The 9th Gen Intel CPU with hardware vulnerabilities is a hair in the soup.

Those hardware vulnerabilities really only matter for multi-user server environments though. Doesn't really matter on single-user laptops.

To leak data across processes via things like Spectre takes a LOT of processor just to leak a few bits.

Given that, Intel really needs to step up and get their 45watt mobile 10nm processors out and into these machines ASAP. They at least have AVX-512.

Let's talk specs, what's worth the upgrade what's not?

I'm saying no on the CPU

Looking at a 2.3 8 core, 64GB ram, 8gb GFX, 4TB storage.

How do like-for-like prices compare? 16 vs 15?
I feel like this must be a significant price drop for anyone previously opting for the upgrades to 512 (on 6-core) or 1TB (on 8-core) models.

EXACTLY what everyone has been asking for...and yet some will still complain

No , you are wrong - believe or not - some of us use USB-A ports, some of us use Magic Safe, some of use SD cards, some of us don't see the point of touch bar etc ( and please don;t say me to buy a dongles ) ....At least ( I hope ) they fixed the worst keyboard in the history....

Sorry, but I just have to chuckle at all the folks who a month or two ago bought the 2019 15-incher, with the flawed keyboard, way worse thermal management ... absolutely convinced this one wouldn't come out anytime soon, or be way too expensive.

Now you're kinda stuck with one of the laptops that is part of what will arguably be remembered as one of the worst series of laptop designs Apple ever made.
keyboard is not flawed.

I was sorely tempted a couple of times but something always told me to sit the 2016-19 design out... very glad I did now! Think what strikes me most with this is just how much better value it is than the 15" it replaces!

Great to see Apple innovate and slash prices, producing more value for the consumer. Any word on if this machine has a Wifi6 chip in it, and if so, what chipset?

Not sure about Wifi6 (everymac.com isn't updated yet) but it's a great update from the previous model. 1 of these and an iMac together are cheaper than the new Mac Pro (without a monitor).
I'm considering one of these to replace my 2015 MBP. I'd be fine with the MBA but after checking them out at the Apple Store they just get too hot. Yet if I'm going MBP this is a way better deal than the previous 15" and better than the 13" by far.

Apple, you failed us on the cheese grater but this makes up for it. Thank you for listening to us on the keyboard as well. The only gripe is $400 US to upgrade RAM to 32GB but nothing's perfect.

£5,769.00 for a laptop fully loaded! Are they crazy or just plain greedy. Even £2,799 for entry level is going to be too expensive for most. For that you can buy a 2nd car!

It's 2033. Apple just released iMac Pro XDR Max Lite Ultra Plus 16 inch (no Face ID)
Somebody points out it is more expensive than cheaper laptops.
Internet stops for a minute as everybody rejoice..they never noticed Mac being expensive and "like you can't even play games on it" .
Phone rings in background..."Sir...it's from Sweden..it's about Nobel prize in Economics..."

For heavens sake, that's for 64 GB of RAM and 8TB SSD drive. Would it make you happier if the maximum RAM was 32 or 16 GB, and the maximum SSD drive was 4TB, or 2TB, or 1TB?

No wifi6... I can’t understand it o_O
It’s because the intel chipset doesn’t support WiFi 6 yet. The 9980hk procsssor and chipset are the same as the earlier 2019 15” MacBook Pro.

We weren’t going to get WiFi 6 until the next professor anyway. No surprise here.

This laptop is still worth the purchase though. Even though we know we will get a 10 core WiFi 6 model mid 2020.

I wrote in an earlier thread that Apple no longer makes good hardware, and that that really broke my heart.

This tune changes now. That is a ****ing SICK laptop. Wow! Even the GPU is awesome!

Yeah the chipset is a bit dated, so we get 9th gen CPU's and no WiFi6, but those are fairly small technical hurdles on the logic board, not structural defects with the machine's design.

This looks fantastic.

In 6 months when apple spins a new version with intel’s 10th gen chipsets, this will be a very nice machine.

Not much, LOL. The reason for this 16-incher is the reason why few would want your old one.
Idk, they did somewhat address keyboard issues in 2018 and mine’s a base model so it’s not like the throttling is an issue.
