Even though I am not super wealthy I have no problem paying $3k once every 1-2 years for a 17" MBP. I spend everyday all day on this machine and hence it is easily worth the price for me. I much rather save on dining out or going to movie theaters than spend all day on a mid-level laptop with a small screen. It just depends on what is important in your everyday life. A high quality portable makes my everyday life a lot better, so I am not complaining about the fact that a premium computer comes at a premium price point. Complaining about this would be like complaining that a Ferrari or Prada suit are expensive.

Why are people who are obviously not potential MacBok Pro customers complaining in this forum? The current MacBook is a fantastic offering for you, no complaining necessary! There are obviously still enough people who are happy to buy MacBook Pros in this economy, without complaining. If you are not one of them there are plenty of lower priced options for you. I am excited about the new 17" MBP and am just waiting for both the matte and the glossy to be in stores so I can compare the screens side by side before making my decision. I would even prefer if there was a 3GHz+ processor available at an additional premium -- I would order it.

You should hang on to your one-of-a-kind collectable! The first generation MBP only shipped in 1.83, 2.0, and 2.16GHz models. It was later speed bumped up to 2.33. It wasn't until the second generation with LED backlighting that a 2.4GHz MBP became available.

I'd venture to say that the C2D's (the 2.33) were a generation of their own. Heck they even added FW800 to the C2D's. I'd say the 2.4 LED was a third generation MBP.

Reality check

I paid roughly $3k for a 15" TI Powerbook in 2000
I paid roughly $3k for a 17" AL PowerBook in 2004
And a new 2009 Unibody 17" is roughly $3K

In adjusted dollars that is $3,700, and $3,373 respectively. You get much more Apple computer for less, and it will now run Windows at native speeds. If you do not need a MacOS in 17" then by any of the equivalent or better spec'd machines from the Windows camp.

All this bitchin' about $3K for a professional tool that has continued to improve markedly while holding steady at US$2799 for nearly a decade ignores reality. This is neither more expensive or out of touch with the current economy.

I am confused by Apple taking away the option to swap out the hard drive. The battery I understand but they didn't explain the hard drive. It is such a pain to upgrade the hard drive on the Powerbook and older Macbook Pros.

Hopefully it won't have any screen issues or heat problems.

Apple seriously has to get their prices down. I've never complained about them before, and for the most part I'm OK with them, but seriously, releasing an updated product with a $200 price increase is ridiculous. Maybe it's worth it, but they're going to find it harder and harder to compete if they don't shave the prices a bit. I'm not talking about a $500 MacBook, or $1200 MacBook Pro. I mean maybe ~$799, and $1799 respectively. I'd like to see the 17" back where it used to be at $2499 (PowerBook).

I just remember that conference call a few months back talking about being able to be really aggressive with pricing, but I don't think we've seen any of it yet besides the iPhone price.

The picture is of the Canadian Apple site! Not the US! In the US it's $2799. In Canada, it's $2999. Goddamn people, READ THE ARTICLE BEFORE YOU WHINGE ABOUT THE PRICE!!!

Heck, in Australia it's going to cost us an arm and a leg and the other leg for one of these things!!!

Why are you guys complaining about 28% profit? Have you thought about how much a cappucino costs in the making? Why don't you complain about the profit Starbucks makes? 500%? 900%?
If it's too expensive, don't buy it! Not everyone HAS to have an 17" MBP! It's not like you can't breath on earth without one...

I agree. I bet if Apple made printers again, they'd be one solid piece of aluminum/plastic (whatever the outer shell is) and then charge like $250 for ink replacement. Plus, can you imagine lugging around a laser printer?

Apple products are WAY too expensive. I remember reading in an older thread that Steve Jobs wants nothing less than something like a 28% margin on all products. I don't mind companies making a little profit, but 28 freaking % ?!?!? If I were him, I'd go with a 5-10% profit margin. That way, Apple can have a little extra money for growth, plus they'd get a few more sales since it won't be so expensive. WHat they lose on margin, they'd probably make up for in volume. Which then means higher market share.

The goal of a business is to make money. Apple is making plenty of money with whatever their profit margin is on various products. I prefer quality over quantity, just as many other Apple customers do. Microsoft went the volume way and even though they have a huge market share, Apple continues to make much better quality products, in my opinion.

Very nice. Can't wait to test it out at my local Apple store.

