I have a 16gb 4S and it was enough but over the 2 years I've had it I've been slowly whittling away the storage.

When I look at what apps I could delete to free up space everything I don't care about doesn't take up any space (<5 meg). Things that take up a lot of space I don't want to delete.

I'd recommend bigger then 16gb even if 16 is enough just because it might not always be and then you're SOL.

No where near enough space for me. I dont have a whole lot on here either it seems like to me. I have deleted over a gig of music to help create some space, I used dropbox to store all of my photos in the cloud, I am starting to use google play to store my entire music library and before I download an app I check to see how large the app is and if it is really worth it on my phone. I want the 32gb phone but cant see a valid reason to spend $100 more on a measly 16gb increase.

16GB is plenty of space for me. I don't walk around with a library of music on my phone anymore thanks to things like Pandora, SiriusXM & iTunes Radio. I play a handful of games and use my main apps. I don't keep junk apps that I don't use on my phone. You'd be surprised how much a 16GB iPhone can hold in terms of photos and videos (home movies).

my wife has a 16gb iPhone 5.
up from the 8gb 3GS

She was down toy 1mb the other day and couldn't take a photo. She doesn't have lots of apps or music. But taking photos of kids and video with 1080 takes up lots of space.

I was SHOCKED when the 5S came out and didn't bump the base to 32GB.

I have a 32GB for work...they won't allow us to get a 64GB.
I had 1.7 gb free the other day and needed to dump some apps. and remove music videos.

You got it right. 1080p of video, takes approximately 8-12 Gbs for an hour. Of course not everybody is shooting an hour of video (or shooting videos at all) but if you take a lot of videos they can add up (then people will say "oh just drop 'em on the Mac/PC every night")…
However at the end of the day with a good camera like the one sported on the iPhone I just wonder 16 GB, minus what iOS gobbles by default, minus 10 GB of space for 1 hour long shoot of 1080p video… then we'd be left with what… 1 GB? 2 GB? Enough to get a lot of small apps but no room for music or anything else.

Of course cloud services are great, but not everybody lives in US/England/Holland/etc where you get a real 4G signal and can easily use a cloud service. In my country we have 3G still and it's a total scam (more like dial-up speeds on mobile).

So it depends on the use, hence I disagree with this

Either you know how to manage storage space, or you don't.

Because I know how to manage storage, but 16 GB will never be enough for my needs. It's not a "solution for all users" scenario.
Most people at work have a 16 GB one but they don't shoot videos or many photos and they mainly use it for twitter/facebook/instagram/whatsapp, and they have 20 or 30 songs on it.

My wife is completely out of space, can't even do iCloud backups. I have a 32GB but even that is kinda small for me. My next iPhone will probably be the 64 or if there is a 128, a 128.

I just exchanged my 16 GB for a 32 GB after having it for only ONE DAY, I noticed that the default Apple apps were alone like 3 GB worth! So I had like 4.8 GB left and all I added was 24 songs and like 20 apps! Plus 220 pictures from the photostream from my previous phone.

That sealed my decision to get a 32 GB.

16gb is more than enough for me

16gb is plenty of storage for me. I'm not an app wheezer, or a gb hoarder. I dont take a billion pictures a day of the same piece of crap car, I dont download applications by the dozen, I dont transfer too much music on my device, and I dont require much from my 5S 16gb. It's an iPhone. It will be mint condition till the day I get rid of it. I'm not a gb muncher, I'm human.

16 gb is more than enough.

Enough for me, thank apple for itunes radio. Thats what i mostly use. I only have about a hundred songs on my phone. Gaming just mainstream games like real racing 3, poker, and soccer. I have garageband, iphoto, imovie and other not so obvious apps.

Still have Bout 8 free gigs.

my iPhone is a phone and not a media center, so I still have 2-3 gb left on my 16 gb iPhone

I have an 8 GB iPhone 4. ITS NOT ENOUGH! I have some where around 50 MB left right now. But I did find that if you back up to icloud then wipe your phone back to factory settings and then restore the back up you can end up with an extra GB. I think it's my phone keeping stuff I delete form some where maybe photos I'm not to sure. But if you need space you should try it.

Most people I see with storage problems don't manage, organize, or delete anything. They try to shove their entire digital self in there. Every photo, video, song, and app they've ever collected over the past however many years. Doesn't matter if it's 15 pictures of the same scene and 13 of them are blurry, or if they have 147 apps installed but can only name 10 off the top of their head. They have the guy at the store setup and transfer everything, and they're on their way.

These are the kinds of people that come to me and ask why won't the App Store let me download anything? Why can't I update iOS? I have to tell them you're gonna have to delete some stuff to make room, and uh oh. That's when they look at me like a deer in the headlights.

Some people have never heard of the "Cloud". Some people don't know how to transfer anything off their phone, how to connect it to a computer, or just the fact all their Apps can be re-downloaded. Most of them don't care to know either. In their mind, all they're standing there thinking is "Man, I'm cutting it close and I don't have a clue what this guy is talking about. Next time, I just need more space to continue my habits."

So far it's enough for me. On my iPhone 5 I have 5.5GB free still but maybe looking at a 32GB next time I upgrade to have all my music on the go.

This is how I feel, there's no reason whatsoever for me to have movies and or 3000 songs on a freaking phone! I barely listen to the 275 I do have on my phone. 16gb is perfect for me.

I don't think anyone watches movies on iPhones or store them on the phone for that matter.

The pics alone can eat up the memory.

This is a stupid debate as there is no right or wrong answer. 16gb is enough for those that buy 16gb devices and not enough for those that buy a higher storage device.

It all depends on user preferences. If you run multiple apps and games that are quite large then it won't be enough. If it's just junk, get iphoneclean and free up some space.

Nope :( I have 1.5 gbs left. And only about half of the music that I actually listen to fits on the phone. I'm definitely getting the 32gb next year when I can upgrade.

Wow what a waste.... You could have saved that 16 GB by buying a flip phone.

I have a flip phone, but the iPhone serves other purposes other than being a social media device. If you need to use it to consume media, a tablet is a much better choice. Maybe you should discover media streaming and 4G connectivity instead of wasting your 16 GB.

I never use social media. You don't need space to consume social media.

The pictures video and podcasts can eat up real quick. Yeah I *discovered* that my phone actually has 4G LTE!! What a surprise. Just need to discover if someone will pay for it when I go over 2 GB.
