i would never get a 13" because all the kids i know who just "want a mac" get the 13" macbook pro :p. it just seems nooby and dinky because of it's small size. i think this is a trend isolated to schools/universities so yo pros don't need to worry .

i have a 17" because i really enjoy the screen real estate and since i started university (as well as a bit of highscool) i've used a 17 inch notebook. i've said this about 900x on this forum, but you get a 17" notebook bag and you'll never see a real decrease in portability unless you're a 48 lb asthmatic with osteoporosis (this is coming from a 140lb lankasaurus of a guy).

i take my 17" notebook to class and starbucks and it's never cumbersome. it actually starts a lot of conversations because people never see them. it actually gets kind of fun when a parade of people walk by you in a starbucks all asking about your computer.

Too big, but I have to have the features.

It is still quite small compared to other 17" machines out there.

13" / Ultra-portables are in demand only by students? Not bloody likely!

Nope, you've completely missed my point, but I didn't phrase it very well so you're off the hook :p. What I meant was, that at least at my school. people who just want a mac to be non conformist (read: hipsters) get the 13" MacBook Pro. I know that a lot of people want 13 inchers for portability, but 'round these parts the 13" because for a while it was the entry level mac. I go to a liberal arts university, so hipsters are everywhere, therefore I equate 13" MBP's (specifically) to noobs :p.

We actually did a survey (I'm in computing/stats), and a statistically significant number of people who had the 13" MacBook recorded that the only reason they bought the computer they did was because they didn't want to feel left out. I kid you not. Also noteworthy: something like 60% of the people who owned a Dell said they didn't want to buy it but their parents made them, haha.

They bought the 13" and then took the money left and not spent on the 17" and purchased a 58" Panasonic Viera plasma.

1) i assumed that some were buying the 15 because it was the cheap entry level macbook pro and i thought many of them were students. i can see the 13 inch as the me too macbook
2) what do people say to you at starbucks about your mbp?

I have a sorta MBP sized laptop right now (very similar on width/depth, but a little thicker), roughly same weight too..

What can I say? I LOVE IT! There are a few random times where I use a smaller laptop (particularly a vaio z or a macbook 13") and start to want a tiny portable thing, but....

then I use it for 5+ minutes and try to do what I consider normal on this machine and go insane. :D

17" MBP or bust! A 15" is a nice, solid option too. Seriously, absolutely nothing wrong with a 15". Awesome machines they are!

I bought mine on launch day but spent ages going through the options. I wanted anti-glare and I wanted high-res. The high-res option on the 15" put it very close to the price of the 17" and that has a 1920x1200 display so I thought, why the hell not.

It's a nice display and a great laptop but I do think it's a bit big. I am wishing now I got the 15" just for portability but the 17" rarely does any work and sits aside most of the time.

While this is a worthless poll to ask a question about, I'll just say that I have the new 17" MBP and I was concerned that it would be too big for me. I've found it to be perfect for me. I love it! I bought it to replace my desktop Mac Pro that I just sold. Although I miss the 30" screen I'm planning to buy either a new 27" Cinema Display or a new 27" iMac for my main desktop sometime soon. Probably the latter though as I miss having the "server" with a large screen. The 500GB drive is just not big enough for all of my pics and iTunes data.

I think it's a little too big since the desks at school can't really support the 17 inch. I mean my 15 inch barely fits on there.

for those of us out of school i have plenty of desks, conference tables, and free space. so the notebook fitting on a desk does not matter.

I got a 17 inch as well since its release.
After months of experience: not too big
and certainly not too heavy. All those people
saying otherwise....... NOPE :p

don't lie you know you couldn't actually use the 17" without a crane for months whilst you pumped iron in the gym to get the strength and stamina to carry that behemoth around. Not saying you are/were weak, but we all know that the 17" is damn near immobile.
;)

17 is not much bigger than 15

do you think the 17 macbook pro is too big for normal computer usage (not talking about professional usage thay require the extra size like photograhers and video) is it too big for the rest of us? is the extra screen space and pixels not worth the compormise in size?

Dude, why don't you go to an Apple Store and check it out in person?

I would like a 17" MBP,it would be a nice upgrade to my 13" MB.Which seems really small at times, like at a desk like I am now,but I'm a on-the-go person and the 13" is really nice then, but I recently got a 21" HDTV so it's now my external monitor at my desk, but honestly,if I could have a desktop or 17" MBP,I would get the desktop.I would prefer to just keep the laptop as a portable and have a desktop for everything else.

I have a 17" Macbook Pro and it rarely leaves my desk at home. It isn't that hard to carry but i couldn't imagine bringing it everywhere I go it's too big.You have to realize the performance and great screen of a 17" may be good for some, but the portability of a 15" is a big difference. In the end if you want to take it with you wherever you go get a 13" or 15", but if you are going to use it as a desktop then the 17" is the way to go. Also there is a huge price difference between the 13" and 17".

17" MBP all the way. I need max resolution for photo and video editing. I have an iPad for casual browsing around the house. The MPB is attached to my computer desk and seldom gets moved. But compared to my much heavier Gateway 7805u 17" laptop, my MBP is nice and light.

FINALLY, someone else who knows the weight-lifting beast that is the 7805u! Now THAT is a desktop replacement. The MBP 17" is piddly compared to that monstrosity.

I've been debating for quite some time between the 15" and 17". Specced the way I want (i7, AG, 7200) the price difference is only about $200. Coming from a PBG4, the 15" feels more natural. However, with the benefits the 17 provides (3 USB, 1920x1200, EC34, the better sounding/more speakers, and the supposedly quieter fans), it seems well worth the price difference.

While the 17" is obviously not for everyone, it seems that the majority of people on this site view the 17" as so large it is barely portable, even though its footprint not all that much bigger than the 15". And with AG, it's only a half-pound more than an ultra-glossy 15.

My speculation is that IF the 15" (or even the 13") were the biggest notebook Apple sold, complimented by even smaller models, this, too, would be viewed by many as so large it is not portable, simply because it would be the largest and heaviest in the MBP line.

Just a thought.

ok thats good logic

how much are you using your ipad vs mac?

For sure, people are on the go more and more and I think maybe there's an increased desire to have more power on the go than a smart phone, netbook or iPad offer.

Ultraportable notebooks are in extreme high demand, always have been *but* the majority of people don't want to spend much money on them so computer manufacturers filled the gap with (high profit / low quality) netbooks.

I wish instead of netbooks companies were busy making quality 12/13" ultraportables.