Wait, doesn't the new 17" start from $2,799?

I cant wait to test it out either and also test out the new MacBook.

I haven't been to an Apple Store in more than 3 months so theres a lot of new stuff I haven't seen yet.

Hopefully, once Apple realizes that every single 17" they sell is with the matte screen, they'll offer it as an option on the 15" too. Buttheads...

I hope you are right, but I'm not so sure anymore. We ordered the new 17" MBPs at work, but I was the only one of four developers who wanted the matte screen. The other 3 developers preferred the glossy display.

For home, I bought a previous-generation 15" MBP when the new 15" MBP came out almost entirely because there was no matte option. But maybe those of us that prefer matte option aren't such a majority.

Everybody has a right to be stupid, a lot of you are abusing this privilege.

Firstly, Apple just announced their best quarter ever, sure sign they need to start cutting prices huh?

Secondly, Apple do actually sell notebooks that cost less than $2799, in fact starting at $999. Guess what, Dell, HP, Sony, all sell notebooks that cost $2799+, as well as cheaper models. People pay different amounts for what they need a product to do and what they can afford.

Thirdly, when you can find me a 17" notebook with an 8 hour battery at that size and weight for less money, then I will believe it is overpriced.

Margin and markup are 2 different things, a 25% mark up is only a 20% margin.

Margin is your gross profit

For a 10% profit that would be less than 15% markup

If they are shipping now then by Tuesday they will have them in stock.

Further Apple, has nearly $20 billion in cash reserves and is debt free. I think the team at Apple is doing just fine without most of the sage marketing and business advice I read in this forum.

I was waiting for someone to bring that point up. That money is just sitting there, like in a huge mound of $20s I bet. Steve problem sits atop of it and wipes his backside with the non-crispy ones. Sitting there cutting & pasting his mms messages on his iPhone 2,1 or whatever-the-hell the next version is. Yeah, that's what I choose to believe, and go Steve go! If he can charge so much for stuff, by all means, charge away. Charge until that mound is 30 billion high. God bless you Steve!!! I, as you, also like money and cool products.

I'll still buy a new iMac every 3 years and a new iPhone every 16 months or so because I enjoy using these products. I don't enjoy them $2,800 for a laptop that I don't need, but I enjoy them $1,500 for a desktop every three years. I can't believe people complain about a $2,800 laptop when they offer one for 1K.

Apple has quietly updated their pages for the new 17" unibody MacBook Pro to reflect a change from accepting pre-orders to offering shipment in 7-10 business days for new orders. In addition, several international Apple online stores have added a "Now Shipping" badge to the 17" MacBook Pro ad on their front pages.

The new 17" MacBook Pro was announced at Macworld San Francisco with availability planned for "late January". The updated machine adopts many of the design changes introduced in the 15" MacBook Pro and 13" MacBook in October 2008, but notably features a non-user-replaceable battery designed to provide 8-hour battery life and to retain up to 80% of its original capacity for up to 1000 charge cycles.

Users are encouraged to visit our MacBook Pro forum for the latest updates from users awaiting delivery of the new machines.

I know the battery is non replaceable but can you remove the harddrive the way you can with the 15 inch models?

Still 2-3 weeks for Anti-Glare screen

FYI, I ordered mine the day after launch and I am still showing a ship-date of Feb 20 - 25.

I just went back as though to configure another 17" to ship and all the options show "Ships 7-10" days, EXCEPT, if you want the Anti-Glare screen.

My original order includes the Anti-Glare screen, so that explains why mine still won't ship for 2-3 more weeks.

I wonder if the reason the Angi-Glare model is so delayed is because a large percentage of orders requested it, or if in general Apple has fewer of the parts available in their queue.

It might be an interesting poll question w.r.t. how many people ordered Anti-Glare vs. not.
MacRumor's are you reading this? :)

+1. I'm exactly in the same category, and the amount of time I'm on my machine makes it personally more worthwhile to spend more, and the price difference parsed over 2-3 years for even an extra $1000 isn't really a ton of money.

As a side note, I wouldn't exactly sob if they cut the price on a personal level :).

Yep - how about a price cut across the board???

Well, how is it carrying around a 17" MacBook anyways? I know people that purchased 17" Windows Laptops (that would be $900 17" laptops ;)) and they all returned them for 15" ones...
