I had a 17" laptop. I'm sure the width of it is probably the same but def. not the weight.

Anyways, the portability was a pain. I hated it. I often move my laptop up and down the stairs.. Downstairs during the day. Upstairs at night.

Now that I have the 13, I love it. Light and easy to carry along with other things too.

BUT the big screen was def. a plus!!

So I'm a 15" MBP owner, and the size is really great for balance between portability and usability, however I started working with 3D and programs such as Final Cut and AE which do ask for a lot of screen real estate, and a lot of the times I feel very crowded when I work.

I've been heavily considering upgrading to 17", but I'm not sure if I can afford to lose the portability. My laptop is basically my counterpart, and it goes with me wherever I go, so I need it to be portable. Though from what I've heard, the 17-inch is hardly less portable than the 15-inch?

I feel like it wouldn't be much bigger or change the portability by any extreme measure, but I guess it's hard to say unless I actually have the laptop and am using it on a day to day. Anyone have suggestions?

I usually throw my laptop in a sleeve, then in my backpack, but I'm not even sure if the 17" will fit in there :S

I've got my 17" MBP in a sleeve and in my backpack with plenty of room to spare. I couldn't be happier with with portability of it. Now, I came back to Mac after using an Asus G73-JH 17" gaming laptop which is an absolute monster so carrying around my 17" MBP is a relief.

i could see a 17 mbp and mba. just comes down to how many devises you need

1) iphone
2) ipad
3) mbp
4) mba

seems like alot of mobile products but ipad and mba i dont think can be your only mobile solution and iphone is not a computer.

Many thanks. I think I'll aim for a 17".. the idea of more screen space is great :D

I own a 13inch MBP,and am very much happy about it,i felt that 17",was just too big for me.
Tried out at the apple store, after i got my 13" as a gift,to get a feel of the the higher end models.
The 15" is just perfect according to me,perfect mixture of power+portability.
17",first of all was just too huge(i don't have that big a table, first of all :p).
Apart from that,i felt the resolution was just a bit too high,in my opinion.
But,hey! all this is just my opinion :)

i wonder if the 17 will be the only mbp left with an optical drive

i was an owner of the 13" mb for 3 years and then it was time for an upgrade.
i was originally looking at the 15" mbp but my brothers friend won a 17" and was willing to sell it to me for $1200. i could not pass up the savings.

was I originally concerned about the size/weight? yes, but now that i own it, i dont find it too heavy or big. i love it

I think the form factor is awesome. If it's big, that's because 17" laptops just are big. Check the dimensions and you will find that the 17" MBP has about the same footprint as a 15" PC and is much thinner. People have no problem lugging 15" Dells and HPs around so the 17" MBP really isn't too bad.

I recently purchased a 17" MBP, and its something I've been needing for the past two years. The mini only did for me with the 23" Acer, but the Mini was chugging on CS5 (Photoshop kept quitting, Illustrator lagged when scrolling).

The 17" is perfect for me as far as workspace, but I'll admit its not for everyone. More-so, I like to watch videos while working, and on my 13" MacBook it was a pain trying to shrink windows and the QT window to fit them side by side, and the problem with relying on the Mini was I travel a lot, so throwing things between two machines was a hassle.

Now all of that is over, and as far a portability it hasn't been an issue. Still waiting for my case, but in a bag, it still fits in my bookbag fine (or I just carry it if I'm walking on campus).

Prepared to get gawked @ by onlookers and those inquirining about your computer that looks larger than their 13" MBP. I've gotten about two comments this week :D

I don't normally take my MacBook out anywhere that I don't need it. If anything (even with my MacBook), I've only planned to use it at college, dorm, home, and perhaps the airport or airplane depending on how bored I get over how much time I have left as I travel between NY and GA constanly (which is why having 2 Macs was a pain).

If anything, my friends just joked about their 13" looking like a dwarf around mines but other than that I haven't gotten any comments. Here, MacBook Pros are popular among students, and generally range from around 13-15", I only know 2 people with a '05 17" MBP.

The only people I hear bragging are the game designer/nerds who bought the Alienware laptops with like 14 interchangeable led colors.

I've been using my 15" MBP for about 4 years now, carting it to and from Uni every day, involving an 80 min train ride each way. Carrying it is not a problem. It weighs less than your standard textbook.

I'm considering upgrading to a 17" MBP soon, as I'm starting postgrad. I expect to still find it easy to cart to and from Uni, especially as I won't have to carry around textbooks or writing books. After all, it's better to just get digital versions of textbooks, and display them on a beautiful, large screen.

Anyway, every step you take carrying a heavy bag makes you feel like you're getting stronger. I actually feel uncomfortable when I'm walking around Uni without a heavy backpack.

Way too big in my opinion, if you really need a big screen, then maybe consider an external display? I find my 15" MBP too big at times, but I think the 15" size is still probably the best compromise between bulk and screen size.

Everybody's needs differ, though, I guess.

Anybody here used a 17" Windows laptop? They're twice as thick, and 50% heavier, the 17" is a MBA in comparison.

The 17" need to cram it's externals and resolution into a 16" laptop, and add an HDMI port, that would be the perfect laptop IMO.

17" MBP is a great choice if you plan to use it as a desktop replacement.
Also, given the high resolution 17" screen, you don't really have to buy additional monitor, but this depends on personal usage.
Anyway, I have 17" and I don't regret buying it.

I've got the 17" MBP and been using it for 9 months now. I absolutely love it!!!!

It really isn't that much different than a 15" (which I had before). It's so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up.
