Safari literally isn’t utilizing ProMotion yet.
And, thinking about myself, I usually scroll, stop, then read. Scroll, stop, then read. For those that like to read the text in motion, like a non-perspective tilted Star Wars intro, I’d say they should return their MBP
Yeah my “pro-ness” is actually a bit different. I work from home on the computer essentially reading, all day. I’m someone who likes the Apple ecosystem and really appreciates 120hz so this has been disappointing.

its inherent in all the new mbp's. some are more sensitive to the ghosting than others imo.
I can see it in your video but don't see it much on mine. I'm 43, and my eye doctor told me at 40 somehow magically most people eyes decline at my age so maybe that why I don't notice it as much but your video shows some kinda issue. Take it to the Genius Bar they have some different level tests that they can run on it to test the display.

I don’t see anything like this either on mine. I have average eyes but doubt that’s an issue.

Is this like a pwm issue? I’m not sure. All I know is that possible some are affected and some go looking for trouble. Dunno. But this issue shouldn’t put people off and if you’re concerned then go to a store and check yourself. Don’t trust rando vids on the internet.

i didnt post that video, but my display has the same issue as what the poster of the video had. this seems to be more of a hardware limitation than it being defective panels. some folks are more sensitive to it than others.

and btw i went into the apple store to confirm if its happening with the demo units and the ghosting issue is present still.

anyhow i logged the case with apple and hoping that there is at least some acknowledgment from them and hopefully fingers crossed its a software issue (doubt it though)

This same discussion occurred with the intel 16" MacBook Pro. People complained of ghosting with that panel too. Its a littler different here because of the proclaimed Promotion display but honestly I think the display is fantastic. Mine doesn't blur like that when I drag window around. It does a tiny bit, but not to where it bothers me and its miles better than the previous 16" intel model.

What I said doesn’t have anything to do with pro-ness, there are LOTS of devices that aren’t good for reading while you’re scrolling, but great for reading once you stop, like many E ink readers. My job and my leisure is split between a Windows work device, an iPad and a Mac and I really couldn’t tell you how readable they are while scrolling. However, once I stop scrolling, they’re all quite readable.

I’m just lucky that I learned that little trick when I was growing up.

Safari bug is still present in 12.1 beta
ah i must be mistaken then. i thought i saw a thread here indicating they resolved the 60hz issue on safari but it looks as though its still a problem. what a bummer. welp, they have 1.5 weeks left to fix or I have no choice but to return it.

Yeah there was a few saying it was fixed initially, but after trying it myself it’s still broken.

Pro motion relates to the refresh rate of the panel (hz). The issue with the panel is a slow response time which relates to how quickly a panel can change from one colour to the next. This cannot be fixed in software and has nothing to do with an app not supporting pro motion. It’s possible Apple are using more than one manufacturer for the panels (historically, some models have used both LG and Samsung panels as an example) which is why some people are noticing it more than others.

If you are not bothered by it, that’s great, but I personally feel that a 3k laptop should have an amazing screen and it hasn’t. If the M1 Air doesn’t suffer from it, the M1 Pro shouldn’t either.

Agreed. But this is definitely application specific. Also when using parallels to run Windows, the panel performs quite well.

At the risk of sounding trite, it’s a hardware issue and not application specific. The OP posted a video of him dragging a window around on the macOS desktop. Parallels probably looks better because Windows has less contrasting colours.

To sum up, this ghosting may be normal for this kind of laptop OR Apple might be used more than one display manufacturer wich one is better than the other. Guess Imma wait for display review and try to get used to it.

Larger panels tend to have slower response times. Most 16 inch laptops do have slow response time nowadays. The MSI creator 17 (mini-led 4K IPS panel) stands as the exception, but that panel has significantly less gamut than the macbooks.

If a laptop is cheap, slow response times are to be expected. If it is > $3k, is labelled 'Pro' and has a 'stunning Liquid Retina XDR display', slow response times are entirely unacceptable.

Yes and no. Apple's marketing of the past 20 years is famous for hyperbole (remember the Touch Bar introduction?), and it's up to you not to fall for it. People need to know where the tech stands, and need to moderate their expectations accordingly. Reviews from extatic youtubers mean nothing, early written reviews from cnet and others do not mean much more. Better wait for the real in-depth reviews with all the unbiased measurements (e.g. notebookcheck).

It's an expensive device and should have a screen with a response time better than a 15 inch Macbook Pro purchased over 6 years ago. It doesn't and I won't embrace an apologist mindset for Apple. We should expect and get quality from them and speak up when we don't. The last generation screen was terrible compared to my 2015 model in relation to response time.

You're right about online reviews. Go straight to the forums once the product is released and you'll get a crystal clear picture of what the product is really like *

More that anything that gets to me about the issues of this screen(ghosting, promotion bugs) is that not a single reviewer has mentioned any of this! They have all gone on about how great the screen is. Apple has them all by the balls. They’re all so afraid to pull a bend-gate scenario and ruin their chance of early product releases.

The ghosting is less noticeable on my 14" compared to my M1 MBA. Promotion probably helps mask it to some degree too. Looking forward to NotebookCheck's Grey-to-Grey measurements.

This panel looks less smeary than every intel 16" I ever saw. Besides the ghosting it's a terrific display.

Glad to hear it is looking better than the Intel 16 Inch. I am off to the Apple Store tomorrow to have a look for myself.

There's no reason to think different manufacturers for Apple screens would be using different specs. There was a lot of talk about that for the 15" screens, which when tracked by lot number, etc, amounted to nothing.

Yes, it's already an expensive device. Including a screen with the good qualities of this one, plus a faster response time, would make it even more expensive. If enough people cared enough to pay the extra, Apple would do it that way. As with the old 17", which is my favorite, they don't because there's not enough demand for that feature at that price.

Same story as the 16 inch from two years ago. Very few reviewers mentioned this - yet this was problem #1 with the machine. Very few reviewers mentioned the overheating with external screens (now solved with Monterey), yet this was problem #2. Reviewers simply don't have the time, nor the incentive - after all they want to make sure that they still receive a review unit for next year's model.

to add, while watching hdr movies i noticed a good amount of judder due to the ghosting issue on my 16" m1 pro. its not only a deficiency for hypothetical gaming but bad for movie viewing as well. still torn if i should keep the mbp or return it and wait for oled mbp rumored to come out next year.

pro tip, switch display mode to HDR (PT.2048) and you will get a brighter image but some elevated black levels
