Every time I open up and use the !7 inch screen, I'm relaxed, content and amazed that something so portable can be so enjoyable! My 13 inch pro got the job done, but the 17 inch screen real estate, speakers, and power make it a no compromise machine.:D

17 doesnt seem TOO big but I wish they put in a keypad in there somehow with all that extra space...

Does Apple have something against the keypad? Even the iMac doesn't have one now (unless you order it with a wired keyboard)

Idk but i wish they included it on models big enough to fit it, and the 17" certainly has the space to do so.

I have a 17" MBP because I _need_ it for work. Compared to other 17" laptops it's very thin, light, and is equipped with a brilliant display. I like mine so much I cannot imagine going without.

That said, the most important criterion when choosing any laptop is your "needs" not wants. Thus if you require a 17" laptop, it's nearly impossible to beat the MBP.

I wish I had the means to buy a 17" MBP. Financially, I can easily afford it, the problem is I have to use my MBP for work everyday in my lab, and a 35 minute commute each way means I need something as light as possible that will still allow me to get my work done and serve as my personal computer. Since I am also essentially living out of a suitcase as a consultant, I need my equipment to be as tiny and light as possible while still meeting my performance envelope, which makes the 13" 2.4GHZ MBP the best choice for me.
As soon as I get to a more stable stage in my life, I am heading to the Apple Store to pick up a 17" MacBook Pro (or actually, online so I can get an i7 chip in it).

Is the "17 MBP too big?" That's a silly question. I didn't read through all the posts and don't know if anyone has similar thoughts about this question.

The answer to the question is: Apple knows its customers and thus offers multiple sizes to cover all (most) needs. So, who cares if it's too big, just go with the next size down if it doesn't meet your needs. I have 2 17s and will get another when my latest needs replacement.

I'm just glad that Apple offers a 17 and I would be upset if they stopped offering it, but that's highly unlikely. Apple wants to keep, guys like me, happy. :)

what will happen to the next mbp 17
1) discontinued
2) lose its optical drive and hard drive/get flash
3) stay the same with upgrades to cpu, ram, etc.

I am concerned that a number of people have mentioned the weight as a major issue to not wanting the 17". It's only 2.1 pounds more than the 13" MBP (or 1 pound more than the 15")

Is that 2 pounds really a problem?

Now, the actual size I can understand, the 17" is pretty big. It doesn't fit in many "standard" laptop bags, can be impossible to use on an airplane, can take over a desk at school, etc

I vote "3) stay the same with upgrades to cpu, ram, etc." with a possible addition of Flash Storage. I think it keeps the optical even if the 13 and/or 15 lose theirs.

seems like apple is going thin and small. 17inch does not lend itself well to thin and small.

Apple has always gone "thin and small".

The 13" MBP will die before the 17 incher because there's only one of them and there will always be a niche market for a portable desktop unit.

Three 13" laptops is too many. And god only knows where the lowly whitebook fits into the next change of lineups. It may be the only thing left with a SuperDrive. :D

The 17" is not a fat mess compared to the 15" or 13" MBP, it's a .03 inch difference between the current 13" and current 17". A 17" laptop is not supposed to be very small, it's got a 17" screen on it.

My 17" MBP fits in a 15" Targus Backpack with an incase hardshell on.

And the 17" MBP Is more powerful than even the iMac in certain regards. No, not raw processing power, but the express card slot gives us limitless expandability and the opportunity to use legitimate PCIe cards with the appropriate enclosure.

I see #3 most likely to happen, though I would also expect it to align with the rest of the MBP platform which is likely going to migrate to a flash storage.

It ain't too big. Hardly.

Sometimes I feel it's a normal size laptop, and the 15'' is in fact the 13''. :p

The main problem is carrying it, but if you get a nice comfortable bag (I prefer the messenger bags, much more versatile than a backpack) the it shouldn't be a problem.

What I like the most is the resolution, 1920x1200 is soo handy, especially if you do some content creation.
I use mine mainly as a Logic Pro machine, but it's a everyday computer, also. In fact, it's my only computer, that's how good it is.

Peace

good points. i wonder what will happen to optical drive and hard drive in next 17 mbp.

I think that 17" is too big for what *most* of us want out of a notebook/laptop.

If you just want a fairly speedy substitute for a desktop that'll transport easily when you want, then go for it. :) It is certainly a lot lighter than the Dell equivalents.

Why would one even expect a laptop with a 17" display to be small? This laptop is offered with a large display for those who _need it_. Not everyone's work can be done on a tiny display.

It's already super thin compared to others in it's class. It's also very light by comparison. In retrospect the very suggestion that this model is too big, is rather absurd.

alot thinner than dell.

I know you might find it odd but I use a 16" sony as my laptop, that is, I carry it in my bag with me and use it on the sofa and stuff. Needless to say, the battery has something like 200 cycles on it already and I've only had it about 7 or 8 months lol :D

Sometimes, I do opt out of carrying it around, but usually it's not a big deal for me; I love having all the screen real estate a 1920x1080 screen has. :D

Apple can do a lot more with the 17" than what it's offering now ... considering all that extra space that's in there.

So I'm a 15" MBP owner, and the size is really great for balance between portability and usability, however I started working with 3D and programs such as Final Cut and AE which do ask for a lot of screen real estate, and a lot of the times I feel very crowded when I work.

I've been heavily considering upgrading to 17", but I'm not sure if I can afford to lose the portability. My laptop is basically my counterpart, and it goes with me wherever I go, so I need it to be portable. Though from what I've heard, the 17-inch is hardly less portable than the 15-inch?

I feel like it wouldn't be much bigger or change the portability by any extreme measure, but I guess it's hard to say unless I actually have the laptop and am using it on a day to day. Anyone have suggestions?

I usually throw my laptop in a sleeve, then in my backpack, but I'm not even sure if the 17" will fit in there :S

Also I found this good comparison pic:
