16" Macbook Pro M1 Pro Ghosting

so the notebookcheck response time analysis validates our concern with ghosting. its pretty bad, even compared to the competition. to add, this is the first apple device i've owned where i noticed the ghosting. i'm under the impression that promotion exacerbates the ghosting issue. at least with 60hz you're stuck with a lower refresh rate masquerading the response time a bit. now with a high refresh rate, but unchanged or even worse response time, the slow response time is even more noticeable. i'm starting to get a bit used to the display, however, i can't help but come to the conclusion that apple will more than likely address the slow response time in the next mbp update.

It's an expensive device and should have a screen with a response time better than a 15 inch Macbook Pro purchased over 6 years ago. It doesn't and I won't embrace an apologist mindset for Apple. We should expect and get quality from them and speak up when we don't. The last generation screen was terrible compared to my 2015 model in relation to response time.

You're right about online reviews. Go straight to the forums once the product is released and you'll get a crystal clear picture of what the product is really like *

Everything about my 16” m1 max is quality in my opinion. People need to learn (not you personally to have normal expectations and appreciate things for what they are. Man, can you imagine who some of these complainers are married to? Y’all must have the perfect wives, perfect jobs and perfect lives to be so nit- picky on every little thing. I’ve been on this site for years and years and it’s is getting more stressful just hearing all of “first world” problems people have. Geez, it’s just a computer or a phone or something. If you look up in to real life there really are problems that need to be addressed like homelessness, economic instability, climate change, our democracy being attacked and the list goes on. A notch, 16 vs 32 gigs of ram or other things should not be the end of the world.

Amen to this - but this is macrumors, not climate change news. So what people do here is discuss macs :) Also, in a world where consumerism needs to calm down drastically, purchases have to be better informed. If you change your laptop every say 7-10 years, you want to pick the generation that has the least problems. I would say these macbooks have far less problems than the ones they replace. Still, ghosting is one of these problems that macbooks carry around since at least 2016, with the problem getting worse at each new generation - definitely not the trend you'd like to see.

I think it was much worse on the first batch of MBP 16” in 2019 lol.

My 14” is bearable but can’t use it for gaming at 40ms

The numbers might be worse, but I think it feels better. I was on page one in the 2019 16" ghosting issue thread and ended up returning it. This one I don't really have a problem with.

A comment I posted elsewhere, this is from the notebookcheck review:

"Subjectively, we can say that ghosting is not as noticeable as on Windows laptops with similarly slow response times. Maybe the ghosting is somewhat reduced by the 120 Hz refresh rate."

and

"The new display is really amazing, and it is definitely one of the best panels you can currently get."

Very interesting… one of the best panels… :)

i decided i will keep the mbp, considering that its confirmed that the response times are high. i thought i had a lemon for a second. over time i've gotten used to the high response time. additionally, OLED based MBP's won't be out for another couple years. sure, response time may improve by next year's model but i'm okay with that.

yes, there appears to be a complex feedback of refresh rate on ghosting, with positive results. I believe this is the way Apple will deal with the problem for the time being and for the near future. With micro-leds/oleds at the horizon, I don't see them trying hard to improve on a technology that is transitional and already more than good enough in any case.

It also appears that Monterey is presently not completely finished as regards ProMotion support. Give it a few months and the experience will probably feel a lot smoother.

You really wont an oled macbook. The risk for burnin is extremly high. Also asus is giving for their 5000+ Euro ProArt laptop oled display only 7000 hrs use warranty. Oled burns in when using 600-1000 hours static images at the same place. The high price is including the panel swaps. Apple will never offer a warranty above 1 year and i dont think it will include panel wear out.

I would much more prefer a new micro led or dual cell panel (but its too thick and heavy for amacbook :D) above an oled.

Micro led will not happening the next years for Apple. Because the costs are to high for their appreciated margin, so the display technology will stuck or they will really order Samsung Super Amoled displays. The customer takes all the risk :D.

There are already rumors they will really use Amoled for the next macbooks in 2022 :D. I hope the customers are not so stupid and buying them.

When i buy oled laptop i know the risk and would use it only for media consumption. I doubt most customers are aware of it. Lg display with the 32 inch uhd joled printed panel used for 32EP950 is sparing out 50 pixels each side for pixel shifting. I doubt Samsung/Apple will do it because of ultra thin bezels.

Well yeah but we looking at OLED when? 2023/2024 by the looks of it.

Honestly as long as you don't game this won't be an issue. I use this screen every day and I'm very ghosting sensitive and honestly I had a worse time in the 16" i9.

by the time Apple releases their OLED panels for their MBP/Mac Pro's the technology will improve to the point it will have a very long life cycle. i'm open to either micro-LED or OLED as long as the response times improve while maintaining color accuracy, brightness, and deep blacks
