, it's you. PC World, MacWorld, The Verge, C|NET, etc have all tested the new iPad against other tablets and found NO SIGNIFICANT HEATING ISSUES. I'll even provide links to the reports (something you never did) - that's called RESEARCH:

C|NET: New iPad's Heat a Non-Issue

Not So Hot: New iPad Heat Levels Comparable to Android Tablets (PC World

New iPad Temperature Comparison (The Verge)

Also, you point out YouTube sites as your "proof" of widespread issues with yellow screens. Yet you (and other who share your opinion) seem to be completely ignorant of the fact that if it was a big an issue as you claim, sites such as C|NET, PC World, etc would be all over the story and chomping at the bit to declare the end of Apple. The sales figures and customer satisfaction results speak far louder than your baseless claims.

This is to open a healthy debate. Please remember, its not to hurt anyone who doesn't agree with me or who are apple fanboy/ fangirl. Your thoughts are highly appreciated :)

As someone who went through an ipad 1, 2, and chose the 3 - after testing the 1 and 2 for about a week each, I will respond in general and say you are incorrect overall, but will respond to each point:

1. Same design but fatter and heavier - 50 g heavier than iPad 2 and 30 g lighter than iPad. What a retrograde style, amazing !!!

Heavier battery = heavier weight. Blame the battery manufacturers for not having better technology...Captain Picard's tools are not yet available.

2. 4G won't work outside US - so its an incomplete 4G device but you have to pay same price even you get 3G only speed in your country!

My whole area is 4G, and since I don't travel much outside the US, this is not an issue, and would be for most people.

3. Battery is huge which takes more time to charge. The feature (4G) that is backed up by this huge battery does'nt work in Europe. So you carry extra weight (and spend more time and electricity) for nothing !

How do you know that the 4G system will not work in EU in the near future?

4. Its dual-core (tricky) processor, anyway. Cant be as fast as quad-core for example, Tegra 3.

IIRC the ipad 3 is quad-core.

5. Camera in most cases is useless but nice to have. You still fight in low light conditions. May be Apple is hoping someone will bring flash with 30-pin connector for iPad. They (want to make us) love to carry end numbers of accessories

Flat-out wrong. The ipad camera takes FAR better pics than my kodak digital camera, my blackberry bold (which is also 5 MP), and my Canon Elph. The ipad camera is superb, IMO, FAR superior to the one on the ipad 2.

6. Front camera is s(h)ame. Apple dont want someone see blackheads on your face!

Not sure about that claim, but who cares - its for video phone calls, not for highly detailed pictures like on the back one.

6. Give me one example of tablet with mono (single) speakers. iPad really stands out here!

Am perfectly happy using the external speaker as is, it works fine for me for the video streaming. The thin shape of the ipad disallows woofers or other types of speakers which require more depth, so having stereo on such a thin device would be pointless. If you want better sound quality, use the headphones.

7. Old cases (that are body-fitting) becomes obselote.

You claimed above the progressing forward with improved technology is important, but now you attack apple for doing that. Future iterations of the ipad will no doubt change its shape further. You're under no obligation to purchase future editions requiring new cases.

8. Adding a portfolio case to new ipad becomes almost the same weight as ultrabook, for example, MBA 11.

Not true, I use the Targus Hughes, which is a leather case and while it adds weight, is hardly troublesome. I walk around with it all day long, and it does not bother me at all.

9. Retina Display is gorgeous but not always practical requirement. The texts will become sharper but anyway you have to zoom to avoid eye strain for reading small texts (and large texts are pretty readable), same what you do with iPad 2. Now, app size is increasing and Apply s(t)ick to 64 GB at most.

The reason I opted for a 3, even after realizing how amazing the ipad 2 is, was the screen first, then the processor. I spent alot of time comparing the 2 screens - and there is no comparison. You look at websites like the NY Times, and the difference is astounding.

10. If you are business people (do work with office files, send email with multiple attachments and transfer files between other devices very often), you still have to rely on other tablet/PC.

Hardly, I use superb apps like Goodreader for emailing my clients, and other apps for mailing multiple attachments.

11. Still no higher (external) storage option

If you run out of room, delete excess files you don't need. I have a 64 GB, and if i fill it up then I am not efficiently handling all of its contents correctly.

Bottom line, I thought the ipad 2 was a superb device, and would have kept it had i not walked into an apple store and compared the NY Times site on it to an ipad 3 in the store - it was night and day.

Mind you, the refurb ipad 2/64 GB/wifi for $549 is a steal for an excellent machine, and might be the best overall deal/price-point for all of the ipads, but i am VERY happy with my ipad 3, and would recommend it to anyone seeking a tablet with a top-notch screen and long battery life.

I am not trying to prove they are big issues. They said its not an issue although iPad 3 runs warmer than many tablets (see the statistics on 9to5mac) - bcoz it doesn't make uncomfortable. Well, we love iPad 3 and even it becomes significantly warmer, we have no other options but saying its not that uncomfortable.

Sales figure doesn't tell anything - when you have no better alternative you are stuck with what you have even though it has issues. And customer satisfaction on few groups of people doesn't tell the whole story. I am not telling you that what I wrote is 100 % true. But you can only deny if they are not issues for all.

Don't forget that the iPad 2 is a lot safer in comparison to the new iPad.
Nobody is gonna stab you in order to get your iPad 2.

