Note the caption...the image is from the Canadian store, where it does start at $2999. The US and several other stores do not have 17" MBP ads on their front pages. Instead they have an iPod gift-wrapping ad for Valentine's Day. :)
Ah, right.

I don't know why, but when reading fast I tend to skip over italics for some reason.

Great, thanks Apple, for a new $3000 laptop in today's economy...

Do the right thing, buy the laptop, do the right thing.

Noones holding a gun to your head forcing you to buy it lol.

Not every country in the world is suffering. Apple has customers worldwide.

Mines been on order for weeks...shipping in two weeks. I want it NOW! :p

Very nice. Can't wait to test it out at my local Apple store.

Wait, doesn't the new 17" start from $2,799?
Being that the battery is the main new feature, testing it at the apple store is kinda pointless. You buy it and the batteries don't work as well as advertised then you have an expensive lemon. Unless you are forced to get Apple Care which I don't know if it covers the battery. Being a battery is expected to fail after the warrantee.

I am sorry this is to much form at a risk of function. Consumables should be user replaceable. Period.

If you have a screwdriver and a few minutes you can replace it. Just because they don't make it easy with latches doesn't mean it can't be replaced.

I'm personally happy they did this, it makes sense to me. I've never replaced a battery in my laptops so why add all that extra stuff to replace them when you can use that space to more important things.

"Now shipping" in ... Canada

Sorry MacRumors to burst your bubble, but the picture is found on the Canada's Apple site. The U.S. site has no such picture and it still shows that the 17-inch MBP is shipping within 7-10 business days.

I ordered mine on January 6, 2009 with the 2.93 GHz chip and it is supposed to ship February 4, 2009. Time will tell, or should I say, the credit card charge will if Apple fulfills this shipment date.

The battery life of this laptop makes it the first serious portable laptop I have seen from Apple. Having 4 or 5 hours makes a laptop something of a tinkertoy, because you will have to plug it in through the day--it's just a light version of an iMac with a little time away from an outlet. So what if the battery takes a few minutes to remove and replace? This is a good step forward.

That being said, I wish they would work on updating their other hardware. Design is excellent on most of the Apple table top hardware, but the processors are old.

I think it's weird how here at Macrumors, Apple always "quietly" updates their pages. What, are they supposed to have a loud fanfare sound, banners wave, and a new front page up whenever they make an already-announced product available?

Agreed!

I can't wait for the demo models to reach the Apple stores so that I can try them out in person. Hopefully they will also ship matte screen demo models. :)

In the past, Apple has sometimes changed the main front page banner to indicate that a previously announced product is now shipping, and/or issued a press release. Saying that they "quietly" updated their pages means they didn't make a big deal out of a recent change.

I agree. I bet if Apple made printers again, they'd be one solid piece of aluminum/plastic (whatever the outer shell is) and then charge like $250 for ink replacement. Plus, can you imagine lugging around a laser printer?

Apple products are WAY too expensive. I remember reading in an older thread that Steve Jobs wants nothing less than something like a 28% margin on all products. I don't mind companies making a little profit, but 28 freaking % ?!?!? If I were him, I'd go with a 5-10% profit margin. That way, Apple can have a little extra money for growth, plus they'd get a few more sales since it won't be so expensive. WHat they lose on margin, they'd probably make up for in volume. Which then means higher market share.

I don't blame Apple one bit. Why cut into your margin when you don't have to? They are producing record sales whilst the rest of the PC/laptop sales erode margins to the point of disappearing.

Stack 'em high sell 'em cheap works for Ford's. Not Apple computers.

Hopefully, once Apple realizes that every single 17" they sell is with the matte screen, they'll offer it as an option on the 15" too. Buttheads...

Wow! Apple products are SO overpriced! $3,000 bucks for a laptop! Wow. That's so not acceptable.

The problem, I suspect, is that 90% of people will choose the glossy screens. I currently own a previous-gen glossy screen. When I compared the matte and glossy screens side by side, the glossy screen was much easier on my eyes. It was easier to read text in particular because the edges seemed sharper or something. The reflections can be annoying at times, but the annoyance is primarily choosing an appropriate spot to work.

I'm not sure how I feel about the super-glossy new screens, though. My wife has one, and it looks great, but you have to be much more careful about where you choose to sit.

I don't know anyone who has got "matte" so I think it's probably going to be 90/10 in the glossy to matte department. If that.

If you order now you should get it by March..that's how popular these are.

Apple seriously has to get their prices down. I've never complained about them before, and for the most part I'm OK with them, but seriously, releasing an updated product with a $200 price increase is ridiculous. Maybe it's worth it, but they're going to find it harder and harder to compete if they don't shave the prices a bit. I'm not talking about a $500 MacBook, or $1200 MacBook Pro. I mean maybe ~$799, and $1799 respectively. I'd like to see the 17" back where it used to be at $2499 (PowerBook).

I just remember that conference call a few months back talking about being able to be really aggressive with pricing, but I don't think we've seen any of it yet besides the iPhone price.
