I know this is fairly subjective
It's completely subjective. There are plenty of opinions in existing threads on all variations of the "Is X enough?" topic if you want random opinions. Whether any capacity is enough for you depends on how you use your phone. Polling others won't help you unless your usage is going to be similar. I have 22GB free on my 64GB 4s. YMMV as with any subjective matter.

If not for iTunes Match then 16gb definitely would not be enough. I like to have access to all my music (50GB). I also have aboiut 10GB of pictures that I sync to my phone. Without that, 16gb would probably be enough (again with using itunes match). I always get a 32gb also, good selling point when you resell it every year to upgrade.

It is never enough. Even iTunes in the cloud, you always need more space.
Games occupy 500 MB or 1 GB, or more.
Pictures and Videos recorded with the iPhone take a lot of space also.
The iPhone starts to work slowly once you reach maximum capacity.
But at the end it is just what you can afford and really need.

I really dont use my phone for music as i have my external hdd at work for that.

I use my phone for work(emails, calls, ts, etc) and making it work for me (Bills, GPS Nav, etc). I use the phone more than my personal laptop.

Even with 64 GB I would wish I had more storage, which is why I stick to 16 GB anyway. 16 is enough for my apps and most of my music, and I can access all my video files from my server any time by using iFiles.

Just go with 32GB...dont really have to worry about space.

If your asking/having doubts about 16GB...you should probably go up.

I know this was directed at 16GB owners, but I've got over 10GB of apps, don't even get me started on music. So to answer your question, 32GB feels cramped to me.

When I had iPhone 4 32GB I felt need to fill it out to justify extra price I paid for it. Now I got 16GB and its perfect for my needs. However extra space was not major factor in decision to get 16GB. I was extremely disappointed when I sold my 32GB iPhone 4 few weeks after 4S came out for the same price my wife's 16GB sold one week before 4S release. Both phones were in like new condition and both had boxes and unused accessories.

I've got a 64 gig 4S and that's still not enough space. But when you're cramped for space, there's always a way around it. Use Pandora and Netflix. Only keep music you listen to all the time.

I remember before I jumped on the iPhone bandwagon having an 8 gig Touch. Man, oh man, was that horrible.

Hmm, good tip on the audio conversion, I'll have to check that out. Is that an option in iTunes when the phone is plugged in? And it still sounds good when played through headphones? How much less space does it take on average, would you guess? Like if I have a gig of music at 192+, how much space do you think it would take up at 128? .5 gigs? .6 gigs?

Just wondering, if the impact is that big, it would make having a 16 gig version much more manageable...

On the main screen when you select your iPhone in iTunes, on the bottom it says the option "Convert higher bit rate songs to: " and there are a few choices. iTunes should automatically show you how much storage will be impacted on the bottom, color coded bar

For me? 32g photos and music. Nuff said. Depends on your preferences. 64g iPad. Keep more stuff on my phone because it's always with me and with slow Internet speeds, cloud is not an option.

As long as someone isn't a complete pack-rat with their music, photos, etc 16gb is more than enough.

I don't think having a 20+ gig music collection is being a packrat, necessarily, and neither does Apple - remember, they sell 250 gb ipods. So for people who no longer carry an ipod but use their phone as both (like me), it seems completely reasonable to want to be able to store as much as possible.

Well I have definitely decided I need more than 16 gigs. Took a closer look at my current 32gb iphone 4, and I've only got 6 free gigs. That's about 15 gigs of music, a few hundred pics, and a few short 720p video, plus the apps. Not too crazy app heavy, a few 100MB apps/games, garageband, but I guess most of it is pics/music. Considering the iphone 4s' 8 megapixels and 1080 will take up even more space, I do think >16gb will make a big difference in the long run in the day to day use of the phone.

Found a local guy selling a "new" black 64gb 4s for $580. Trying to arrange a meet, but if it seems legit I'm going to grab it.

Just curious, but do you find the phone gets sluggish at all when it's totally full (or almost totally full)?

I can't say for sure. I haven't really noticed any sluggishness when it's full, but maybe I'm just not aware of it. If there is, it's pretty minimal. I generally make sure there's always at least 1GB free either way.

I usually had around 4 GB free on my iPhone 4 16 GB. I had like 1,200 photos, a bunch of podcasts, lots of apps, and a few movies/tv shows. Before I would keep around 60 some CDs on my phone but I switched to iTunes Match. Works well enough for me because I am usually listening to podcasts when listening something from the iPhone.

For me, no it really isn't enough... at all... not even close. I'll be getting the 64 GB or higher next time if the option is available.

It's not enough. If you don't put any music on it or movies then it is not too bad. I decided to move all my music to google music and I stream my movies from Netflix

for me 16 Gigs is more then enough.
But i dont use my phone for music and dont store any video..
16GB is more then enough to store my images and personal data

I'm a big geek and I survive off of 16GB. I regularly delete photos I no longer need and cycle applications and only keep movies on my phone that I've either never seen or consider classics. With all that in mind I have 6.6GB of free space left to sit on.

16GB was good up to the 3GS then with the better camera things stared to get tight.
4/4S is 64GB and 3/4 full.
Don't worry anymore about data house keeping, so I won't be going back to a smaller size.

No, it really isn't for me, I had a 64 GB iPod touch before. 16 GB made me think a little and I deleted a lot of music I don't listen to, I know I can select which artists/albums I want to transfer but I needed to free some space on my SSD too. Yesterday I wanted to transfer a film to my iPhone but there wasn't enough space for it:(
