You can sell your phone. I sold mu iPhone 4 16gig on ebay in January for $300. I am thinking of selling my 4S now and using my old 3G until the new iPhone comes out.

i can't. I need an unlocked phone and i can almost safely assume that the unlocked 32gig new iphone will be alot more then the 400$ which i might get for the 4s.

Well go on ebay and see. But you said that you can't sell your phone because it is not unlocked. And that is incorrect. You CAN sell your phone even if it is locked. And you might get lucky on ebay and get an unlocked 32 gig 4S for the right price. Especially if it is scratched up a bit.

Ive realized that I dont play that many games on my iphone that take up alot of memory. So the 1GB+ memory hogs have been deleted from my iphone.

I have about 6GB of music, 3GB of other and 5GB available.

Ill probably jump up to 32 gigs for the next iPhone so that I can store more music but for right now, 16 gigs is more then enough for me.

Yeah, I keep hearing great things about Itunes Match or whatever it's called. Problem for me is that a good percentage of the time I'm listening to music I am without signal (subway or beneath street level in gym), so having music stored on the device is a must for me.

But as someone else said, I think I could still manage it. It would just mean not having 15-20 gigs of music on there that I don't have to micro-manage, vs. adding/deleting stuff on a daily basis. Between that and the fact that the 1080 video takes up so much space, it seems like the 32/64 is definitely preferable, if possible, but that you can make the 16 work if that's what you're working with.

iTunes Match doesn't stream music. Once you download the song from iTunes Match it is physically stored on your device until you actually delete it.

I am using 6.9 GB currently. I have 6.7 GB left. But if I were to clean out apps I don't use I would have about 1 GB more.

I probably will go with a 32 GB when I get my next iPhone.

Oh and another factor for me is that I no longer have a laptop (traded from old macbook to a new imac recently), also no ipad, so my iphone is essentially my primary mobile computer.

I could always keep my iphone 4 and spend the extra $ on a used ipad2 instead of upgrading to a 32/64gb iphone 4s. But I think I'll get more bang for my buck with the 4s (camera, Siri, etc).

Sorry but i have to correct you. What i actually said was "So sad. I can't get a new phone as my 4s is unlocked and still on contract so i can't sell it and get a bigger capacity unlocked phone for the same price. "

I'm moving overseas next year and need an unlocked phone i can DEPEND on, and buying a used phone on ebay is risky.

Oh really...? Hmm, very interesting. So essentially it provides you the ability to manage your on-phone music library via cloud storage? That's pretty hand indeed. But at $25/year (I think), would it make more sense to spend the extra $100 for more storage so that you wouldn't need to use iTunes Match? Not to mention the extra storage for pics/video that I don't think Match helps with...

And how does it work over normal data connection? Is it really slow? Like, does it take several minutes to download songs from Match?

----------

Oh and another follow up for anyone, but especially 16 gig users - do you find that when the device is full or close to capacity that the performance suffers, i.e. you experience some lag/sluggishness? Might be another point in favor of more storage space...

Bye Bye

Both my i4 and 4S have been 16 GB. I went with the 32 on my new iPad and am glad I did. I will definitely get a 32 GB i5 or whatever they will call it when it's released. I'm running out of room on my 16.

Can't speak over normal connection as I only download my music over WIFI. I like the Cloud because it allows music at my fingertips, but I may not be in the mood to listen to certain things at certain times so I don't have to worry about having them on the iPhone when they're not needed or wanted. I got about 2 gigs worth of music on my iPhone now.

For me basically if you:
- Have the will (and sometimes the monthly quota $$) to store your music on the cloud via one of the many available services, AND have the connection to support it AND don't care about ratings, playcounts etc so much or at all.
- Only have 1, 2 movies TOPS on your iPhone all the time.
- Like podcasts but keep a few and after you listen to one you delete it right away.
- Have a few small apps.
- Don't care about storing at the same time more than around 1 hour of HD video.
Then I guess 16 GB is enough.

For me none of the above apply so even 32 GB is too cheesy. 64 GB all the way and wished we were in the future where 256 GB were normal.

Now, I've learned to rate music constantly and sync only a smart playlist with the criteria "Rating = 5,4 or NULL". Also I delete podcasts (specially video podcasts) right away after watching, and I'm constantly synching photos and videos to the PC (don't use iCloud Stream because I didn't like it).

Basically, for the 80% of human population, the 16 GB is just fine. Most people I know even buy an iPhone and 6 months later only have 2 or 3 apps installed, so...

Well, I don't really watch/store movies on the iphone, nor do I listen to a lot of podcasts. My primary reason for wanting more than 16 gigs is for music, so I can just dump a bunch on the phone and not have to worry about micro-managing it daily. Also regularly use the camera for pics/vid so obviously the more the better in that department. Also not app crazy, just a few games and garageband, nike gps, a few others.

16GB doesn't seem enough for me, considering how much I add to my phone. I'll probably end up getting a 32GB or 64GB model when the next generation is released.

No , I don't think its enough. I have so much music that I want to put on my iPhone 4S but there's not even enough space on it for that.

16GB owner here.
Currently jailbroken with a few tweaks.
Photos =0.01GB
Audio=2.9GB
Other=0.77GB
Apps=1.79GB
Free=8.2GB

If I do take a lot of photos, they are usually taken off as soon as I connect to my Mac.
Apps, those on my phone are my most used, and even some of them I could probably get rid of,redownloading on the rare occasions I actually need them.
Music equals 476 songs, probably half of them are there for my kids to listen to in the car.
Never really bothered with video, either watching or recording.

TBH I use it mainly as
a) browser
b)phone
c) messaging

I fill my 32GB so much I don't think I would be able to cope with a 16GB. One thing I always do to try to give me some more space is to have iTunes convert my library to 128kbps when it syncs my music. That way I don't really notice a quality difference when I play it through the built-in speaker (or ever really), and I save some space since those 192+ bit rate songs take up a plenty more GBs

I bought the 16GB 4S with the intent of using GMusic and iTunes match during my runs. I figured it wasn't an issue with space since my apps only take up about 5GB; this should leave plenty for photo and video. Since AT&T started the throttling thing with at 3GB I have been slightly more constrained. I am always pretty close to the mark. I haven't run into issues YET, but I sure wish I had opted for more storage. Without the streaming I would probably be hovering right around 1.5GB a month as I have wifi (almost) everywhere I spend much time.

An extra $200 is cheaper than paying a $10 overage each month over the life of the contract. It seems like a no-brainer to me now, but I guess it didn't back then. Ah well, as they say, hindsight is 20/20, right?

Hmm, good tip on the audio conversion, I'll have to check that out. Is that an option in iTunes when the phone is plugged in? And it still sounds good when played through headphones? How much less space does it take on average, would you guess? Like if I have a gig of music at 192+, how much space do you think it would take up at 128? .5 gigs? .6 gigs?

Just wondering, if the impact is that big, it would make having a 16 gig version much more manageable...

I definitely need to upgrade to 32. I actually subscribed to iTunes Match, so storage for music isn't much of a problem for me now.

But I have several apps and games that are around a gigabyte or around half a gig, so I only have about 1GB of space left. I really consider it totally full though, since app updates need a bit of room to download before they replace the updating app.

Just curious, but do you find the phone gets sluggish at all when it's totally full (or almost totally full)?

x = length of song (in seconds)
y = bitrate (in kilobits per second)
z = resultant file size (in kilobytes)

(x * y) / 8
