Macbook Air

...

I dont think this is going to happen, because everyone knows its the Air's weakness not having an interchangable battery so it will become the Pro's weakness too, also Apple like to keep their product ranges similar, so if the 17" is getting an internal battery, i would think the 15" would be too.

No, not everyone..... my wife has an Air, and uses it exclusively when traveling. Not once has she ever thought - "Gee, wish I had an interchangeable battery." When its time to get a new battery, we'll take it to a store (Apple or authorized) and have them change it.

I have a 15" MBP. Except for the first day, when I was checking it out, I haven't ever taken the battery out.

I do, however, constantly locate and sit near power plugs at airports and on ferries in order to plug in. To have notebook that would last for 6 or 8 hours would be wonderful. I don't want to carry a 2nd battery, I like to travel light. So, if true, I say bring it on!

Shame on YOU dude. Apple hasn't even confirmed this and already you are being senselessly accusatory. :p

Sounds likes something Apple would do. If its a rumor, ok good. If not, bummer.

I can envision a variation on this rumor to be true: CTO options.

Standard 17" MBP comes as they usually do:
- Optical drive
- 1 HDD
- Removeable battery

CTO MBP can remove the optical drive in lieu of an additional internal battery or a second hard drive. With a second battery installed, you'd double your life AND enable live hot-swapping of the easily-accessible battery.

These seems to be the most reasonable possibility if the "non-removable" rumor is true...

Shark jump in 3...2...oh wait, it's already happened.

The refurb store sure is looking good.

Seriously, this rumor can't be serious.

If they lower the 2.0 Alum macbook, i will be heading back to best buy for a price adjustment! Just got my new one last week so if they are gonna do it, they better announce it at macworld this week!

I too would be highly disappointed at the lack of a removable battery. As someone said earlier, if they made the battery last 10 hours, then it would lessen the pain. However, it's doubtful they will.
If it's true they might get rid of matte, I'm going to be very unhappy. I hate glossy. It's ugly and I don't want to be forced to buy a Mac with it.

My $0.02

Could it be?

A recently published patent application discovered by MacRumors reveals that Apple is investigating the use of solar power in versions of their mobile devices -- both handheld devices and portable computers. Integrating solar power into a mobile device holds the enormous potential of extending battery life significantly. However, successfully integrating solar panels into these small devices is not without its challenges.

The major issues described are the limited area available to solar panels, durability, and the "wasting" of space on a portable device. It is due to these problems that solar power has not found its way into mobile devices, not just from Apple, but from all manufacturers.

The most interesting technique described by Apple, however, is the integration of the solar panels behind the actual LCD screen of a portable device. The solar panel would absorb ambient light that passes through the LCD screen of the device. This could eliminate any additional footprint typically required by the solar panels. If successfully implemented, Apple's iPhone, iPod and laptops, could require no outward changes in design to add solar power.

Apple's not the only one exploring this technology as an old (2001) Motorola patent describes the same technique. While several limitations to the technique were described at that time, the issues may have been better addressed in recent years.

My theory?

So while I'm hoping this is false, this is what I'm hoping for if it ends up being true: Extra batteries in an enclosure with a short MagSafe connector to allow an external battery to either recharge the internal or power the laptop fully when not near an outlet.

However, I had a similar idea with the unibody MacBooks. I was hoping that there wouldn't be a Ethernet port (Say Wha?!) in lieu of a single Firewire 800 port with a FW 800->RJ45 adapter. Networking can already be done via Firewire, so there's gotta be some support for a FW pin adapter.

Let's see some of that unique and ingenious Apple engineering with the 17", but not that recent stupid Apple thinking.

Second Battery

The way it sounded to me is that it is an unremovable second battery and it still has a removable first battery

I don't quite get what's so bad about that. But I never change my battery. So I would much prefer longer battery life vs removable battery.

I call bull on this. This is a Macbook PRO, no way they'll have a non replaceable battery. Unless this sucker can get me through a whole 10 hour day without recharging (and I'm talking about wifi and BT turned on) it'll be the dumbest move apple has done to date. And they've done plenty of them lately.

Perhaps the future 17" MBP will have 2 batteries...one that is removable and one that is sealed in that only turns on when the removable one dies.

If they waited a little longer for releasing a unibody MacBook Pro, I think it's because there's something new and unique for it.

Also, Steve Jobs said in the October event that Apple will be selling the 13.3" plastic MacBooks for a long time. I don't think they will remove it.

What I think will be at MacWorld '09:
-iPhone nano
-All those iWork and iLife apps transitions to web apps (I don't remember which exactly)
-A more affordable consumer notebook
-Unibody MacBook Pro 17"

I'm not sure about the more affordable notebook but I hope there will be one as I can't wait to get my first Apple computer.

Man that is a terrible idea! why on earth would they want to do that?

maybe removing the casing around a battery would reduce the over all size. also, without a case, you can shape the battery almost perfectly within the case giving room for more goodies like 2nd hard drives, and stuff. it gives them much more internal flexibility

That is a brilliant idea. So much space wasted in the Macbook pro 15 inches!

I doubt "professtional" will bring two battery out and have them swapped round. If you are going to do something intensive, you will bring adaptor anyway. As for my unibody 15, i can hardly get more then 2hours from it from battery.

If it can be replaced just as easy as the mac air. then.. why not?

Good that i have returned my defective 15

i would add
- mac mini update
- imac nvidia chipset update.
- possibly smaller ipod shuffle

I hate to say this but even I never remove the battery from my MacBook. If they include the installation with the purchase of a new battery I don't see it as much of a problem.

Not that the MacBook Air's battery is that hard to replace.