So because I don't agree with you, I'm trolling? Please.

As for the research you claim I didn't do, it looks like it's you who didn't bother to do any research.

For very a short summary of the Consumer Reports findings, go here.
For a summary of the Repair Labs comparison test of the iPad 2 and the new iPad, go here.
For a summary of the PC World and Wired test of various iOS and Android tablets, go here.

If you don't feel like visiting those links, I'll summarize the info for you: the new iPad does run slightly warmer than the iPad 2 because it has a faster processor, but it is at most a 5-10 degree F increase and does not cause the unit to go up to the whopping 116 degrees F that Consumer Reports first found. Most of the "information" of units getting too hot comes from people posting in forums, not actual lab tests.

I also stand by the rest of my post. Claiming that the fact that some iPad 2 cases will not fit the new iPad is a valid reason for not getting the new version - as the OP stated as one of his 15 reasons - is just plain silly. Under that logic, upgrading from the original iPad to the iPad 2 would have been a stupid thing to do. That was the main thrust of my post - that the OP came up with a list of reasons why he/she doesn't want to get the new iPad. None of them are all that valid, in my opinion, and, this being a public forum, I responded. That's not trolling.

Wrong. I use mine for business all the time. Goodreader lets you send multiple attachments via email.

11. Still no higher (external) storage option.

Wrong again. Seagate makes a wifi external storage HD that works with iPad.

One reason not to upgrade:
Don't have disposable income to spend on such things.

One reason to upgrade:
Have disposable income to spend on such things.

Let me lay it out simple like.

No tablet = buy ipad 3
ipad 1 owner = upgrade to ipad 3
ipad 2 owner = save your money

If you must upgrade from ipad 2 sale it.

How hard was that? To tell you the truth even the ipad 1 still works fine.

You do notice with iPad 2 in hand. And when iPad 2 is already heavy, making it heavier is not a clever choice...well....I guess Apple had no other option to make it lighter than iPad 2

2. 4G won't work outside US - so its an incomplete 4G device but you have to pay same price even you get 3G only speed in your country!

4. It's pretty fast. I agree with you but Apple's claim - faster than Tegra 3 is a lie, ref: watch the ipad keynote

5. The camera is amazing and it's great for listing eBay
I am not saying the camera is bad but could be better with flash (light)

6. Never used it could care less
You don't use that doesn't mean no body use. Many people use and high-res front camera is added advantage, not essential though

6. Love the soundImagine if apple could place another same speaker on opposite side!!!

7. Really? Don't you think so??

8. But half the price Well, by capabilities, its also half the MBA, if not less

9. No zoom needed
I agree with you if its in Landscape mode. In portrait, texts are tiny though readable need to be zoomed unless you have in-built magnifying glass with your eyes:p

I have compared brightness with my iPad 2, the first gen 3 was dull and not as bright however my replacement gen 3 is as bright or brighter, each gen 3 varies.

Sounds like you're trying to justify reasons as to not upgrade.. Does it make you feel better?

Once you work with the new resolution, you can't go back.

I returned my ipad 3 and went back to my ipad 2 without problems.

Yes, the screen crispness for text is better, but at this point, there's not enough content to really take advantage of the retina screen. Give it a year and things will be different.

I'll gladly get the next ipad and by then there will be a much starker difference (with most apps being all HD and taking advantage of the screen).

Unless you watch HD vids on your ipad all the time, I don't really see the urgent need to upgrade at this time. I watch SD movies and TV shows and there wasn't any difference. The 64gig memory wasn't big enough to carry too many of the HD sized movies around on vacation and trips etc.

That means brightness is not consistent amongst iPad 3. My iPad 3 is not as bright as my iPad 2. I have to consider replacement

That's correct big difference in brightness, but if you have a good screen, I would keep it.

First few are legit reasons, the later few also apply to iPad 2, so they aren't really a reason not to upgrade. App sizes are now more of an issue on iPad 2, as apps get bigger but they get no benefit from it.

13. Low brightness and contrast (than iPad 2)

This is just not true. I have an iPad 1 to compare to, which was the same as my iPad 2. The new iPad gets brighter and can be set even dimmer for reading at night. Contrast is similar.

I'm happy right now with my iPad 2. Sure I'd love to get a nice brand new iPad 3 but I just can't see it in my budget just yet. It was a huge shock factor from the iPhone 3G to an iPhone 4 upgrade as the display was just shockingly beautiful and small text was surprisingly legible.

While I no longer have an iPhone as I canceled my AT$T account and hung onto T-Mobile which I've been with for nearly thirteen years, my BlackBerry does my phone calls and texts but I bought a current generation iPod Touch for "on the go" entertainment from movies to various games.

I can only imagine the shock factor on the iPad display which would be wonderful for showing photos captured on my DSLR camera. They look pretty good on my iPad 2 but I know they will look far better on the "New iPad".

I'm not going to live in upgrade denial, I just plainly can't afford the upgrade and I'd rather have a 64GB for such means and HD content is now truly HD for games and apps that support the higher resolution display.

In my case, the upgrade from the first generation to the iPad 2 was more than I realized once games started pushing the extra graphical abilities and many other small details.

I will upgrade sooner or later but my bills come first and once I get what I need in savings, then I will upgrade (and by that time, I'm quite sure most apps will be even further optimized for the third generation iPad).
